Robbery Suspect
Gives Up in Eugene
Eugene -(WO- A 23-year-old
man,, charged with the armed
robbery of bank at Madison,
Mo., last month, surrendered
here Friday.
Gerald Lee Mudd of Mon
roe City, Mo., is accused of
taking 4,540 from the bank
July 15. He told the FBI that
he gave himself up because
he was out of money and tired
of running.
He was lodged at the Lane
county jail on a charge of vio
lating the federal bank rob
bery statute.
Mudd said that he went to
Reno, Nev., where he made
$1,500 by gambling but said
he then was robbed of all but
$300 by a gunman in the city.

'Duffy's Tavern'
Bartender Dies
Hollywood - (UPD - Come
dian Ed Gardner, who won
fame on radio in the role of
'Archie" on "Duffy's Tav
ern," died Saturday at Good
Samaritan hospital at the age
of 62.
Cause of his death was list
ed as a "diseased liver."
Gardner was on radio with
"Duffy's Tavern" for 20 years
and the show also had a year's
run on television. As "Duffy,"
Gardner portrayed a blunder
ing bartender.
The veteran radio and tele
vision comedian was born in
Astoria, Long Island, on June
29, 1901.
He developed the character
of Archie while he was a pro
ducer and director for a ma
jor radio network in 1939.
But it was not until 1941 that
a sponsor signed the "Duffy's
Tavern" show.
Gardner, a tall, gangling
comedian, was in semi-retirement
during the last five
years.
Gardner- is survived by his
widow, Simone, whom he mar
ried 21 years ago, and two
teen-age sons, Edward Jr., 19,
and Stephen, IS.

winner, Is reported seriously
ill at Veterans hospital.
York was admitted to the
hospital July 8. Dr. W. C. Wil
liams, hospital director, said
the old soldier's temperature
began climbing Friday morn
ing and that York was more
"unresponsive to surround
ings." Whether this particular sit
uation Is related to his previ
ous medical condition is un
known," Williams said.
York has been hospitalized
five times in the past year for
treatment of a variety of ill
nesses.
York was credited with kill
ing 25 Germans and capturing
132 others in one day of fight
ing in the Argonne Forest in
1918.

Approve District
Prospect - Voters here
approved formation of the
proposed Prospect Rural Fire
Protection district Friday,
casting 35 "yes" votes. No
votes were cast in opposition
to the measure.
Voters also chose a live
member board of directors to
serve the district.

Tax Trial Ends

tax trial of Portland attorney
Reuben Lenske ended Friday
in Federal Court after nearly
five months of testimony.
Federal Judge James C
Carter of San Diego gave de
fense attorney Charles Bur-
dell, Seattle, five days to file
a written motion for acquit
tal. Lenske was accused of evad
ing taxes on about $100,000
in income on returns filed in
1935, 1937 and 1958.
The trial record amounts
to more than 8,000 pages of
testimony and more than 3,
100 exhibits were introduced

ing day. They may, however,

in September if they have
questions to ask regarding
their program of studies.

Ford Grant To Aid
Oregon Program
Salem -(UPD- Receipt of a
$1.2 million Ford Foundation
grant to support the Oregon
Program was announced Fri
day by the State Department
of Education.
The money will be used by
local schools, colleges and the
State Department of Educa
tion cooperating under the
Oregon Program in efforts to
improve Oregon education in
the public schools.
Dr. Leon P. Minear, super
intendent of public instruc
tion, said improvements in ed
ucation resulting from the pro
gram "will result in a more
effective use of the lax dol
lar." Oregon Program partici
pants include the State De
partment of Education, nine
Oregon colleges and univer
sities, and 20 school districts.
The money will be used to
further such items as intern
programs, team teaching, flex
ible scheduling, nongraded
programs, and the use of new
technology in instruction, Mi
near said.

was "An Analysis and Evalu
ation of Methods for Training

ducting." The thesis was based on the
idea that it is necessary to
establish standards for the
teaching of conducting in col
leges and universities.
Ample evidence was ad
vanced in the study to indi
cate that the teaching of con
ducting was urgently needed
and that the research in this
area could lead to the increas
ed efficiency of school music
conductors through the con
tinued upgrading of instruc
tion in college and university
classes.
