(UPI) Wood, South Africa, in the National Tennis Alouettes Claim Sandy Stephens Toronto (UPI) The Tor onto Argonauts gave quarter back Sandy Stephens a new lease on his football life Tues day by claiming the suspended ex-Minnesota quarterback from the Montreal Alouettes for the $350 waiver price. Stephens, who led the Gophers to the Rose Bowl in 1961 with his fine pay and was the New York Titans' first draft choice, was suspended last week by the Alouettes for being overweight and causing dissension among his teammates. Argonaut coach Nobby Wirl owski said of Stephens, "I can't afford not to look at him. He's a good football player." Fleck, Sifford Enter Tourney Portland (UPI) Jack Fleck, Charlie Sifford and Frank Boynton today filed their entries to play in the fifth annual Port land Open golf tournament. Idaho (UPI) Lewiston will be out to take a 2-0 lead in the Northwest league playoff tonight after defeating Yakima 7-6 in 10 innings in the opening game of the best-of-five series Tuesday. Lewiston won Tuesday's game when catcher Gordy Mackenzie hit a home run on the first pitch to him in the bottom of the 10th inning. Earlier Lewiston jumped into a 6-0 lead with a six-run out burst highlighted by Bryan Dye's bases-loaded homer, only to see Yakima tie the score in the eighth at 6-6. After tonight's game, the two teams move to Yakima for the concluding contests. WAIVERS ASKED Canton. Ohio (UPI) The Pittsburgh Steelers of the Na tional Football League Tuesday asked waivers on defensive half back Len Burnett from Oregon and tackle Roger Berg from St. Thomas College. Wayne Thornton To Face Jose Menno New York (UPI) Light heavyweight contender Wayne Thorton of Stockton, Calif., meets Jose Menno of Argentina in a nationally televised return fight Saturday night at San Francisco's Kezar stadium. Another interesting bout on Labor Day week's light schedule is Friday's 15-round fight at Milan, Italy, in which Ralph Dupas of New Orleans makes his second defense of the world junior middleweight (154-pound) title. Italy's Sandro Mazzinghi is the challenger. Cal Bears Conduct First Pass Workout Berkeley, Calif. (UPI) The University of California Bears held their first passing workout of the practice season Tuesday, and coach Marv Levy expressed satisfaction with the results. He said all four of the quar terbacks threw the ball very well for this stage in the prac tice season, and he singled out first stringer Craig Morton for special praise. Ralston, seeded third in the men's division of the national singles tennis championship, had to fight for his life in a five - set duel with unseeded Owen Davidson of Australia at dusk Tuesday. Southpaw David- Junior Coffey Lost To Huskies Seattle - (UPI) Fullback Junior Coffey, Ail-American can didate at the Univer s i t y of Washington, probably will be lost to the Huskies for the 1963 season, team physician Dr. John Geehan said Tuesday. X-rays taken Tuesday after noon revealed a break in the hulking fullback's right foot was in the same area as the fracture which sidelined him during spring practice. The second break occurred in practice Monday afternoon. "Junior will be in some type of a cast for at least six weeks, the period needed for healing. It would take at least another two to three weeks for him to get in shape, so it is doubtful that he will be available to the Huskies this fall," Geehan said. He said the second break is "very much of a coincidence as Junior's foot was completely healed." ARRIVE FOR TOURNEY Spokane (UPI) The first of the professional women golfers arrived here Tuesday for the fourth Spokane Women's Open Golf Tournament Friday, Satur day and Sunday. Eugene Scott On Davis Squad Forest Hills, N. Y. - (UPI) -The United States Davis Cup tennis committee, apparently convinced that Eugene Scott "belongs," named him today on the squad that will compete on the American Zone final against Venezuela at Denver Sept. 13-15. Scott was named to the four- man squad along with Dennis Kalston ot uaKerstieid, uin., who was a standout in the U. S. victory over Mexico at Los An geles two weeks ago; Martin Ricsscn of Evanston. 111., and Arthur Ashe Jr. of Richmond, Va. Irked because he was left off the squad which faced Mexico, Scott, a 25-year-old from St. James, N. Y., acidly comment ed "Well, I hope this sill con vince them" after winning the Nassau Bowl Invitational title Aug. 12. NY Jets Release As AFL Clubs Cut to 33 Limit By United Press International American Football league players who survived the latest roster cuts were able to breathe easier today, but "borderline" members of National league teams faced another week of waiting for the ax to fall. The AFL clubs made their fi nal cuts Tuesday, reducing their rosters to the 33-man limit for the start of the 1963 season next week end. In the NFL, all teams were Jockey Files For Annulment Seattle - (UPI) - Gerald Hunt, leading jockey at Long acres Race track and third in wins in the United States, Tues day filed suit in Superior Court here for an annulment of his 10 day old marriage to the former Shirley Taylor, 25, Ronton. Hunt's suit, filed by attorney Leo M. Koenigsbetg, said his bride enticed him into marriage for the purpose of getting him to switch his riding talents from the horses of Wayne Branch to those of the bride's parents. Hunt said that last Saturday his wife's parents took their string of horses to Salem, Ore., to race. He said his wife told him that she was going with them and that if he wanted to be with her, he would have to go wherever her parents did. Hunt said, however, that he was committed to ride Branch's horses at the Tanforan track in San Francisco. Hunt's suit asked a divorce if no annulment could be obtained. MEDFORD MUFFLER CO. The next cut, to 37 men, must be made before next Wednesday. The New York Jets of t h e AFL underwent the biggest s h a k e u p Tuesday when head coach Weeb Ewbank released 12 players, including quarter back Lee Grosscup. Ewbank also signed three of his for mer Baltimore Colts' players and placed two Jets on the in jured deferred list. Didn't Move Team Grosscup, a reserve quarter back vith the New York Giants in 1960 and 1961, was obtainel by the old New York Titans from the Minnesota Vikings last September. He broke into t h e AFL with a bang, passing for three touchdowns against the Oakland Raiders, but then suf fered torn knee ligaments. The popular, former Utah star must have anticipated the ax when he failed to complete a single touchdown pass as the Jots lost three out of four ex hibition games. "Lee looked good in practice but he didn't move the team well enough in the exhibition games," Ewbank said. The former Colts signed by Ewbank were quarterback Dick Wood, who played last season for the San Diego Chargers of the AFL, fullback Mark Smo linski and right end Dee Mac key. the Green Bay Packers, pre paring for the defense of their NFL championship, traded of fensive guard Ed Blaine to the Philadelphia Eagles and asked waivers on fullback Frank Mast nik and defensive halfback Doug Hart.
