If you honeymoon in the States, figure an average cost of $447. If you join the surge to the Caribbean, put the tab at $600. If you go to Bermuda, expect to spend more on your hotel than transportation. If you want to stay at the most popular honeymoon spots, choose Miami Beach over Niagara Falls, Majorca over Paris. How much does a honeymoon cost? In deference to your requests, today's column continues my financial guide to the big moments of life. So far, I ve reported how much it costs a bride to tie up her husband lesally and how little it costs a groom to take a wife on the Ereat day. Once the vows are said, though, the husband takes over and his first major expense is the honeymoon There are so many variations on honeymoon expenses that, says the American Express Co., we must invent mythical couple. Okay, you're invented, you're an average groom among the estimated 1.7 million being married this year and you're submitting typical questions. How lone is the average honeymoon and what is the average cost? Eight days, and a recent "Modern Bride" sur vey estimates the cost at $447 for honeymoons within the States, $600 for a visit to the Caribbean Islands. What are costs at the most popular spots today? Here we must ignore countless variationi and operate in round figures. A couple going to Miami Beach for an eight-day honeymoon can expect to spend about $400. If you choose Bermuda, plan on about $675, with transportation talcing $240, hotel $345. If you go to Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands, figure on about $600. If you choose traditional Niagara Falls despite its fall from top place ior honey mooners, estimate the cost at $350 to $400. If your dream is a cruise to Bermuda and Nassau, your seven-eight day holiday should cost $550 to $600. How do honeymooners in the States travel to resorts? The "Modern Bride" survey indicates 77 per cent go by car, about 10 per cent fly, the rest use rail or sea transportation. What about a honeymoon In Europe? In this case, you must have at least two or three weeks to make it worthwhile because of the cost of transportation. For instance, if you want to spend half your honeymoon in Majorca, the rest in London and Paris, your cost of transportation alone win run well over $1,000 unless you get on a charter. The diffi culty with charters is that they usually run a month and rennire at least six months' membership within a group. If you're lucky enough to get on a charter, though, your trans- portation costs would be cut about 40 per cent. Your expenses in Europe are subject to wild variation, dui American ex press suggests an average of $10 to $15 per person per day. What about honeymoon costs in big cities? Again, the costs of honeymooning in such cities as New York, New Or leans, San Francisco, etc., vary immensely, but you, as a typical couple spending eight days in one of these cities, should expect to spend between $400 and $500. You prob ably could cut costs if you use a car to get to your destina tion. Do travel agents have specific tours for honeymooners? None that I can find. They usually recommend the popular spots mentioned above. There are, of course, package tours. What are discernible trends to guide future honeymoon ers? Group fares to Europe and other parts of the world will become increasingly regularised, and as this occurs fares will be cut 40 to 50 per cent. This will permit more and more young Americans to go overseas for their honey moons, but to do this you will have to study carefully the rules for chartered flights and know how ie use the flights tor your purposes. Travel to the Caribbean will continue to grow. This part of the Western Hemisphere has been opening to all ty?ei of tourists on an ever-rising scale since the early 1950's, and honeymooners love it. Low-cost "package" trips by air, rail, bus will be avail able in mounting variety to resort areas and interesting cities from coast to coast. The fly-drive combinatoin deal under which you fly to your destination, then rent a car will spread too. The average duration of the honeymoon of the future will be longer and you'll travel farther and farther from home. JULY 17. 1963 A 7 Washington -OT0- The gov. ernment today opened an in tensified campaign to reduce the balance of payments defi cit by luring dollars away from more attractive invest ment markets outside U.S. borders. It set off a chain reaction of economic forces expected to push up U.S. short-term interest rates slightly to make them more competitive with those of foreign banks. Kennedy To Report The White House has an nounced that on Thursday President Kennedy would give Congress a progress re port on the U.S. balance of payments problem which is a source of growing appre hension both here and abroad Kennedy is not expected to prescribe new, untried medicine. Instead, it is be lieved that he will recom mend adhering to the present policy, only with renewed efforts. The United States ended 1962 with a $2.2 billion bal- ance of payments deficit. This shot up to an estimated an nual rate of $3.3 billion dur ing the first three months of this year. The payments gap - the dif- Millionaires Said Being Produced At Record Clip Washington (UPO The na- tion is producing millionaires at the fastest clip since the get-rich-quick era of the late 1920s. The Internal Revenue Ser vice in its latest tabulation on the subject-reported to day that 398 persons filed returns showing $1 million or more income in 1961. This was the largest num ber since 1929 when the stock market was at the peak of its stratospheric binge. and the total of $1 million taxpayers hit a record 513. Ninety-two new faces were added to this select group in 1961, the biggest increase since 1928 when the number spurted by 221. The IRS statistics show only those who reported earning $1 million or more during the 1961 tax year. Authorities on the distribu tion of U. S. wealth estimate there are a lot more Ameri cans who are worth $1 mil lion today. Some have placed the num ber as high as 100,000. No Names Mentioned Government tax reports, of course, mention no names. But from these studies, it is possible to get a statistical profile of the average $1 mil lion taxpayer in 1961. 1 1 would look something like this: The average top bracket taxpayer had an adjusted gross income of about $2 mil lion. He paid about $800,000 in income taxes. Most likely he was on a payroll, although his income from salaries was a drop in the bucket-to him, anyway. The biggest chunk of his earnings came from profits on the sale of such items as stocks and property. The IRS Millionaires Club accounted for about .8 per cent of all taxes paid in 1961. By contrast, those In the $6,000 to $7,000 bracket paid 4 per cent of all taxes col lected that year.
