WITH FOLK DANCEHS-Mrs. Nina Khrush chevc center, wife of the Soviet Premier, has broad smile as she dances with Mon- ' tenegro folk dancers in Cetinie, Yugoslavia, , Plumb Shifty-Eyed West's Wife Says New Plunging Neckline Creations Won't Sell , Washington -IUPII- Earlier i this summer , there was an in teresting bit of news from Paris concern ing one of the famous fashion de signers. This designer, who is so famous I have forgot ten his name, was reported to, be featur ing extremely revealing necklines in his new fall-creations, I.-!" " Although delicately phras ed, the account I read con veyed the impression that he was bringing a significant por tion of milady's rib cage into the public domain. When I called this to the attention of my wife, who is an authority on such matters, she told me it would never become fashionable. Natural ly I asked why not. "Because," she said, "fash Ions are set by women who can afford to buy originals, and too many rich women are flatchested." Favorably Endowtd Since her own rib cage is more favorably endowed than my bank account, it may be that she was Just being catty. But I devoutly hope that she correctly called the shot. Having been through a rath er trying summer of ignoring women's knees, I simply am not in condition to spend the , winter overlooking their rib cages. ' Somewhere there Is a por trait of a lady, also so famous I have forgotten her. name, whose eyes appear to follow you no matter from what angle you view the painting. This same optical illusion, as I have pointed out before, occurs in women's knees. Time after time I have been accused of staring at their knees, whereas actually, their knees are staring at me. It is all very ncrvewracking. Hurricane Beulah Will Miss Land Miami - (UPll - Hurricane Beulah, the season's second tropical storm, ran a speedy but harmless course southeast of Bermuda today and weathermen said she was no threat to land areas. The latest advisory located the 105-mile-an-hour winds around Beulah's center at lat itude 29.6 north, . longitude 60.5 west, or about 325 miles southeast of the British resort. Gales extended 250 miles from the hurricane's center In the northeast semicircle and about 150 miles to the south west. Beulah was moving in a northerly course at nearly 12 miles an hour which would send her "well to the east of Bermuda today," the Miami Weather Bureau said. If two or more women are present, it is 'impossible to avert one's eyes. The entire room becomes a sea of knees. Usually Shift It has been my expectation that the summer would bring surcease. During the summer, women usually shift into shorts. When that happens, their knees are not ns discon certing as when they arc wearing skirts. Its not an ideal situation, but I can liva with it. This summer, however, many women did not shift into shorts. Instead, they shift ed into shifts. A shift, as you know, is a loose fitting garment that only touches the body in four places. Sometimes the wrong four. But that is not its main drawback. What makes a shift intoler able is that it not only fnils to cover the knees; it is split up the side as well. For someone already in the throes of a knee complex, the effect is shatter ing. It has made me plumb shifty-eyed. The Medical Roundup Emeritus Consultant In Medlclim Mayo runic Emerltui Prufessnr of Medlcint Mayo C little (Resuter aud Trlhiin Syndicate, 1963) RESTLESS LEGS In a recent article, Dr. R. J. Popkin of Los Angeles wrote of the restless legs which some of my highly ner vous patients have been complain 1 n g about for the last 30 years. As Dr. Popkin says, Ekbom wrote on this subject inl 1945. Aiv.rci I am sorry to say I found but little help in Ekbom's work. Several men have blamed the syndrome on an Interference with the circula tion in the veins of the legs, but I have not gained this im pression. Popkin says Bena dryl, In a dosage of 50 mg. at bed-time, will help half of the patients, but Dr. N. B. Nord landcr recently said that Benadryl can sometimes pro voke attacks of restless legs. One can combine Benadryl with a barbiturate. Tranquil izers and sedatives and qui nine have been used, but most of my patients say they get very little, if any, help from such drugs. A few of my pa tients are helped by codeine, or codeine plus aspirin. Pop kin admits what is true, that most persons with restless legs are very resistant to all kinds of treatment. Persons with "restless legs" may complain of strange feel ings in the legs feelings perhaps of crawling insects, or cold, weakness, "pins and needles," burnings, and pain. The distress can come during the day. Whenever I see a person in the office with legs that are twitching, I have electro encephalograms made, and sometimes they show peculiar "spikes and seizure discharg es" similar to those of epilep sy. In such cases, I try some Dilantin, and sometimes it works well. There are several types of goiter about which the person who suspects thyroid trouble should know. Dr. Alvarez tells about them in his booklet on the subject. You may get a copy of it by simply sending 25 cents and a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your request for it to Dr. Walter C. Hoffa prepared Saturday to draw up demands for a na tionwide trucking contract covering 450,000 drivers, me chanics, warehousemen and clerks starling early in 1964. More than 200 teamsters' of ficials were called to a two day meeting at union head quarters here this week to confer on the wage-benefit package to be sought from an estimated 514,000 employers. Hoffa, who has conducted area - wide negotiations for the past three years to get greater uniformity, was said to be optimistic this t i m e about obtaining a single na tional pact.
