They are curious about many events in their daily lives and parents should encourage this atti tude. A proper response to chil dren's questions can be most helpful to encourage their curiosity. Science, for chil dren, is a 'way of discovering new knowledge. They "learn to organize facts and con cepts so that they can under stand the world around them. The school program aims to develop skills in problem solving, a scientific attitude. an interest in the world in which we live. It should de velop practical knowl e d g-e It also is important to en courage children with special talents and interests in science to pursue learning in this im portant subject. At home parents can do many important things for their children. To her, it is a discouraging business for someone . steals those-eggs as fast as she pro duces them.-But to her ever lasting credit, let it be said she never gives up; she keeps on trying, and with, rare good nature too. v Did you ever think .about the time,, effort and trouble the hen .went to producing an egg that you thoughtlessly ate for breakfast this.. morning? That unknown hen; with only one thought, in. mind, and urged on by biological insist ence, plans on raising a fam- ily-that s why she . lays the eggs. About the best her; in ternal machinery can accom plish is. an egg a day. . ' Discouraging Labor . Her egg-laying is. a-discour aging labor, tor, someone steals those eggs. So, Mrs. Hen attempts, to ."steal her rlest," that is,. hide it, in an attempt to save those precious eggs. If .she - succeeds, . those .egs won't go to market; no one but her will. know where they are, and. she, wijl be sneaky about ' them, .'. even, inay be smart .enough to. a.vOid going near the nest ; when , anyone is watching. " . The ;hen . tnat. "steals- ner nest" may. be one whose toa- tience.was. worn thin' by hav- ina her - egBs stolen, or one that desires motherhood over and above human desire to find more eggs for more-prof it, or for better breakfasts. So she sneaks away, scratches out a hole in the sand under a bush, or -locates a pile of straw or leaves. Having lo cated when she ' considers a suitable spot, she -begins, day by day, to accumulate a set ting, of eggs.. . , . . . Internal Effort Perhaps she doesn't realize it,, she is hot supposed to be an intellectual genius, ' out she must know that laying an egg, even, one' a day, requires enormous internal effort; no human could do it. . - Sn she has the location, and has laid 'the eggs; she knows when she has laid enough, for some little biological button is pushed by jn instincj, over which'she.bas no control, and she begins the ino'ubation pe riod. She enters willingly into weeks of inactivity, short rattons.'-.and 'considerable dis comfort. ' - - ' - ' '" Of course iht has no knowl edge of -what gravity can do to -the yolk 01 those eggs sne is .trying to hatch. She doesn't know.that,-if left too long in One position,- the yolk will settle, pulling it out of the proper position. So-again without ' knowing why!, she carefully turns ever egg every day. ; : ; .' She Will Be There . . When she leaves, the nest, and if she doesn't want to starve to death she must leave at times, she knows exactly how long she can remain away. Those eggs cannot be allowed to become cold. There is no way of knowing whethtr or not Mrs. Hen knows about the time the chicks will hatch; really, she wouldn't hae to know, she will be there when ever the day, or the hour.. She will know too, when the first chick staggers out of its limey shell, wet, and t be draggled. Another virtue he possesses, whatever . the out come, of all her efforts, if one chick hatches,, or a dozen, she will be content, seeming to know she had done her part. She has stuck to the job until it was finished. She was faith ful, patient, and determined. Many humans could very. well emulate her faithfulness to duty. - ; NOW YOU KNOW United Praia International The leaves of Victoria Re- a giant South American water lily, measure about seven feet in diameter and -e strong enough to support child, according: to the Na tional Geographic Society.
