MEDF0R9iWrRIBUNI siPODuinrs Ewbahk Faces Task of Rebuilding New York Jets Editor's nott: This ii an other in a leriei of dis patches sizing up the pros pects of pro football teams for the 1963 season. By NORMAN MILLER UPI Sports Writer New York - IUPW - This is the season in which Wecb Ew bank's reputation as a pro football coaching genius will be tested to the limit. Energetic E w b a n k, who five years ago guided the Bal timore Colts to the first of two straight National Football league championships, faces the monumental task of mak ing a respectable team of the New York Jets in the Ameri can league. The Jets have lost all three of their exhibition games so far. For three seasons as the New York Titans under the owner ship of controversial Harry Wismer, this club ex perienced a chaotic existence. There was constant bicker Mng between Wismer and his .coaches. Players said they had no play - books diagramming 'their assignments. And there "were weeks when they were not sure whether their pay . checks would come through cm time. 'Finishes Last , Last year's team, coached by Bulldog Turner, compiled "a 5-9 record and wound up lasl in the Eastern division. What's more, the'old Wismer regime did not sign a single college draftee before selling "the franchise to a syndicate .headed by Sonny Werblin. Ewbank, signed to a five "year contract as coach and "general manager, hired a new , staff of assistants; changed the nickname to "Jets" and the "uniform colors to green and 'white; and has set out to '. create a new image that might . make AFL fans forget about the woebegone Titans. " That, however, will take "some doing, and realistic 55-year-old Weeb has no illu- sions about what's in store for "him and his Jets. ' "Because of our lack of draft choices, we are three years behind the other clubs in the league," Ewbank stresses. . Have Some Assets The Jets do have a few " assets. There's Bill Mathis, 1961 All-AFL fullback who appears recovered from last year's in- "juries; Dick Christy, the league's ninth-ranked rusher Women's Golf Rogue Valley Country club women golfers held the fourth play on the Trans-Mississippi disc on Thursday, Aug. 22. Winners were: A group, a tic, Mrs. Jackie Allen and Mrs. Charles McCuan; B group, Mrs. Fred Conrad; C group, Mrs. Charles Mc Adams; D group, Mrs. Fitz hugh Brewer. Nine hole medal play winner was Mrs. William Tycer with Mrs. Willis Williams runnerup. Because of the Southern Oregon golf tournament, there will be no ladies' day on Thursday, Aug. 29. Pairings below are for Sept. 5 when the play will be blind hole for both the nine and 18-hole groups. After signing up for a starting time, ladies of the 18-holc division are asked to contact others in their four some. On Saturday, Aug. 31. the ladies will hostess the annual champagne luncheon in the Starlite room at 1 p.m. at the country club. Any WGA mem ber not contacted by phone is to call the club for a lunch con reservation. Ladies wishing information may telephone Mrs. James Cowning, 773-2974. Sent. What Ewbank would like most is to settle the quarter b a c k battle between Lee Grosscup and Johnny Green. Weeb would prefer to have one quarterback go all Uic way once the season starts. He thus has used Grosscup and Green each for an entire half during pre-season games, hoping one will beat out the other for the job. With his vast knowledge of players and excellent con tacts made during his eight NFL seasons, Ewbank has signed several players he feels can improve the Jets. They are former Colts - Sher man Plunkett, 290-pound of fensive tackle; linebacker Dave Yohn, and running back Bob Clemens. Other Newcomers Other Jets' newcomers are: Gene Heeter, a tight end picked up from San Diego in the AFL's equalization draft; Dan Ficca, guard acquired in a trade with Oakland; Bill Lopasky, a guard let go by the San Francisco Forty Niners; John Kapele and Will Renfro, former defensive line men for t h e Philadelphia Eagles; and tackle Bruce Tar box and pass-catcher Glen Knight, two former New York Giants who stayed out of foot ball in 1962. And among the reliable ex Titans are center Mike Hu dock, linebacker Ed Cooke, defensive linemen Bob Wa ters and Dick Guesman, and defensive backs Dainard Paulson, Lee Riley and Billy Atkins. The prospects of bettering 1962's last-place finish are not bright. But you can't keep irrepressible Weeb from try ing. 3 Qualify At Portland Portland -lUPIl John. From the way he is uitch ing for the Hawaii Islanders. it sure looks that way. Bo, warming up the record crowd of 16.954 which turned out at Honolulu Stadium Mon day night for the Islanders' final home game of the sea son, pitched a neat four-hitter to lead Hawaii to a 6-0 victory over Spokane. In gaining his third victory without a loss since being sent to Hawaii by the parent Los Angeles, Bo set the Indians down with ease. He didn't permit a runner to reach third and hardly was in trouble.
