(UPI) Cool Weather Fails To Lessen Crowd at Area Music Festival Last night's cool weather, failed to lessen the size of the audience at the Britt Gar dens Music festival perform ance in Jacksonville, or to dampen the enthusiasm. A large audience assembled, listened attentively and with evident enjoyment, and ap plauded warmly at the close. The program opened with the special fanfare by the brasses and orchestra used for every concert; this is impres sive but last night the play ing wasn't quite as smooth as past programs. However, the concerto for two trumpets and strinR orchestra, with James Smith and Charles Lauer as soloists, was well performed. The Manfrcdini work was followed by a "Concerto for Clarinet and String Orches tra'" by the contemporary composer. Aaron Copland, with David Atkins as soloist. Many listeners find the first portion of this composition rather dry and tedious, but the mood of the last part has more substance and appeal. If Copland means to reflect the tensions, distractions and fears of modern life, he suc ceeds to a degree in this com position. Accomplished Clarinetist Mr. Atkins is an accomplish ed clarinetist -the woodwind section of the festival orches tra is said to be especially Vallsy Plumbing, Inc. 865 Stewart Avenue Phone 773-3102 K All NEW rv"JLM the modtrn way I i i Time i But look at him whem mis wipe asks him to clean out the goldfish bowl"" fine and Mr. Atkins' musi- cianship has helped to build this reputation. The program closed with an excellent interpretation of Bach's "Suite No. 3 in D major" as directed by con ductor Trudeau. This is music to please an audience par ticularly the Air and last night the response from the listeners was most warm. For those who have not yet attended a concert of the new Britt festival, let us say that this type of program in the informal woodland and gar den setting offers many ad vantages. No one has to "dress up." Those in the audience wear any type of clothing which suits the fancy and taste and they bring blankets, pillows, folding chairs, back rests and all manner of equipment to make themselves comfortable. Others use the seating ar ranged at one side of the area. Pretty ushers, wearing bright blue dresses, have been faithfully in attendance at all performances and prove help ful. There is a refreshment stand where patrons may buy soft, cold drinks and in the evening there is also hot cof fee. Parents Bring Children Parents bring their chil dren, and if the small ones become restless or sleepy, it is an easy matter to make them comfortable on the slopes; the children bother no one, as is sometimes the case in an au ditorium. Patrons may smoke. or sip a beverage during the playing of the music. Some lean against trees, others stretch out full length and I contemplate the sky or stars while the music flows over them The Shakespearean festival at Ashland has brought de light and joy to many who at one '.'me believed that the Bard was only for the egg heads or scholars: now they know that Shakespeare is for everyone. Tins year s topic was gynecologic cancer. Friday evening's banquet speaker was Dr. Howard C. Stearns, clinical instructor in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the Uni versity of Oregon medical school. In opening his talk, Dr. Stearns told of his grandpar ents traveling by wagon to Medford where they were among the first settlers. Jack son st. now runs along one of the boundaries of the Stearns' grant which included much of the present downtown area. All of the lecturers com mended the Jackson County unit of the American Cancer Society for the series, com menting on the necessity for continuous education during the life of the physician. Dr. Donald G. McKay, New York City, Delafield professor of pathology in the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia university, stressed that a doctor is a student all his life. Medicine is constantly ac quiring new methods of diag nosis and treatment and it is through the efforts of organi zations such as the American Cancer Society that doctors are seeing a diminishing inci dence of certain type of can cer. Among the other speakers in the fields of pathology, radiology and gynecology for the lectures were Dr. James M. Whitely, president of the Oregon division, American Cancer Society, and a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Oregon medical school; Dr. Edward C. Hill, assistant pro fessor of gynecology and ob stetrics, University of Cali fornia medical school in San Francisco and Dr. Milton D. Hyman, assistant clinical pro fessor of radiology at the Uni versity of Oregon medical school. Among those who attended the lectures was Dr. Thomas Gillespie, San Francisco, west ern regional medical affairs director of the American Can cer Society. Both Dr. Hill and Dr. Gil lespie stressed the importance of routine complete examina tions for women. The lectures are sponsored by the local unit of the Ameri can Cancer Society through a grant established by the late John Tomlin. Dr. Otto R.
