OREGON School Buses To Phoenix - Buses transport ing student in the Phoenix- Talent school district 4 will start operating the first day Campgrounds Are Open in Winema Klamath Falls All camp grounds are open in the Lake , of the Woods area on the Klamath district of Winema : national forest, with the ex ; ception of Aspen Camp ground, which is expected to be open for limited use by Labor Day week end, accord ing to report from forest . rangers. Spruce and Rainbow camp grounds and White Pine pic- nic ground are receiving ' heavy use. Digit Point camp ground at Miller Lake on the ; Chemult district is closed Be cause of construction. The warm weather has I made camping "excellent" on the Winema National forest and extensive use is being ' made of camping facilities, the forest report discloses. Williamson campground is re ceiving heavy use, according to Homer Faulkner, Chiloquln district ranger. All trails on the Klamath district are open. A one ana a half mile section of the Sevenmile trail has been re constructed. Trails to Mamu lake and around Miller lake on the Chemult district are open. Howlock Mountain trail on the Cnemuit cunrict is open for a mile. Fishing is Improving on all streams on the Chiloquln dis trict and remains good at Lake of the Woods, accord ing to the forest report. Fire danger is high. There were 13 lightning fires and 4 man-caused fires on the for est last week. Union Accuses m mi I a u.j. PiywooQ corp. Anderson, Calif. - HOT - The striking Lumber and Sawmill , Workers union has accused ine u. . riywuuu " : of using delaying tactics In opening negotiations on local issues of new contract. The union contended that ' the regional union council which negotiated 30V4 cent hourly wage package with tne Big Six lumber companies, Including U. S. Plywood, had ' no authority to negotiate any thing else. But a compay spokes man - said the agreement reached in Portland for the Big Six pruviacu umi iicguijaiiuiio v.. local issues would not include items not already covered by the contract. Meanwhile, the Internation al Paper Co. at Weed, Calif., announced negotiations on lo cal issues would be held Aug. 17-28. Three Sessions Are Set for Workshop ' Three different sessions are planned Tuesday In the elementary - team teaching workshop at Hoover school. Observers may view the proceedings via closed circuit television. The schedule Tues day Includes a science session on "spectrum" between 9:25 and 8:50, a math session on "intersection of sets" be tween 9:55 and 10:35 a.m. and large group Instruction in so cial sttidle between 10:50. nd 11:45 a.m. Persons interested In ob serving proceedings of the workshop should contact the Hoover school office the day prior to the presentation. The workshop is being con ducted by a four-member team from Lexington, Mass., and will continue throughout the week. Robbery Suspect Gives Up in Eugene Eugene -(WO- A 23-year-old man,, charged with the armed robbery of bank at Madison, Mo., last month, surrendered here Friday. Gerald Lee Mudd of Mon roe City, Mo., is accused of taking 4,540 from the bank July 15. He told the FBI that he gave himself up because he was out of money and tired of running. He was lodged at the Lane county jail on a charge of vio lating the federal bank rob bery statute. Mudd said that he went to Reno, Nev., where he made $1,500 by gambling but said he then was robbed of all but $300 by a gunman in the city. PROMISES ACTION Washington - HOT - Secre tary of State Dean Rusk prom ises the United States will do everything It can to settle the religious controversy in South Viet Nam. Rusk said the U.S. government was "deeply distressed" by the conflict between President Ngo Dinh Diem and the Viet namese Buddhists. Start Sept. 9 in Phoenix District of school, Monday, Sept. repeating last year's schedule, E. R. James, superintendent of schools, has announced Seventh and eighth grade students will be transported to the junior high school at Talent, and senior high school students will be taken to the high school at Phoenix. Children in the elementary grades will be transported di rectly to the Phoenix and Tal ent grade schools. Rtport to Primary First grade pupils are to report to the primary units in the two schools, preferably with a parent or adult mem ber of the family Friday, Sept. 6. for registration Parents are asked to bring their child's birth certificate or other evidence of age and a health certificate. The chil dren will return home imme diately after registration and 'Duffy's Tavern' Bartender Dies Hollywood - (UPD - Come dian Ed Gardner, who won fame on radio in the role of 'Archie" on "Duffy's Tav ern," died Saturday at Good Samaritan hospital at the age of 62. Cause of his death was list ed as a "diseased liver." Gardner was on radio with "Duffy's Tavern" for 20 years and the show also had a year's run on television. As "Duffy," Gardner portrayed a blunder ing bartender. The veteran radio and tele vision comedian was born in Astoria, Long Island, on June 29, 1901. He developed the character of Archie while he was a pro ducer and director for a ma jor radio network in 1939. But it was not until 1941 that a sponsor signed the "Duffy's Tavern" show. Gardner, a tall, gangling comedian, was in semi-retirement during the last five years. Gardner- is survived by his widow, Simone, whom he mar ried 21 years ago, and two teen-age sons, Edward Jr., 19, and Stephen, IS. Sgt. Alvin York Seriously III Nashville, Tenn. -(UPD- Sgt Alvin York, 75, World War I hero and Medal of Honor winner, Is reported seriously ill at Veterans hospital. York was admitted to the hospital July 8. Dr. W. C. Wil liams, hospital director, said the old soldier's temperature began