Here's wishinq the team well this evening in Boise, j LEA MOTORS i STH & BARTLETT 12th & Riverside I I Medford High football fans, except for a small venturesome delegation, will be radio-side spectators this evening. For the Black Tornado is far away for interstate competition. White the local gridiron lies in darkness, the Tornadoes will engage Boise in the capital of the state of Idaho. Kickoff is planned for 8 p.m. Oregon's defending champion takes on a reported rising grid iron force of the Potato state. The Whirlwind is making its first football venture into Idaho. It is the first Medford grid game with an Idaho aggregation since Nampa came here in 19-18. Coach Fred Spiegelberg's Tor nado charges will match their multiple offense against the T formation with variation of Coach Ed Knecht's Boise charges. For Medford, Boise is something of an unknown quan tity and quality because scout ing notes are scant. MILS Attack The Tornadoes will use the rushing of Bill Enyart, Tim Murray, Lance Casebeer, Greg Gandee, Ron Edmonds, Jim Cox, Larry Vowell and Mike Barnes with marshalling and passing by Barnes and Rich Knight. Boise's attack is geared by a quarterback whose actions could belie his name Paul Gentle. Other top backs are Verne Morse, Robbie Shellworth and Steve Mooney. Morse was a reg ular halfback last year. Shell worth is the only lettcrman among the starling backs. Medford will put a squad on the field with more than 20 wearers of the 'M'. There are 14 Boise lcttermcn, nine of whom are on the starting of fensive team and three of whom play on the defensive unit. Coach Knecht said this week that he employs completely separate offensive and defen sive platoons. For Medford some four or five youths may go both ways. Jalopy Men Test Skills On Sunday Fans of Jalopy auto racing will get an indication Sunday afternoon of how local cars and drivers will fare when put on the track with one of the top jalopy drivers of the West. Jack Keck, top competition driver from jalopy racing in Reno, Nov., will compete on the oval at White City along with some 50 local drivers m nine event action. Keck, along with team members Warren Welsh and Bill Butler, will bring the first car from outside the Rogue valley to race on the speedway this summer. Welsh and Butler are well known among fans of drag rac ing in this area for their per formances with their "Shoe horn" dragster some years back. To Help Keck Drag-racers sometimes turn to other types of automotive i competition and this has been the case with the Reno pair, j Not having enough money dur- ing the past summer to finance their dragster operation they turned to driving jalopies in j Reno and other Nevada tracks, i Both are among the top drivers at the Nevada oval, and though they are not bringing their own cars to Medford, are expected to help Keck with driving chores Sunday. This will be a homecoming appearance for Keck, since he is a former valley resident and started his racing career on the old Ashland speedway. Heading up the local drivers this Sunday will be such entries i as Jim Walker, Talent; Pat Ty-1 ler, Medford; Charles Davis, Ashland; Harvey Nelson, Eagle; Point; and Sam Dykes. Med-i ford. These are the top five ! point drivers at the track and are expected to lend keen com petition for all comers. Other drivers among the top ten at the Speedway oval include Bill Chase, Central Point; Dave Mc Cullom, Medford; John Jones, Ashland; John Bush, Eagle Point, and Dick Henry, Talent. Destruction Hate Another destruction derby is planned for the final event Sunday. Some 12 or more stock cars will vie in a massive free-for-all. Charles Davis, Ashland Fire Chief, won the last de struction race. Women drivers will bang fen ders in a powder puff event. Defender is Mrs. Johnny Jones, Ashland. Time (rials are slated to be gin at 12:30 p.m. with first races at 2 p.m. Sunday's pro-, gram should conclude by 4:30 track officials stated. Conces sions are available at the track. Archery Hunting Should Be Good PORTLAND (UPD-Hunting prospects for the week end, compiled by the Oregon state game commission. KOLI.EY VICTOR BOISE (UPI)-Big John Ti ger Collins pondered the wreck age of his bid for national heavyweight standing today after falling before the skilled fists last night of veteran Zora Folley. Folley, a 71-fight cam paigner who ranke among the world's best 10 heavyweights, flattened the Boise fighter in the fifth round of a rain-socked main event at the Fairgrounds. The Chandler, Ariz., fighter weighed 210, Collins 230. Rogue River Anticipates Better Grid Test Tonight B 3 ROGUE RIVER - "The ball game Friday night will be a bet ter test of what we've got," said Wayne Misener, Rogue River football coach. "It'll probably be a real rough ball game." The Rogue River Chieftains contend at 8 o'clock this evening against Illinois Valley at Cave Junction. Both clubs are members of the Rogue league but this game will be kings-x. A league game is billed at Rogue River later in the season. Kogue River beat Glendale 33 to 13 last Friday while IV fell to Gold Beach 21 to 6. "We've had some pretty good workouts," reported Misener. Pass defense has had stress, as it has had in earlier workouts. This phase of the game has been a Chieftain weakness in recent seasons. "I think it's im proving," said the RR mentor, "but it has to be tested." A good lest is anticipated this evening. IV's Darryl Gellert is a terrific passer. Good Attitude Defense against rollouts also has had attention, as have had measures against the running of Ron Thomhill and John Baum gardner. The two gave the Chief tains trouble in 1962. A couple of new plays have been added. Misener has been heartened by a "real good" team attitude and lack of injuries. Back Arden Lilcs, who has been hobbled by a bad knee, will be available for more extensive duty. His knee is responding to treatment well; Wayne Cook has been sick this week. Therefore, Dave Strick land likely will start at a tackle. TAKES PIN HONORS PORTLAND (UPI)-National doubles champion Jack Biondo lillo rolled a 701 series Thurs day night for professional hon ors in a pro-am tournament preceding the City of Roses Open bowling tournament which began here today. Biondolillo rolled games of 254 , 234 and 213 to collect the $1,000 first priza with the help of amateur part ner M. E. Delzell of Grants Pass. Delzell has a 573 series and 147 handicap. ALLEN CHOSEN SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) Junior quarterback Ernest (Pok ey) Allen today was named the starter for University of Utah in Saturday night's opener with Oregon State. Allen will start in place of senior Gary Hartz feldt, who is fully recovered from an eye operation. However, Coach Ray Nagel said Herts fcldt, a talented passer, would play.
