The bridegroom-elect is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Tichenor, Alsea, Ore. Miss Birge, a graduate of Medford High school, now is entering her junior year at Good Samaritan hospital school of nursing, Portland. Her fiance, formerly a stu dent at Oregon College of Ed ucation, is majoring in sec ondary education. At the pres ent he is stationed with the Army at Ft. Ord., Calif., for basic training. No wedding date has been set. Judith Ann Birge I 5p? jJ Carole Lee Newland Bride of John Hanson A number of Medford resi dents were in Eugene to at tend the August 11 ceremony which wedded Miss Carole Lee Newland and John Ed ward Hanson. The Rev. Wil liam Rees, of St. Matthews Episcopal Mission, officiated for the rites held in St. Mary's Episcopal church in the Wil lamette valley city. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. New land, Eugene, former Medford residents. Mr. Newland was head track coach for Medford High school and now is vice principal in North Eugene High school, and assistant track coach. The bridegroom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Hanson, Tacoma, Wash., who also at tended the ceremony. The bride's gown of peau de "oie was styled with an Alcncon lace bodice, and a chapel train. She carried a bouquet of blue gardenias with stephanotis and ivy. Her elbow length veil was held by a small crown. Mrs. Gary Buell, Spring field, the matron of honor, also wore a peau de soie gown in peacock blue shade and her matching headdress with short veil was accented by a green Dior rose. Her flowers were blue and white daisies with ivy which she carried in a golden basket. The bride's sister. Miss Can dy Newland, and Miss Mary Donnelly, Portland, were the bridesmaids. Their gowns and flowers matched those of the matron of honor. Bowerman, form er Medford resident, and Miss Alette Appel poured the punch. Assisting were the Misses Penny and Ann Rix. Miss Mary Girton, Portland, registered the guests. The couple traveled to Can ada for their wedding trip, and planned lo visit Vancouv er, Victoria, Banff and Lake Louise. They ore to retiirn September 1 to live at 2164 West Seventeenth avenue, Eugene. The bridegroom is working towards his doctor ate degree at the University of Oregon where he is as sistant dean of men. The bride also will continue university work. She attended Medford schools. Among guests from out of town were the bride's grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Vaughn, Portland, and her grandmother, Mrs. C. W. New -land, Medford. Also from Medford were Jack and Gary Vaughn. Student Here Talent - Miss Virginia Johnson, a student nurse at Emanuel hospital, Portland, is spending a two-week vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Barger, 314 South First street. Wilkes, Roseburg, announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Judith Marie Wilkes, to Phillip Clinton Reeves, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin H. Dusenbury, 2295 North Pacific highway, Med ford. Miss Wilkes, a 1962 grad uate of Roseburg High school, has attended Northwest Naz arene college, Nampa, Ida., for the past year. She is ma joring in secondary education. The bridegroom - elect, a 1958 graduate of Crater High school, has been attending Oregon Technical Institute, Klamath Falls, for the past five years. He now is com pleting his education in civil engineering and is to graduate in March. The wedding, planned for the summer in 1964, is to be held in Roseburg First Church of the Nazarcne. Durham, 134 Church street, will observe their golden wed ding anniversary Tuesday, August 27 when their daugh ter and four sons will be hosts for an evening reception on the Durham lawn from 7 to 10 o'clock. Arriving In Ashland for celebration and family reun ion are Mrs. C. H. Apencs and her husband and chil dren, Carl and Esta Louise, from Washington. D.C.; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Durham and family, Lompoc, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Meredith Durham, Elgin Air Force base, Fla.; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Durham and family, Fairchild Air Force base, Spokane, Wash., and Mr. and Mrs. Elrion Dur ham and daughters, Phoenix, Ore. Mr. and Mrs. Durham are longtime residents of Ash land. The family has asked that no gifts be sent. Church Women Plan Brunch, Bridal Shower The Women's fellowship of the First Baptist church will meet Tuesday, August 27, in the Fireplace room at the new church on Crater Lake ave nue for their annual brunch. Serving will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Mrs. Larry Adams in charge. Special gucsls for the day will be Mrs. Nell Grubb and her