Patrolman Joins City Department A new patrolman and a clerk stenographer have been added to the Medford police depart ment, according to Capt. Clyde C. Fichtner. Robert Hall Stedman, 25, of 1036 Ml. Pitt ave., joined the department Sept. 8. He was as siRned to the first platoon and will be on duty from midnight to R a.m. He is a high school graduate and has served in the U. S. Army. Captain Kichtner said the ad dition of Stedman raises the department's ' patrolman com plement to 24. which is one man short of full capacity. Fire crews called to the scene of the fire at 2:34 p.m. Monday extinguished the blaze at a loca tion a short distance east of j TouVelle State park and return- j ed to the station early yesterday morning. Other crews from the fire de partment were kept busy Mon day afternoon with a series of fires. At 3:36 p.m. firemen extin guished a blaze between the Fir Ply and Red Blanket lumber mill loading docks. The fire con sumed a pile of railroad ties and grass. Cause of the blaze was unknown, firemen said. Fire, reported to have been started from sparks from the Medford disposal plant, carried by high winds, consumed about 110 acres of dry grass near the plant, firemen said. Two fires were reported at 3:46 p.m. One occurred at the Oregon Veneer plant and the other on Blackwcll Hill rd. Both were small grass fires. A grass and sawdust fire was reported to White City firemen about 3:50 p.m. on Division ave. Anderson Plywood Strike Settled ANDERSON, Calif. (UPI) -The U.S. Plywood Corp. plant here was scheduled to reopen j today, ending a 14-week strike. Negotiators for the plant and shut down after an industry I wide agreement on major issues was reached in Portland, Ore., early in August. Some 650 workers here were involved.
