Toronto (UPI) The Tor
onto Argonauts gave quarter
back Sandy Stephens a new
lease on his football life Tues
day by claiming the suspended
ex-Minnesota quarterback from
the Montreal Alouettes for the
$350 waiver price.
Stephens, who led the Gophers
to the Rose Bowl in 1961 with
his fine pay and was the New
York Titans' first draft choice,
was suspended last week by the
Alouettes for being overweight
and causing dissension among
his teammates.
Argonaut coach Nobby Wirl
owski said of Stephens, "I can't
afford not to look at him. He's
a good football player."

land Open golf tournament.
The $30,000 meet is scheduled

Lewiston. Idaho (UPI)
Lewiston will be out to take a
2-0 lead in the Northwest league
playoff tonight after defeating
Yakima 7-6 in 10 innings in the
opening game of the best-of-five
series Tuesday.
Lewiston won Tuesday's game
when catcher Gordy Mackenzie
hit a home run on the first pitch
to him in the bottom of the 10th
inning.
Earlier Lewiston jumped into
a 6-0 lead with a six-run out
burst highlighted by Bryan
Dye's bases-loaded homer, only
to see Yakima tie the score in
the eighth at 6-6.
After tonight's game, the two
teams move to Yakima for the
concluding contests.

Junior Coffey, Ail-American can
didate at the Univer s i t y of
Washington, probably will be
lost to the Huskies for the 1963
season, team physician Dr. John
Geehan said Tuesday.
X-rays taken Tuesday after
noon revealed a break in the
hulking fullback's right foot was
in the same area as the fracture
which sidelined him during
spring practice.
The second break occurred in
practice Monday afternoon.
"Junior will be in some type
of a cast for at least six weeks,
the period needed for healing.
It would take at least another
two to three weeks for him to
get in shape, so it is doubtful
that he will be available to the
Huskies this fall," Geehan said.
He said the second break is
"very much of a coincidence
as Junior's foot was completely
healed."

United States Davis Cup
tennis committee, apparently
convinced that Eugene Scott
"belongs," named him today on
the squad that will compete on
the American Zone final against
Venezuela at Denver Sept. 13-15.
Scott was named to the four-
man squad along with Dennis

who was a standout in the U. S.
victory over Mexico at Los An
geles two weeks ago; Martin

NY Jets Release
As AFL Clubs Cut to 33 Limit

roster cuts were able to breathe
easier today, but "borderline"
members of National league
teams faced another week of
waiting for the ax to fall.
The AFL clubs made their fi
nal cuts Tuesday, reducing their
rosters to the 33-man limit for
the start of the 1963 season next
week end.

Seattle - (UPI) - Gerald
Hunt, leading jockey at Long
acres Race track and third in
wins in the United States, Tues
day filed suit in Superior Court
here for an annulment of his 10
day old marriage to the former
Shirley Taylor, 25, Ronton.
Hunt's suit, filed by attorney
Leo M. Koenigsbetg, said his
bride enticed him into marriage
for the purpose of getting him
to switch his riding talents from
the horses of Wayne Branch to
those of the bride's parents.
Hunt said that last Saturday
his wife's parents took their
string of horses to Salem, Ore.,
to race. He said his wife told
him that she was going with
them and that if he wanted to
be with her, he would have to
go wherever her parents did.
Hunt said, however, that he
was committed to ride Branch's
horses at the Tanforan track in
San Francisco.
Hunt's suit asked a divorce if
no annulment could be obtained.

fered torn knee ligaments.
The popular, former Utah
star must have anticipated the

"Lee looked good in practice
but he didn't move the team
well enough in the exhibition
games," Ewbank said.
The former Colts signed by

key. the Green Bay Packers, pre
