Music Is Sparkplug To Summer Pleasure Although the President's opening-day pilch for the Washington Senators usually marks the beginning of the outdoor season, evidence points to self-made music as being summer's real spark plug. Most of the nation's com munity bands and orchestras start spring training weeks be fore ballplayers head south and many community music groups perform for outdoor crowds before the major league seasons open in early April. . Statistically, both music making and baseball are high on the list of America's favo rite pastimes. Egbert points out that the nation s summer music pro grams rely heavily on a musi cal farm system, with roots in the nation's school music program. "The fact that educators consider music to be an im portant part of supervised ed ucation and recreation pro grams in schools," Egbert says, "insures that self-made music and concerts under the stars will remain major na tional pastimes."
