Only the peopli changed. They used lo come in wag ons or on loot. Now they arrive in air conditioned cars Calico was born in the early 1880s when three pros pectors discovered one of th richest veins of silver ore in history. Within a few months more than 4,000 persons took up residence in tents, lean-tos, and holes they picked out of the mountains. Calico died 16 years later and became a ghost town. To day the population is about 30. The town, nestled in the foothills of the Calico range was resurrected by Walter Knott of Knott's Berry farm, He spent more than $700, 000 restoring the decayed mining mecca ot the past lo cated 150 miles east of Los Angeles. The few residents live off the jingling pockets of lour ists who take a step into the past and relive the excite ment of the Old West It can be recaptured brief ly: A stroll down the board walk streets, past Lil's saloon, Hank's hotel, Lane's General store and the Calico Print first published in 1882. Mrs. Lucy B. Lane, a Calico resi dent in Its heyday, is still alive and has returned. She sits outside her store and wel comes the tourists as she used to greet the gun laden miners in her youth. Also Church Calica had fires, shootings and bordellos. But there was a school and a church too. Al so a Boothill For 16 years Calico lived gayly, boldly and bawdily, More than $88 million in sil ver poured from her mbun tains in those boisterous years $10 million from the Silver King mine alone. Veins of ore four feet wide were uncovered. Some ore as sayed at 200 to 400 ounces per ton. Today the tourists can take a ride through an old mine' shaft, ride a small railroad cart down the moun tain or pay 25 cents to view freshly dusted antiques When the price of silver dropped in 18D6 the hardy miners left In search of new riches and so did the rest. Some stayed behind in Boothill which overlooks the pock-marked hills. But ad venturers in the 1880s had a sense of humor even about dying. Pakistinis Save By Feeding Cattle Molasses By JOHN BARTON Karachi, Pakistan - IUPI) Pakistan livestock breeders and farmers may save a lot of money because an Ameri can animal nutrition expert likes molasses. Burch Schneider, who teaches at the West Pakistan Agricultural university in Lyallpur under contract with Washington State university and the U. S. Aid mission to Pakistan, discovered that 50,- 000 tons of molasses are dumped into rivers each year in Pakistan because sugar mill operators cannot find a market for it. He estimates the wasted mount of this proven source of highly digestible energy could replace grain raised on more than 100,000 acres of farm land. Schneider also learned through research that Pakis tani livestock breeders are using expensive and scarce grains such as barley to feed their animals. In food-short reas, this competition be tween man and livestock for the available supply of cereals is a serious problem. Import Grains In fact in many areas of Pakistan it is necessary to import food grains to prevent near famine conditions. The nutrition expert also found Pakistani farmers know very little about the value of molasses as an animal feed. Schneider decided to do something about it. He held demonstrations for farmers in the former Punjab rea so they could see the value of molasses as an animal feed and learn how its use Iso could save valuable cereals for human consump tion. Schneider selected ten pairs f bullocks for his demonstra tions. For a period of 20 weeks ne of each pair was fed a ration of barley while thp ther was fed a ration con taining molusses. At the end of the experi ment the weight differences between the two groups was statistically insignificant. what was significant, how ever, was the difference in the feed bills. Molasses can be delivered anywhere in West Pakistan in tank car lots for eight to twelve times less than barley. Schneider was pleased with the results of his demonstra tion, and farmers and suear ill operators share his en thusiasm. Farmers are inter- ted in a cheap, nutritious nimal feed. Sugar mills see ' new source of income from by-product previously thrown away. As sugar oro- ction increases, so will out put of molasses.
