(UPI) , Men Spend Week Living in Chamber TAMPttJ mmm ISTAMPlJ Overbrook, Pa.-fllPIWScores of young men from all walks of life have been living in a "chamber of discomfort" here for a week or more at a time In the interest of medical science - and for $10 a day plus room and board. Wearing p radically no clothing, they have been liv ing in near-freezing tempera tures, with their every move ment scrutinized and their every word monitored. The purpose of their volun tary isolation, at Lankenau hospital, is to determine the effects of temperature and moisture on body changes and disease, and of diet under pro longed cold. The test subjects have In cluded artists, gas station at tendants, truck drivers and college students between se mesters. They are recruited through want ads in news papers and accepted -for the test if they pass rigid physical and psychological examina tions. Subjects Harnasstd , Clad only in socks and shorts, the subjects spend as long as 10 days In a precisely . controlled environmental test suite built for Lankenau by Tenney Engineering, Inc., of Union, N.J. Temperature in the main room is kept con stant at 44 degrees but, be cause the subjects are lightly clothed, It's the same as If they were living in an Arctic 40-below with adequate garb, Each subject is harnessed Consideration of Brown's Program Begins To Move Sacramento -HITD- The Call' fornia legislature, after brief halt, began to move again today toward consldcra tion of Gov. Edmund G Brown's tax reform program State Sen. Virgil O'Sulll van (D-Wllllams), author of the pro&ram in the upper chamber, said ha was ready to Introduce the administra fion s bill to establish a state withholding system for per sonal Income taxes Jan. 1 106S. The lawmaker also was pre pared to place before the Sen' ate bills to: Accelerate the gross pre mium Insurance tax and boost the state's revenue by $44 mil Hon during the current fiscal year. Switch from the Insur. ance fund to the state's gen cral fund money from the sur plus line brokers tax. This would bring the state an add! tional $800,000 a year begin' ning next fiscal year. Already introduced were two other parts of the Gover nor i 47 3 million tax re form package - a bill to abol ish installment payments on personal income taxes and one to accelerate the bank and corporation tax. For an unexplained reason, O'Sullivan delayed probably until next week other bills to cancel income tax liability tor 840,000 small taxpayers whose payments would be less than $8, and to decrease : the gift tax exemption. with a maze of wires that sig nal every bodily change. A team of scientists studies and evaluates their physiological and psychological reactions, blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide exhaled, thermal bal ance and metabolic patterns. Blood samples are taken fre quently and a two-way com munication system monitors the subjects' every sound, to gauge their moods. Lankenau's chamber of dis comfort consists of a combin- tion living-dining room about the size of a master bedroom, and an exercise room. In the living room, the subjects lounge on open web cots and chairs, listen to the radio, watch television, read and play chess or checkers. when sleeping, they must lie on cots without mattresses be cause a mattress is a form of insulation. To provide a mini mal amount of warmth for sleeping, a single military type blanket is provided. Twice a day, the subjects take a "walk - on a tread mill in the exercise room. A nurse brings food at regular Intervals - four tightly-con trolled experimental diets. Each subject must consume 11 the food served to him. Rooms Art Screened Ilia rooms, in which the temperature can range from 40 degrees to a scorching 120 degree Fahrenheit, are kept at the noise level of a quiet hospital room. They are screened against electrical in terference, so that the deli cate measuring apparatus will not be disturbed. The experiments have shown that regardless of the differences in diet, a marked deterioration occurs by the fifth day. At that point all shiver almost continuously. their pulse rates rise an aver age of 28 beats a minute and they all suffer some degree of cold injury. In the form of painful extremities. But despite their discom fort, subjects' morale has re mained high throughout. "It was a challenge," said one. and t was anxious to see if I could take it.'
