Radio Operator for Birmingham Police Kept Busy by Strife By Al Kuettner I known as "Dynamite Hill." Li-i correspondent One of the busiest jobs in Birmingham, Ala., these days ODirminRnam, Aia., mese days and nights is that occupied by the radio operator at police headquarters. The operator's monotone voice drones away, almost mechani cally reporting shootings, rock throwing, suspicious cars con taining firearms, congregations, demonstrations and occasional ly a fresh bombing. A stranger in town might think that the entire city of Birmingham was a jungle, un safe for human habitation. Oddly enough, there are thou sands of persons Negro and white living in the coal and iron city who never come in con tact with the racial strife and lawlessness that are the city's big problems. Many actually know little of what's going on because they have decided to ignore the developments. This attitude persists although there are some areas of Birm ingham that are highly unsafe after dark. Cars have their win dows smashed, rocks are hurled at pedestrians and gunfire is not uncommon. Trouble Zone The main trouble zone of the city starts at about 16(h st. on the south end of town and spreads south and west for many blocks. This is an area most heavily populated by Ne groes. It is a section that also has the homes of many white families in the blue collar group of industrial workers. Negroes also live in practical ly all the other sections of Bir mingham proper but in pockets rather than large concentra tions. In such a "pocket" lives the family of James Armstrong, a Negro barber, whose t w o children have been admitted to t h e Graymont Elementary School. Armstrong complained h i s youngsters formerly had to go 2 1 blocks to a Negro school, uhercas Graymont is only two blacks away from their home. ! Another of the desegregated ! schools. West End, is in the I midst of a mixed neighborhood. iVot far to the southwest lies Bessemer, the location of a big U.S. Steel Co. mill. On the Bes semer Highway the National States Rights party, a militant segregationist group, has its headquarters and holds rallies al a racetrack nearby. Closer to downtown Birming ham are the homes of many middle and upper economic class Negroes. It is in this area that Arthur Shores, a Negro at torney aclive in the desegrega tion struggle, lives. His house his been hit several times by bombs and the high ground on which he lives has come to be if tJ.ill' t 1 11 it J , i- Li it irr n m .'r"i Monday Tueidty Wdneidy Thurjdjy Ffidiy KMED-TV u i i v i i r - i i j fi a w m m m am m mm m m a b a The finest residences of the ! Birmingham's white populace are in the suburbs, mostly over ttea Mountain from the citv it sen.
