Si Women's Gresham Lecture Series Continues on Thursday "Commedia dell 'Arte In .Shakespeare" will be the sub ject of the second In the 1983 series of Gresham letcures sponsored by the Institute of Renaissance studies of tne Oregon Shakespearean fes tival. The three-part address scheduled for August 1, 2, "and 3 at 4 p.m., each day, in the Ashland Public library, will be presented by Profes sor Aurel Keating of Yeshiva university in New York. Oliveaus Visit Parents Here ' Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Oliveau and their three daughters, Su zanne, Maidie and Jeanne, of Versailles, France, have been suests for some time of Mrs. Oliveau's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Greene, 2476 Reed lane. The family plans to leave Saturday morning for Santa Monica, Calif., where they will spend about a month and will then return to France by plane. Mr. Oliveau is on the staff of Douglas Aircraft corpora tion. Hera last week end were the Greene's son and daugh ter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. R. r. Greene and their three chil dren, Dick, Jeffrey and De borah, Salem, Ore. , - 3 . v Final Dance , Set For Club Derby - Derby Hoedown era will hold the final dance of the summer season Friday, August 2 in Derby Commu nity hall, eight miles up the Butte Falls highway off Cra ter Lake highway. MID-SUMMER- News Professor Keating will base her lectures on the influence and use of the acting conven tions and characters of Italy in Shakespeare's comedies. On August 1, she will discuss the commedia in Italy and England; on August 2, dis course will be on the three major personages most fre quently introduced in com media - the doctor, the cap tain, and the elderly Panta loon. Final Addrtis The third and final ad dress, on August 3, will be an analysis of commedia ele ments in the plays of this Festival season, "Merry Wives of Windsor," Romeo and Julie t," "Love's Labour's Lost," and "Henry the Fifth." Professor Keating received her bachelor's degree from UCLA, and her master's de gree from the Syracuse uni- versity school of drama. Her academic experience Includes teaching positions at Moravian college, Cortland college, and New York State university. Her directorial work has in cluded several Off-Broadway productions at the Open Door and Bleeker Street theatres. In summer slock she has di rected with the Stanley Woolf players, Grosslnger's Straw hat, and the Mt. Cathalia play house. Dr. Keating has also worked as a scenic designer and lighting designer at the Maiden Bridge Summer the atre. Gresham letcures are pre sented weekly during the fes tival season to benefit the festival collection of rare books and prints. Rebekah Lodge Plans Meeting Plans for their next meet ing to be held Monday, Au gust 9, were made at a meet ing of the Olive Rebekah lodge recently, with Mrs. Le Roy F. Cline, noble grand, in charge. Kenneth Stockhoff will show slides of previous activ ities at the lodge, and the Theto Rho girls will present a skit, as entertainment for the next meeting. Mrs. Eve Prentice Webster entertained with the accor dion, and Miss Judy Stewart sang, Refreshments were served by Mrs. Clarence H. Jordan, Mrs. Sadie Delamater, Mrs. Frank Chapman, and Mrs. James Fleming. Alaska Family Visits in Talent Talent Mr. and Mrs. Harry H. DeJarnett, Pioneer road, have had as visitors Mr. and Mrs. Henry W. Jones and family, Juneau, Alaska. Mrs. Jones is a niece of Mrs. De Jarnett. The youngsters choose a king and queen for each session and "Hank" was chosen king for his session. They were ac companied by their mother, Mrs. L. R. Dressier, who as sisted with the camp program. Alpha Lambda chapter, Epsilon Sigma Alpha interna tional sorority, provided camperships for both boys, This is one of the annual philanthropic projects of many Oregon chapters of the sorority. During the summer months, chapter members are making hand puppets for Rogue Val ley Memorial hospital and garments to be used at the Children's Hosp'tal school in Eugene. The annual Brown and Haley mint sale will be held Sept. 10, 11, and 12th. This is sponsored by the Southern Oregon council chapters as a benefit for the school. Oregon chapters have been giving over $11,000 an nually to the school to assist in educating the handicapped youngsters of our state. A family picnic was held