Connolly
Saves Win
For U.S.
Moscow - IUPII - American
track and field athletes show
ered their thanks today on
hammer thrower Hal Connol
ly for saving a narrow team
victory over the Russian men,
but many wondered out loud,
"who'll save us in the 1964
Olympics?"
A 1-2 finish in the the 1,500-
meter run by Dyrol Burleson
and Tom O'Hara was the high
light of five Sunday victories
that enabled the Yanks to
edge the Soviet men, 119-114.
This was the narrowest Amer
ican margin of victory in the
five meets that have been
held between these two lead
ing world track and field na
tions.
Russian women swept the
11 events on the two-day pro
gram to rout their United
States counterparts, 75-28.
From the Soviet standpoint,
the most heralded achieve
ment was Valery Brumel's
world record high jump of 7
feet, 5?i inches. The Russians
won six of the final day's 11
men's events but could not
overcome the 61-54 advantage
the Yanks had piled up in
Saturday's competition.
Still, the United States
might have lost this meet for
the first time had it not been
for Connolly's unexpected
victory in Saturday's ham
mer throw.
The 32-year-old Connolly,
now teaching in Finland with
his wife, Olga, had notified
U.S. officials that he would
be unable to compete against
the Russians because of a
back injury. He changed his
mind at the last minute and
came to Moscow for the meet.
Had it not been for Con
nolly's victory, the U.S. un
doubtedly would have lost the
men's competition, 117-116.

Licenses Suspended
Salcm-IUPIJ-Durtng the first
six months of this year the
driver's licenses of 21,198 per
sons were suspended in Ore
gon, the State Department of
Motor Vehicles said today.
Oregon courts reported
more than 123,000 traffic vio
lation convict'ons in the six
months period, a 6 per cent
increase over a year ago.
Mandatory provisions of
the law resulted in 18,652 li-
cense suspensions ranging
from 30 days up to several
years.
Another 2,546 were sus
pended by the department
under its discretionary au
thority.
Included in the mandatory
suspensions were 1,224 li
censes of persons convicted
of drunk driving.
Most of these were 90 sus
pensions as a result of a first
conviction on the charge.
However 189 were involved
in second -time convictions
which brings a year's suspen
sion and 64 were to three
time offenders who are sus
pended for three years.
Failure to comply with the
state's financial responsibility
law was the chief reason for
license suspensions during the
period.
