McKinley Is Singles Titlist Chicago - IUPII - Chuck Mc Kinley won his second suc cessive men's singles title at the National Clay Courts championships Sunday by de feating Dennis Ralston in a battle of two young men who hold the key to the United States' Davis Cup fortunes. Both McKinley and Ralston frankly admitted after Mc Kinley's 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 victory at River Forest that the Dav is Cup was foremost in their minds. McKinley, 22, San Antonio, Tex. the Wimbledon champ ion, said he was not going to think about turning pro until after the Forest Hill, Davis Cup and other cham pionships - "and a lot could happen before then," he said. NOTCHES A FIRST Gstaad, Switzerland - IUPII - Nicola Pietrangeli, the tem peramental Italian Davis Cup tennis star, had a first today when he became the initial player from his country to win the men's singles title in the Switzerland champion ships. Till 9 IS 99 Connolly Saves Win For U.S. Moscow - IUPII - American track and field athletes show ered their thanks today on hammer thrower Hal Connol ly for saving a narrow team victory over the Russian men, but many wondered out loud, "who'll save us in the 1964 Olympics?" A 1-2 finish in the the 1,500- meter run by Dyrol Burleson and Tom O'Hara was the high light of five Sunday victories that enabled the Yanks to edge the Soviet men, 119-114. This was the narrowest Amer ican margin of victory in the five meets that have been held between these two lead ing world track and field na tions. Russian women swept the 11 events on the two-day pro gram to rout their United States counterparts, 75-28. From the Soviet standpoint, the most heralded achieve ment was Valery Brumel's world record high jump of 7 feet, 5?i inches. The Russians won six of the final day's 11 men's events but could not overcome the 61-54 advantage the Yanks had piled up in Saturday's competition. Still, the United States might have lost this meet for the first time had it not been for Connolly's unexpected victory in Saturday's ham mer throw. The 32-year-old Connolly, now teaching in Finland with his wife, Olga, had notified U.S. officials that he would be unable to compete against the Russians because of a back injury. He changed his mind at the last minute and came to Moscow for the meet. Had it not been for Con nolly's victory, the U.S. un doubtedly would have lost the men's competition, 117-116.
