Powell May Receive Summons New York - (DPI) - Process servers will be seeking Hep. Adam Clayton Powell (D-N.Y.) starting Sunday with a sum mons requiring him to show cause why he should not be charged with a misdemeanor for allegedly attempting to defraud a creditor. The creditor is Mrs. Esther James, a Harlem widow who won a $211,200 libel Judg ment against Powell after he called her a "bag woman" (Kraft collector) for the police department. Mrs. James has been unable to collect from the Harlem legislator. Tuesday, in Manhattan Criminal Court, she obtained a summons, signed by Judge Simon Silver, requiring Pow ell to show why he should not be charged with defraud ing or hindering creditors by diverting his Income, a viola tion of the penal code. Silver said the summons could be served any time aft er 1 p.m., this Sunday, with the aid of police, if necessary. County Receives Stale License Fee Jackson county has 2,496 more motor vehicles using county roads and highways which recently brought the county $147,41)6 in Its share of state license and tax fees, according to County Treasurer Karl Janouch. The receipts total $1,073 more than the $133,523 re ceived last year, the county treasurer said. Last year the stale collect ed $19,424,587. of which $2,. 930,671 went to the counties, or 10 per cent of the total state receipts. This year the state collected $16,433,734, of which $3,122,490 58 went to the counties. The distribution to counties Is based on the number of vehicles registered in each county. New Delhi - VHi - Indian prohibition laws were broken 15,038 times during the last fiscal year, the National Ex cise department taid today. Kennedy Democrat Defeats Newcomer Bethlehem, Pa. - (UPO -State Sen. Fred B. Rooney, a "Kennedy" Democrat, de feated a political newcomer Tuesday in a special election to fill the seat of the late Rep. Francis E. Walter, (D Pa.). Rooney, 37, claimed in his successful campaign against Republican Robert G. Bart lett, 31, a Sunday school teach er, that Walter was his "po litical godfather." He promised to carry on the work of Walter, who died of leukemia two months ago at the age of 69. Walter, a Democrat, served in the House for 31 years and was chairman of the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Rooney, a Roman Catholic, fashioned his surprising 8, 023 - vote triumph in the Democratic strongholds of Bethlehem and Easton in Northampton county, one of four comprising the 15th Con gressional District. Both can didates are residents of Beth lehem, Rooney as a native and Bartlctt since 1956. OLD SKULL FOUND Morton, England - IUPD - A farmer Tuesday unearthed a skull believed to be 12,000 years old while plowing a field in this Lincolnshire village. Senator Byrd's Wife Stricken Winchester, Va. - (UPD -Mrs. Harry F. Byrd Sr., wife of the senior Virginia senator, suffered a heart attack at her home Tuesday. Mrs. Byrd, 76, had the at tack at her home in nearby Berryville, in ' the heart of Virginia's apple orchard coun try. A family member said late Tuesday she was recovering and that a doctor and nurse were in attendance. Byrd canceled several speaking engagements upon news of hLs wife's illness and left Washington immediately for his home. Tomlin Lectures Scheduled in City Early in August The Fourth Annual John Tomlin Memorial Cancer Lec tures will be held at the Rogue Valley Country club Aug. 16-17, according to Dr. Otto R. Emig, Medford, 1963 Chairman of the Lectures. Invitations to the meeting have been mailed to all Ore gon physicians and surgeons as well as to doctors in the northern California and south ern Washington regions. Established by bequest of the late John R. Tomlin to the Oregon Division of the American Cancer Society, the Lectures are designed to bring to the practicing doctors of the area the latest informa-tio- about cancer diagnosis and treatment. The subject of the 1963 lec tures Is Gynecologic (female reproductive tract) Cancer. Guest speakers include Dr. Donald G. McKay, professor of pathology at Columbia uni versity. New York City, Dr. Edward C. Hill, assistant pro fessor of obstetrics and gyne cology, University of Cali fornia medical school and chief, gynecologic tumor serv ice. University of California hospital in San Fraqcicso; and Dr. Milton D. Hyman, assist ant professor of radiology at the University of Oregon med ical school in Portland. Following an afternoon of scientific talks Friday, Aug. 16, Dr. Howard C. Stearns, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Oregon will give an ad dress to doctors, their wives and American Cancer Society volunteers at a dinner meet ing. The ' scientific session will resume Saturday morn ing. Panel discussions with au dience participation Friday afternoon and Saturday morn ing will be led by Dr. Stearns and by Dr. James M. Whitely, instructor sn obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Oregon and president of the Oregon Division of the So ciety.
