average family can enjoy
boating in a more elaborate
runabout, of fiberglass or ply'
wood construction, at an ex.
penditure of from $500 to
$1,200. The boat, towards the
top end of this bracket, might
be a 19 or 16-footer with up
holstered seats, convertible
top,-and windshield.
For a sturdy 16-footer like
this, a SO-horsepower motor
is ideal. Plenty of power for
speeds of over 35 miles per
hour with a heavy load; water
skiing for three or four at a
time; quiet, dependable oper
ation for family cruising and
fun afloat. In the electric
starting version, with built-in
generator, motors of this size
cost around $800.

Music Is Sparkplug
To Summer Pleasure
Although the President's
opening-day pilch for the
Washington Senators usually
marks the beginning of the
outdoor season, evidence
points to self-made music as
being summer's real spark
plug. Most of the nation's com
munity bands and orchestras
start spring training weeks be
fore ballplayers head south
and many community music
groups perform for outdoor
crowds before the major
league seasons open in early
April.
. Statistically, both music
making and baseball are high
on the list of America's favo
rite pastimes. However, there
are several times more ama
teur musicians (34,000,000)
than baseball players, ;;iore
community bands and orches
tras (1,500) than professional
baseball teams, and more concert-goers
than the combined
1962 attendance for both ma
jor leagues.
According to Marion Eg
bert, educational consultant
for the American Music Con
ference, "Outdoor music-mak
ing has shown significant
gains in recent years, with
noticeable increases in the
number of summer camps -a
350 ner cent gain since 1050
-and in the number of com
munity recreation depart
mcnts adding instrumental
instruction and concerts to
their summer programs."
Egbert points out that the
nation s summer music pro
grams rely heavily on a musi
cal farm system, with roots
in the nation's school music
program.
"The fact that educators
consider music to be an im
portant part of supervised ed
ucation and recreation pro
grams in schools," Egbert
says, "insures that self-made
music and concerts under the
stars will remain major na
tional pastimes."

cludes "is that you don't have
to stop plfying when you
can't hit a fastball."