climbing Friday morn ing and that York was more "unresponsive to surround ings." Whether this particular sit uation Is related to his previ ous medical condition is un known," Williams said. York has been hospitalized five times in the past year for treatment of a variety of ill nesses. York was credited with kill ing 25 Germans and capturing 132 others in one day of fight ing in the Argonne Forest in 1918. Prospect Voters Approve District Prospect - Voters here approved formation of the proposed Prospect Rural Fire Protection district Friday, casting 35 "yes" votes. No votes were cast in opposition to the measure. Voters also chose a live member board of directors to serve the district. The members elected arc John Davidson of the Pacific Power and Light station area, 34 votes; Jack DcRoiscr, Cas cade Gorge area, 35 votes; H. D. (Doug) Kimmons, Prospect area, 35 votes; Rex Norman, Red Blanket area, 35 votes; and Madeline Poole, Wild wood area, 33 votes. Portland Lawyer's Tax Trial Ends Portland -HOT- The income tax trial of Portland attorney Reuben Lenske ended Friday in Federal Court after nearly five months of testimony. Federal Judge James C Carter of San Diego gave de fense attorney Charles Bur- dell, Seattle, five days to file a written motion for acquit tal. Lenske was accused of evad ing taxes on about $100,000 in income on returns filed in 1935, 1937 and 1958. The trial record amounts to more than 8,000 pages of testimony and more than 3, 100 exhibits were introduced HAS THE EVIDENCE Marshfield, Wis. - (UPD -Police Officer Raymond Blanchard didn't go far for evidence when he answered a complaint that Eugene CI chon'f dog had bitten a neigh bor. When Blanchard enter ed the Chichon household to Investigate, the dog bit him. v. 9, parents are expected to pro- vide this transportation James said. Children of the second and third grades report on the first day of school, Monday, Sept. 9, to the primary build ings at Talent and Phoenix Pupils in grades four to six are to report to the elemen tary school buildings on the same day. These pupils will be dismissed at noon and the buses will make their regular runs at this time on the first day. Cafeteria to Serve Both school cafeterias will start serving meals on Tues day, Sept. 10. Students new to the Phoe nix High school are asked to register at the high school office Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students registered last spring need not appear before the open ing day. They may, however, come in during the first week in September if they have questions to ask regarding their program of studies. On the first day of school Sept. 9, high school students are to report lo tne nign school gymnasium for open ing assembly at 8:40 a.m. Regular classes will get un der way the following day. Ford Grant To Aid Oregon Program Salem -(UPD- Receipt of a $1.2 million Ford Foundation grant to support the Oregon Program was announced Fri day by the State Department of Education. The money will be used by local schools, colleges and the State Department of Educa tion cooperating under the Oregon Program in efforts to improve Oregon education in the public schools. Dr. Leon P. Minear, super intendent of public instruc tion, said improvements in ed ucation resulting from the pro gram "will result in a more effective use of the lax dol lar." Oregon Program partici pants include the State De partment of Education, nine Oregon colleges and univer sities, and 20 school districts. The money will be used to further such items as intern programs, team teaching, flex ible scheduling, nongraded programs, and the use of new technology in instruction, Mi near said. Matthews Receives Doctoral Degree Ashland-Glen T. Matthews, associate professor of music at Southern Oregon college. has received his doctoral- de gree fr-MTi the department of education at the University of Oregon. Title of his doctoral thesis was "An Analysis and Evalu ation of Methods for Training Skills in School Music Con ducting." The thesis was based on the idea that it is necessary to establish standards for the teaching of conducting in col leges and universities. Ample evidence was ad vanced in the study to indi cate that the teaching of con ducting was urgently needed and that the research in this area could lead to the increas ed efficiency of school music conductors through the con tinued upgrading of instruc tion in college and university classes. LeMay, McCone Join Test Ban Backers Washington -OJPII- Air Force Chief Curtis E. LcMay and Central Intelligence Director John A. McCone lined ud Frl. day in support ot the nuclear test ban treaty. But senators said Gen. Le May, former Strategic Air Command boss, expressed stronger reservations than those voiced by other mem bers of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Both LeMay and McCone who headed the Atomic Ener gy Commission under Presi dent Dwight D. Eisenhower, testified before different com mittees, however, that the treaty is "compatible" with U.S. security, assuming that underground testing will be continued and other safe, guards" are maintained. Housing Is Sought For School Teachers School District 849C, Med ford, has requested assistance in securing housing for new and returning teachers to the district this year. School administrators said there is need for two and three bedroom houses and apartments. Molalla feed Mill Destroyed by Fire Molalla - (UPD - Fire de stroyed the Molalla Feed Mill here Saturday and caused some $50,000 damage. Firemen fought the blaze for five hours. Defective wiring was given as the cause of the blaze which apparently started from a machine room and en gulfed the rambling two- story structure.
