Tax Ratios Cut In Five Counties ' Salem - HJPD - Reduced prop erty tax ratios in five Oregon counties were ordered Thurs day by the State Tax Commis sion, which acted in its capa city as the State Board of Equalization. In its order, the commission set the following ratios: Crook, 22 per cent; Gilliam, 21 per cent; Morrow, 19 per cent; Sherman, 20 per cent, and Wasco, 21 per cent. All other Oregon counties are assessed at 23 per cent ex cept Multnomah, which is per mitted by law to have a higher ratio. Multnomah posted 33 "i per cent, down from last year's 36 per cent. The ' Tax Commission can substitute its own ratio if it determines a county ratio is more than 10 per cent above or below ratios prepared by the commission. Rats destroy up to 200 mil lion' bushels of grain a year. Hawaii has nine inhabited and1 several uninhabited is lands. The Rev. D. E. Millard of the New Age church at Eagle Point will officiate. Committal will be in Jackson ville cemetery. Mr. Ranney was born July 26, 1910, in Raymond, Wash. He was married in St. Louis, Mo., to Shirley Brandt, who survives. He was a veteran of service with the U.S. Army during World War II. He had been employed for the past five years on the county road crew in Hoopa, Calif. Survivors, besides his wid ow, include a daughter, Mrs. Sharon Starfas, Salinas, Calif.; his mother, Mrs. Alice Ran ney, Phoeniv, Ore.; two sis ters, Mrs. Florence Rowden, Applegate, Ore.; and Mrs. Ha Beery, Medford; one grand daughter, Tamera Starfas; and one niece and one nephew. Casket bearers will include Russ Mitchell, Lee Wells, Bill Bethany, Fred West, Jim Win ningham, and Marion Dunlap. GERALD E. McMAHON Gerald E. ELIZABETH SPANGENBERG The body of Mrs. Elizabeth Spangenberg, 70, of 2335 Ta ble Rock rd., who died Tues day, is being returned by Conger-Morris Funeral directors to Hollywood Hills, Calif., for services and interment. Mrs. Spangenberg was born March 22, 1893, in St. Paul, Minn., and had moved to Med ford just a few days prior to her death. Survivors include three sons, Alfred Spangenberg, Ca noga Park, Calif.'; Russell Spangenberg, Redondo Beach, Calif.; and Kenneth G. Span genberg, Leona Valley, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Emily Lynch, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and Mrs. Charlotte Chapman, Wood land Hills, Calif.; and nine grandchildren. Three Accidents Reported in City Frank Pekala, 57, of 217 South Riverside ave., was slightly injured when the bi cycle he was riding collided with a car about 4:57 p.m. Thursday at East Jackson ana Hawthorne sts., according to Medford police. Driver of the car was Frank William Little Jr.. 56. of 1602 East Jackson st. Police said P'okala did not reciuire first aid. No citations were issued. A par rpcistered to Charles Edward Walker, 1011 West Second St., was damaged about 12:05 p.m. Thursday when it was struck by a ve hicle operated by Karen Don na Peck, 518 Marie st. The Walker car was parked at the time in the parking lot at the Medford Shopping Center. No citations were is sued and no injuries were reported, officers said. Another car was damaged about 10:32 p.m. Thursday while it was parked on Soutn Central ave. between iNinin and 10th sts. The parked car was registered to Floyd Courtright, 401 South Peacn st. The car which struck it was registered to Frances and Robert H. Lichtenstein, uom Hill, according to police re ports. (UPI) Rocket From Plane Hits Observation Bunker; 2 Men Die Hurlburt Field, Fla.-IUPB A low-flying jet fighter fired four non-explosive rockets at a protective bunker here Thursday during war games. One of the rockets crashed through an 18-inch observa tion slit in a million-to-one shot that killed two persons and injured 14 others. The freak accident happen ed during war games by the Tactical Air Command and an immediate investigation was launched to learn whether human or mechanical error caused the accident. No Explosion Exactly how the two men were killed and the others injured was not disclosed by Air Force officials. They said, however, there was no explo sion when the rockets hit the protective bunker, 200 square feet of solid reinforced con crete six feet high.. .The bunk er was used to house person nel judging the pilots' per formances. The plane, an F-100 super sonic jet used to support ground troops, was strafing an isolated area with 50-calibcr machine gun fire when the pilot fired all four of his rock ets at a simulated target. They added that the rockets were "inert," carrying dummy war heads. Vin cent, route 4, box 350H2, Med- No Complaints on Overnight Camp Fee The 50-cent overnight camp ing fco for Emigrant lake and designated areas outside the Howard Prairie developed rec reation area is now being col lected, according to Neil Led ward, Jackson county parks and recreation director. Lcdward said he has not received any complaints about the fee from campers. The county court insisted at the parks and recreation commis sion meeting Monday night that the fee be collected. The parks and recreation director observed nine camp ing groups at the posted areas this week at Howard Prairie. Douglass Allen Witte. 23. of 521 Dakota ave.. was cited for failure to yield the right of way after his car collided with a vehicle operated by Robert Francis Rickman, 45, of 1150 Chestnut St. The impoct of the collision ! spun the Witte vehicle into I a parked car registered to Vilis Lymo Stanley, 209 Wil lamette St., causing it to crash into the rear of another park ed car, which was registered to Thelbert Ross Chcalum, 901 Maple Park dr., officers said.
