Pitcher Vern Collins broke his right leg just above the ankle and is hospitalized. The injury, which included torn ligaments, occurred when the hurling ace slid into sec ond base in the top of the second inning. City Recreation Diving Classes Set Medford park and recrea tion department will conduct diving classes Aug. 5-16 at Jackson park pool. Miss Linda Hess will be instructor. Classes are scheduled at 10:30 and 11 a.m. Each of the classes will have 10 stu dents. More classes will be added if demand is sufficient. The Yank men won 10 of Thursday's 11 events against Germany's men's team to close out a 141-82 victory. Previously on the current tour, the Americans beat the Russians and Poles in similar dual meets. A spectacular victory in the 1,600 meter relay high lighted Thursday's action with Lester Milburn, Ulis Wil liams, Rex Craley and Henry Carr clocking 3:02.8 for the best time in this event any where in the world this year. The time was just short of the world record of 3:02.2 set by the United States in the 1960 Olympic Games. Miler Morgan Groth of Ore gon State and high jumper Paul Stuber of the University of Oregon played a big part in the U.S. victory. Groth won the 1,500 meters in 3:42.4, equivalent to a mile slightly under four minutes. He drove past Marine Cary Weisiger in the stretch for the victory. Stuber won the high jump at 6-7 on fewer misses than Germany's Wolfgang Schill- kowski and Gene Johnson of the U.S. Former Oregon State Dar rell Horn finished second to Ralph Boston in the triple jump. Key Held By Liston Philadelphia - IUFD - World heavyweight champion Sonny Liston held the key today to a proposed title bout between him and Cassius Clay here Sept. 30. Is Liston willing to bow out as a co-promoters of the bout with Bob and Jim Nilon? If not, the match appears doomed here. The Pennsylvania athletic commission already has ruled that it cannot grant a license to Intercontinental Promo tions, Inc., because Sonny is head of the firm. A state code bans a license promoter from having an interest in a boxer. CARMICHAEL AWARDED New York -IUPII- John P. Carmichael, sports editor of the Chicago Daily News, will be presented the 1963 Grant land Rice Memorial Award for sports writing by Sportsman ship Brotherhood Inc. at a New York City luncheon. The game will be at 7:30 p.m. and will be for seven innings. North will go against south. Two Central Point teams. the league champ Braves and the Indians along with Jack sonrille and Prospect will be represented on the North squad. Players from Medford Wildcats and Tigers and Phoe nix-Talent will vie for South All-star game rules stipu late that all 16 players of the rival squads get to see action that each team use at least three pitchers and that no pitcher see service more than three innings. North will have four play ers from each of its four teams. South will have at least five players from each of its three teams. A free choice will determine the 16th member of the squad. Girls' swim finals are set for 7 p.m. Boys' swimming prelimi naries will be conducted start ing at 10 a.m. Saturday with finals at 7 p.m. Diving finals for both boys and girls are scheduled for 5 p.m. Satur day. More than 500 boys and girls from 24 clubs in Oregon are scheduled to compete in four divisions. The meet pro gram calls for 34 swimming events and seven diving con tests each among the boys and girls. The triple kill came in the third inning. With the bases loaded, third baseman War ren Cooper caught a line drive. He stepped on his base and fired the ball to David Saxbury at second base. Outcome was decided on the strength of a five-run third inning. The. runs were on a double by Keith Halsey, singles by Rollie Renfro and Randy Aveline, a groundout, two walks and an error. Pat Mooney also had a two bagger for the Indians and Randy Moyer belted a two baser for the Wildcats. The Indians wound up 5-7 in league play and the 'Cats 8-4.
