    Tax Ratios Cut
In Five Counties
' Salem - HJPD - Reduced prop
erty tax ratios in five Oregon
counties were ordered Thurs
day by the State Tax Commis
sion, which acted in its capa
city as the State Board of
Equalization.
In its order, the commission
set the following ratios:
Crook, 22 per cent; Gilliam,
21 per cent; Morrow, 19 per
cent; Sherman, 20 per cent,
and Wasco, 21 per cent.
All other Oregon counties
are assessed at 23 per cent ex
cept Multnomah, which is per
mitted by law to have a higher
ratio.
Multnomah posted 33 "i per
cent, down from last year's 36
per cent.
The ' Tax Commission can
substitute its own ratio if it
determines a county ratio is
more than 10 per cent above
or below ratios prepared by
the commission.

Rocket From Plane
Hits Observation
Bunker; 2 Men Die
Hurlburt Field, Fla.-IUPB
A low-flying jet fighter fired
four non-explosive rockets at
a protective bunker here
Thursday during war games.
One of the rockets crashed
through an 18-inch observa
tion slit in a million-to-one
shot that killed two persons
and injured 14 others.
The freak accident happen
ed during war games by the
Tactical Air Command and an
immediate investigation was
launched to learn whether
human or mechanical error
caused the accident.
No Explosion
Exactly how the two men
were killed and the others
injured was not disclosed by
Air Force officials. They said,
however, there was no explo
sion when the rockets hit the
protective bunker, 200 square
feet of solid reinforced con
crete six feet high.. .The bunk
er was used to house person
nel judging the pilots' per
formances. The plane, an F-100 super
sonic jet used to support
ground troops, was strafing an
isolated area with 50-calibcr
machine gun fire when the
pilot fired all four of his rock
ets at a simulated target. They
added that the rockets were
"inert," carrying dummy war
heads. The two officers killed were

The 50-cent overnight camp
ing fco for Emigrant lake and
designated areas outside the
Howard Prairie developed rec

Lcdward said he has not
received any complaints about
the fee from campers. The

that the fee be collected.
The parks and recreation
director observed nine camp
ing groups at the posted areas
this week at Howard Prairie.
Willow Point, at the gravel
stockpile, and at the Lily

the only places where camp
fires will be permitted outside
the Howard Prairie develop

tables and fireplaces have
been or are being installed,
Led ward said. i