last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Davis Young, 2620 Crater Lake avenue. Games were planned by the social committee, with Mrs. John Gartman as chairman. Family Returns From California Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jew- ett and children, James, Thomas and Anne, recently returned to their home, 903 Winchester avenue, after a vacation trip through Califor nia. In Encinco they were guests of Mrs. Jewett's brother and sister-in-law Dr. and Mrs. Millard M. Doughton. They visited Disneyland, Griffith Observatory and Knott's Ber ry Farm while in southern California. In Santa Barbara the Jew- etts were guests of Mr. Jew ett's cousin, Mrs. John Cotton, Mr. Cotton and their family and in Petaluma they visited Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Robert son, former Medford resi dents. Don Stewarts In Las Vegas Prospect - Mr. and Mrs. Don Stewart, operators of the Prospect store, are on vaca tion in Las Vegas, Nov. Their son apd wife, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stewart, Grants Pass, are visiting in Prospect. Smith, a member of the Britt Music festival orchestra, has played first trumpet with the Portland sym phony orchestra since 1951-52 season, and also is considered a leading exponent of jaij. The trumpet player also has taught in Portland Public schools si-.ice 1955 and is a teacher of applied music for several colleges in the area, including Portland Stale college. Reed college and Portland univer sity. He also is an artist member of the Portland Art Mu seum and has exhibited his paintings there. Mr. Robert Dooms, who has served 23 years in the Navy, is a chief petty officer, at Cecil field, Florida. He and his family have left for their home. Eggplant Slices, Parmesan Cheese Add to Casserole ' Summer living is easy and so is casserole cooking, espe cially when it is done with convenience foods. Even shop ping is simpler when you buy the large size cans that serve four generously and six ade quately. For instance, a 40 ounce can of spaghetti and meat balls is ready to be Just spooned into a casserole for baking. Give it a summer time lifl with eggplant slices, coaled with parmcsan cheese, and browned appealingly before being added. Bake it all to gether fur a simple Mid deli clous family supper dish. A bright green salad. crunchy and cool, and thin crisp bread slicks make fine accompaniments for this dish. The recipe (or spaghetti meat ball-eggplant casserole calls for one medium egg plant; four tablespoons par mcsan cheese; five table spoons cooking oil and one 40-ounce can of spaghetti and meat halls. Set the oven al 373 degrees. Wash eggplant. Cut into about quarter inch slices. Coat eggplant slices with about two tablespoons of the cheese. Heat oil. Lightly brown eggplant slices. Drain on paper toweling. Cut in half Dace spaghetti and meat balls in medium sized baking dish; Place eggplant slices, skin side up, into the spaghet ti and meat balls. Sprinkle top with remaining cheese. Bake 20-25 minutes. Makes four to six servings. To preserve the aroma of a cantaloupe and prevent it from permeating other foods, wash the melon, wrap It tight ly in aluminum foil, transpar ent plastic wrap or several layers of wax paper, and refrigerate. l MT fa , J 7 (W,l Fishing Trip Prospect - Mr .and Mrs. Archie McKiilop and son Kim, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Parrish enjoyed a fishing trip at Coos Bay recently. Mrs. Parrish, now living in Medford, is a daughter of the McKillops. t 1 , 1 Versatile Trumpet Player Music Festival Member Jacksonville James R. Smith, a Britt music festival faculty member, has a varied background as a trumpet player. Hailed as one of the coun try's outstanding trumpet virtuosos, he has been trump et soloist with the Portland symphony for 12 years, has recorded, worked in radio and television and is a leading exponent of jazz. Mr. Smilii ,ulso a teacher of instrumental music in Portland public schools and colleges since 1955, has trav eled with jazz orchestras, been a member of numerous symphony groups and has played Elizabethan music with the Ashland Shakespear ean festival. The musician has played first trumpet with the Ingle wood symphony orchestra, and also in the Los Angeles area has played with the Bur bank, Pasadent, Santa Mon ica and Los Angeles symphon ies.
