The first words of Lord Avon (Anthony Eden) speak ing from London via Telstar II communciations satellite Wednesday morning were, ''Isn't it frightening." He hap pened to be referring to his ruffled shirt front. He could have added, "Isn't it impres-. eive" in referring to CBS News' "Round Table of the World," because the show on whole was impressive. Any technical problems must have been anticipated and solved in adva" pitcures had amazing clarity and excellent sounu, win, for some reason seemed sur prising, considering that the TV signal was relayed from Europe by a satellite speed, ing miles above the earth Switching from London to Denver to Brussels to Bonn was accomplished smoothly and without delay. There were no frantic cries of "Hello, London, Hello, London. Are you there London?" When Lord Avon had something to cay, London was there. The great potential of us ing live television to bring about greater understanding between countries through more effective communication was clearly illustrated. For example, the French attitude toward England, the atomic bomb and NATO was force fully expressed in a spirited exchange between Jean Mon net and Anthony Eden. Read ing similar expressions of opinion cannot make nearly the impression or be as cun . vincing as hearing them. Questions from the audi ence in one country directly to a leader of another coun try is another technique that can help in mutual under standing. When one Lon doner expressed to Presi dent Eisenhower the general European feeling that our country wanted to control theirs, Eisenhower pointed out simply but convincingly how we had helped rebuild Europe to its present power in order to have powefrul partners in the Atlantic community. It was unfortunate that plans for a simultaneous broadcast in Europe had to be abandoned because French authorities withdrew the I ground station at Fleumeur Bodou. The complete "hot switching" which would have permitted European audiences to see the broadcast live de pended on the availability of both the French and English ground stations, one to trans mit the signal from Europe to Telstar II and the other to receive the signal from the United States. No explanation was given for the French ac tion, but it meant that Euro pean audiences could not see the broadcast until tne fol lowing day when tape record ings arrived from New xorK. Even so, this experiment in world communication was highly successful, but just a first step toward realizing the full potential of internation al television. The networks need audience interest ' and encouragement to continue ex perimenting in this direction. If you thought the program worthwhile, write them a let ter. "The Magnificent ROSEMARY TURK Competes in Contest Medford Graduate In Siskiyou Event Rosemary Susan Turk, who graduated from Medford High school in June, was crowned "Miss Happy Camp" and reigned over the July Fourth festivities in the northern California city. Next month she will com pete with other Siskiyou county beauty contest win ners for the title of "Miss Siskiyou" in Yreka. The win ner will go to Sacramento to seek the title of "Maid of California." The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Turk of Happy Camp, Rosemary attended grade school in Happy Camp. She and her sister, Carole, who graduated from Med ford High school -in 1962, moved to Medford with their mother for their high school educations. Mrs. Turk was on the staff of Rogue Valley hospital dur ing their high school years. She resigned from her regu lar position in March but is still on call at the hospital for emergencies. Carole is attending San Francisco Automation Insti tute after completing a course at Hcalds; and Rose mary will enter California State Polytechnic college. San Luis Obispo, Calif., this fall. Portland State Ranks High in Jesting Exam Portland - Portland State college ranks among the top per cent of 582 large col leges and universities taking the nationwide Educational Testing Service examination last spring.
