L SJ E'fl VJ IV I I II II L r Blow by Blanchard Breaks Deadlock as Yankees Defeat KG By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Sports Writer Okay, all you baseball ex perts, which player Is pnnci. pally responsible for the Yan kees winning this year? Sorry, but no matter who you name, you're dead wrong. And if you Intend to argue about it, better take your case to Ralph Houk, who claims the Yankees are winning ball games not because of any one player but only because of their fine bench. "I'm convinced beyond the slightest possible doubt that we have the best bench In baseball," Houk says. "With out it, we would never have had a chance this year, espec ially with Injuries to such fel lows as Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. "Everytime I look up though, our bench wins another ball game for us." Collins Hurls No-Hit Win for Wheelers Vern Collins pitched a no hitter for John Wheeler Log gers on Monday night, Milan Kurtz followed with a one hitter last night and the Log ger? took over first spot alone In the Major league of the Jackson County Softball as eociation. Complete details on the Tuesday Wheeler Jay Allen fray were lacking but the Log gers reportedly picked up eight hits and were aided by five Alien miscues. Three runs were scored In the first In ning. Tru - Mix won with a single Chicago defeated Washington tally in tnc top or. tne nuun, Houk is referring to such fill-Ins as Johnny Blanchard, Harry Bright, Phil Llnz, Jack Reed and even player -coach Yogi Berra. It was Blanchard's turn Tuesday night. Even though he had been discharged from the hospital only a few hours earlier following a four -day bout with bronchitis, Blan chard took over right field when Maris showed up with a sprained left hand and de livered a tie-breaking single in the eighth inning that helped the Yankees beat the Kansas City A's, 6 to 2. Bouton Won 14ih Jim Bouton recorded his 14th victory against five de feats with a seven-hitter but he was locked In a 2-all tie with loser Moe Drabowsky until Blanchard broke the deadlock. The Yanks then added three more runs In the same frame. Wayne Causey had a homer and two doubles for the losers. The victory kept the Yan kees eight games in front of the second - place Chicago White Sox, who beat the Washington Senators, 5-1.
