NOW Ale out, PLEA5BT Sma Words Around Us By LYNN M. W ATKINS (Register and Tribune Syndicate. '.963) At First Glance Sheep Appear To Be All Alike With their woolly faces stuck through the gap in the gate they looked as stupid as they are supposed to be. "As alike" their owner said, "as peas in a pod." There were six sheep, look ing dumbly at us, all with a vacant and expressionless look on their faces; six out of a flock of about fifty, owned by the man who stood along side us, looking into those six calm faces. "As alike as peas in a pod" the man had said; we had heard the same expression many times before. Because we had, we once examined Ihe peas in a many pods and sur prisingly enough we discover ed they were never exactly alike. Every pea was a little different from any other pea, even when in the same gr.?en capsule. Pea Never Alike So, peas are never alikp. Why shouldn't sheep be dif ferent from one another? We decided to find out, or at least try. The man gave us permis sion to study his sheep, and laughed when he did. He probably thought, we were as dumb as the animals we wish ed to observe. We caught an even dozen sheep, put them in a small en closure where we could study each one individually at our leisure. We looked them over, and thev looked at us. We peered intently into those sheepish faces. Admittedly, they so closely resembled each other as to be identical. So we broke up the set; we isolated just half the group, six in all, and began again, trying to view the quiet nni mals with an unprejudiced mind. Carefully we compared one with another. We began to notice a difference. No Change of Expression By the end of the week we had to cancel out facial ex pressions as an identifying feature; for we could detect no change of expression re gardless of the conditions ex isting at the time, or any prob lem that momentarily faced them. But there were differ ences. No two sheep walked the same. No two had exactly the same volume, or pitch, to their voices when they baahed. Each had a bodily action peculiarily its own. Each, we found, had an individuality, and a personality with its own mannerisms. Some had hair-trigger tempers, flying angry at the slightest irrita tion, while others refused to become ruffled, even when faced with conditions that should upset them. We later found we could liberate a sheep with which we had established a speak ing acquaintance in the pas ture with a half a hundred others, and later pick it out from all the rest. In spite of the similarity,, each one had a little something different about it. 1 We enlarged the class from the chosen six to 12, and to 20, and we found each was a different individual, each with some distinguishing fea ture, action, or characteristic. Later we talked to a serious minded gentleman who had studied a large flock of do mestic hens instead of sheep, and he too had been surprised to find that each hen was a little different from every other hen. Like sheep, they too are as unlike as "peas in a pod."
