The King Ordered Tobacco West's 'Dishes of Western World' Traces History of Chili Con Carne Bv DICK WEST WASHINGTON (UPI) - So now we come, ready or not, to the end of another summer. Per- s o n a 1 1 y, I'm ready. 0 n e of the factors in fluencing m y attitude is the crime rate. The crime rate, as you know, or dinarily rises during hot wea ther, and one of the leading cnmcs is congealed salad. If my calendar is accurate, it will he almost nine months be fore I have to eat another con cealed salad. Which alone is cause, for rejoicing. Off hand, I can t think of a more appropriate way to greet the autumn, and the return of uncongcaled table fare, than by renewing mv lectures on "Great Dishes of the Western World." For openers, I have selected a dish that is commonly identi fied with cool weather dining. It s name is chili con carne. The origin of this delectable repast dales hack to the Span ish exploration of what is now the Republic of Mexico. One (lav (lie King of Spain called his explorers into his office and ordered them to discover some tobacco. . HDD NiMiliS fnnce ijouvanna Fhouma of Laos has the tradi tional string of good wishes tied on his wrist at Moung May, Atlnpeu, Laos by an elder of the community as part of the Baci ceremony thanking Buddha for a safe journey. Phouma was on a visit to the southernmost province for the first time since the signing of the Geneva Agreement. Behind the Prince is his Son-clary of State for Youth and Sports, Bouthong Voravong. (UPI) Russia May Stop Peking Train Runs MOSCOW (UPD-Speculation developed here today that the Kremlin may stop direct train service from Peking to Mos cow as a result of a new Com munist Chinese attempt to smuggle anti-Soviet literature into the country. The affected through service would involve mixed Soviet and Chinese trains with mixed crews. The Kremlin issued a protest note two days ago accusing the Chinese of attempting to bring banned literature into the So viet Union on a train bound (rom Peking to Moscow. Several Chinese were expell ed following brawls Saturday and Sunday with border officials .il Naushki, a Mongolian cross ing point. The official government news paper Izveslia said Tuesday the nffpnding Chinese acted like "rattle." $500 DOWN For 2BR modern home on Urge tor mile from Provolt. "It's that weed that the Eng lish explorers found in North Carolina," the King explained. "The Indians grow it. You hold it in your mouth and it burns." The explores wandered all over Mexico looking for tobacco, but unfortunatelv the Indians in that part of the new world did ! not smoke. Eventually, they stumbled upon a plant which was loaded with cigar-shaped pods. "Maybe this is tobacco," said one of the explorers, sticking a pod in his mouth. It burned like crazy, ing the explorers to be... .e that they had hit the jackpot. They took a whole boatload of (he stuff back to Spain. Need less to say, (he king was dis appointed. What the explorers actually had discovered was a new tvpe of pepper plant known to the Indians as "chilly." They called it that because they couldn't eat it without something "chilly" to drink. The first person to serve it for dinner was an Indian named Barney. His friends would say "Let's go over and have some chillv with Barney." (UPI) -Greyhound bus driver Madrid Reid peered through a blinding rainstorm Tuesday night and saw an automobile ahead of him in trouble. He veered his bus to miss the car. The 43 passenger scenic - cruiser over turned and 27 persons were injured. None of the injured was in serious condition today. Richard Fisher of Jefferson, Ohio, driver of the car, said a bolt of lightning startled him and a gust of wind blew him to the left side of the road.