four daughters. Mrs. Grubb and her late husband worked for many years with the Kurku people of India un der the Conservative Foreign ' Mission board of Baptist churches. She will be speaker of the day, telling of her work in India. Immediately following the brunch, all of those inter ested are invited to a miscel laneous and "silver tree" bri dal shower for Miss Marcene Eaden, fiancee of the Rev. Ned Landers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Landers, Medford. All women and girls of the church are invited to the brunch and meeting? follow ing. A nursery will be provided for pre-school children. The Rev. William M c L e o d celebrated the nuptial mass and officiated for the 10:30 o'clock mar riage rites. The bride, a lifelong resi dent of the valley, is a daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Patrick Dugan, 1100 West Valley View road, Ashland. The bridegroom is a son of Mrs. G. O. Vilott, Ajo, Ariz., and Donald Goodwin, Pres cotl, Ariz. Mr. Dugan escorted his daughter to the altar. The bride's sheath-style gown of taffeta was street length and designed with a matching overskirt. The bod ice, made with a scoop neck line, was trimmed with se quins. A white velvet band with front bow held her shoulder length veil. She carried a bouquet of white carnations and roses. Four Attend Bride Mrs. Philip Austin, Bur ncy, Calif., a cousin of the bride, was the honor attend ant. Another cousin, Mrs. Donald Rust, Sacramento Calif., was bridesmatron and Miss Pauline Niederberger, Dundee, Ore., was brides maid. Carolyn Clark was junior bridesmaid and Cath erine Clark was flower girl. Both are from Medford and are cousins of the bride. All wore matching pastel cotton street length frocks with full skirts, Mrs. Austin in yellow, Mrs. Rust and Catherine Clark in pink, and Miss Niederberger and Caro lyn Clark in blue. The at tendants carried nosegay bouquets with flowers which matched their dresses. Mrs. Rust is the former Miss Marilyn Whitman, and her sister, Mrs. Austin, is the former Miss Josephine Whit man, both formerly of Med ford. Their weddings were events of this summer in the same church. The three, Miss Dugan, Mrs. Rust and Mrs. Austin, have served in the bridal groups for each other, Patrick Dugan, Ashland, a brother of the bride, was best man. Reception at Hall Some 125 guests attended the ceremony and the recep- tion held later by the bride's parents at the Knights of Co lumbus hall. Mrs. Carl Howarth, St. Hel ens, Ore., aunt of the bride, cut and served the wedding cake; Mrs. Timothy Dugan poured the coffee, while Mrs. Jack Birmingham, El Cerrito, Calif., and Mrs. M. C. Deva- ncy, Snn Francisco, an aunt of the bride, presided at the punch bowl. For her daughter s wedding ; and reception, Mrs. Dugan ' wore a pastel pink brocade dress with jacket and the bridegroom's mother chose a frock of turquoise blue lace, with jacket. Both wore pink carnation corsages. Among the guests from out of town were the bridegroom's father. D. A. The bride attended St. Mary's school, Medford, and the University of Portland. She has been a teacher of vocal and instrumental music at Ml. Angel Public schools, Mt. Angel, Ore. The bridegroom, who also attended St. Mary's school is a student at Arizona State college, Flagstaff, Ariz. The couple will live in that city. They made their wedding trip to San Francisco and Arizona. Eugene Rites Ashland"- More than 250 guests attended the wedding and reception that followed in Santa Clara Church of Ch ist, Eugene, when Miss Dee Ann Haszard became the bride of Richard L. Halaas at an evening ceremony August 17. The bride, who is a student at Ozark Bible college, Joplin, Mo., is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Haszard, Eu gene. Her husband, whose par ents are Mrs. R. L. Talbott, Crescent City, Calif., and Ray Halaas, Ashland, is studying for the ministry in the same school. The Rev. James M. Caulley officiated, reading the service before an altar background of pink and white gladioli and snapdragons. Organ and vocal music preceded the rites. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a floor length gown of silk organza with appliqued overskirt, semi-scoop neckline and short sleeves. Her shoul der length illusion net veil fell from a pearlized floral spray and she carried a bou quet of carnations, stephanotis and pink rosebuds. In the wedding party were the bride's sister, Miss Marcia Haszard, serving as maid of honor, and bridesmaids Miss Linda Hofelrit, Miss Judy Dickinson and Miss Karen Eusted. Susan Scdegrcn was flower girl and David Eusted was ring bearer. Best man was Charles A. Miller and ushers were John Goodman, Bruce Hill and Harold Palmer II.
