siPODmifs Medford Speedway Jalopy Races Today More than 40 "jalopies" are to compete this afternoon in auto racing at the Medford speedway in east White City. ' Track officials said yester day that interest is high and they expect a huge turnout. This is the opening race of the season. Many of the cars will be on the track for the first time. The race had originally been scheduled for last Sun day but was postponed be cause of an inclement weather prediction. Yesterday, the weatherman gave the affair the green light for today. Entrants are from valley cities, including Ashland, Tal ent, Central Point, Eagle Point, Prospect, Gold Hill and Medford. Entries are also ex pected from Grants Pass and Yrcka, Calif. Competition should be keen as entrants try to qualify for the 28 car main event. There will be several heat races, a trophy dash, a semi-main and other special events. Win ners in all events will receive trophies and merchandise awards. Spectator gates will open at 11 a.m. Time trials will begin at 1 p.m. followed im mediately by the races. Pit gate will open at 10 a.m. for drivers who wish to practice before the timed runs. Nomina admission will be charged and concessions will be available at the track. The Stars rumbled for nine runs in the fourth inning of the "civil war." Greg Beman swatted three hits, one a two-baser for the Stars. Gerald Branch singled and tripled, Rick Frohreich had two hits and Dave Bailey, Steven Henson and Doug Mil ler doubled. Bob Bailey sin gled and Dave White doubled for the two hits the Rams got off Star pitcher Gerald Branch; Branch fanned three and walked four. Branch's three-bagger, the doubles by Henson and Miller and singles by Bill Bailey and Beman highlighted the big In ning for the Stars. (2 p.m.) Phoenix-Talent Recreation Goes Into 4th Week Phoenix-Talent Phoenix Talent recreation program will enter its fourth week on Mon day, July 8. Almost 200 boys and girls have been attracted to t h e program during the first three weeks. This program is fi nanced as a combined project i of the Phoenix-Talent school j district, Talent Lions club, i Phoenix Lions club and the j city of Talent, i Gene Farthing is director ' of the program. He is assisted ' by Harry Kannasto, tennis coach: Mrs. Stan Dew, girls' Softball, acrobatics and baton, and George Zickefoosc, who helps with the baseball pro gram. Also Included is beginning I swimming. Classes are held in j conjunction with the Medford swim program. Transportation ' for the swimming is provided ! from both Talent and Phoenix I to Medford. It was the third defeat of the day for U.S. boats and left the Yanks without any trophy contenders. Joe and Tom Am long, brothers from Philadel phia, were beaten by Chris Davidge and Stuart MacKen zie in the finals of the Silver Goblets and Rollings college of Florida was eliminated from the Thames Challenge cup in the semi-finals by the Argosies Rowing Club. Dates of other shoots will be announced later. Muzzle-loaders, old and new, some made by members, were fired. In a single game Medford will be at Ashland. Central Point Cheney Studs will op pose the Klamath Hawks at Klamath Falls and the Kla math Falcons meet Tri-City at Merrill in doublcheaders with just the first games counting in the standings. First pitches on all fronts are set for 1:30 p.m. It's top against bottom at Ashland. Medford went into the week end the lone league leader. Ashland holds down the cellar spot. The Studs-Hawks fracas matches a pair of clubs from the middle of the standings with Central Point running fourth and the Klamath club Fords also took a non-league second combat 7 to 0. Coach Cliff McLean has in dicated that Bill Enyart will in fifth spot. Klamath's Falcons will ei ther share the loop lead or be in third place when they op pose the sixth place uems this afternoon. The Falcons and Grants Pass met at Kla math Falls last night. UMMICt 1 1963 B 5 Warning Issued Concerning Use Of Ball Field A warning concerning un scheduled, unsupervised and informal use of the renovated fairgrounds ball park has been issued by Claude Miles, chair man of the county baseball commission.
