Juveniles Arrested Fer Vehicle Theft , Two juveniles were appre hended by Medford police Sunday for theft of. a car owned by Gerald Milton Gas tlneau, 2647 Eastover terrace, Medford. The auto was taken, Gastineau reported, at the Medford Shopping Center while he was In a store. Officers located the car, took a 16-year-old boy into custody and then an 11-year- old, who was involved by the older youth's testimony. The 11-year-old was releas ed to his mother with the permission of Jackson County Juvenile Home Director Lar ry Tweedy. The 16-year-old was charged with larceny of a vehicle. , Louisiana was named from Louis XIV of France. Series of Violations Revealed At U.S. Armv Base in Greece Washington - lUPtl - A mem ber of the House Armed Serv ices committee has revealed a series of violations of mil itary regulations at an Army post in Greece, including use of enlisted men to sweep and mop the rooms of three officers. Rep. Victor Wickersham (D-Okla.) said an investiga tion he started two weeks ago had uncovered "deplor able violations" at the 19th missile detachment. In addition to the enlisted men housekeeping duties, he said the investigation showed that: Covered Up Goods were stolen from the post exchange and the thefts were covered up by the PX officers and the unit commander. Foreign nationals made purchases illegally at the post exchange. Moldy bread and sour milk were served at meals. Troops were served only two meals on July 4 and June 30. Wickersham said that in ventory shortages at the post exchange were covered up but that detachment person nel were forced to make up the differences out of their own pockets. He added that the shortages were not report ed to higher authorities. The Army informed Wick ersham this week that the charges were true and that a new unit commander had been assigned to the detach ment. Wickersham said that "ar rangements for daily fresh bread have been made, the Greek interpreter will not be allowed to eat in the mess hall in the future, the PX shortages are being made up by the personnel concerned, and enlisted personnel will not be required to sweep and mop officers' rooms." In addition, he said, Greek personnel will not be able to purchase cigarettes and beer at the PX. The Oklahoma congressman continued his inquiry with a letter to Army Secretary Cy- China Hopes U.S., Russia Will Destroy Each Other Washington -ttlPD- Red Chi na hopes to see the United States and Russia destroy each other in a nuclear war, former ambassador to Russia George F. Kennan said Sun day. Because of this stand. Ken nan said the ideological split between Russia and China will not be healed. Agreed to Sign In a television interview, Kennan said Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev agreed to sign a nuclear test ban pact with the West when he real ized that the Chinese-Russian split could not be smoothed over. He appeared on NBC s Meet the Press. However, Kennan said it would take "decades" to bring Russia closer to the West. But he added that "any progress is hopeful and should be val ued by us.". Buyer Beware Kennan warned that the United States should take a "buyer beware" attitude to ward the nuclear test ban pact. "I think the question is whether Russia has an inter est in sticking to the treaty," Kennan said. Clerks May Not Levy Petition Fee Salem - HOT - County clerks do not have authority to levy any fees on the circulators of initiative and referendum pe tions, Atty. Gen. Robert Y. Thornton said today. The statement was in an swer to a request made by Secretary of State Howell Appling Jr. the state's chief elections officer. Appling asked if county clerks had authority to charge the sponsors of initiative or referendum movements for the verification of signatures in excess of 200 per day.
