MONTHLY PAYMENTS UP Washington - ivrn - The Federal Reserve Board said Wednesday consumer Install ment credit rose $434 million in May, largely due to a $244 million Increase over April In automobile loans. Denton A. C 0 o 1 e y in Houston, Tex as, they show ed me how they are sav ing the lives of a few pa tients with high blood pressure -who Aivares suaaeniy start to have serious trouble due to failure of their kidneys to function well. Ordinarily this kidney fail ure, with the backing-up Into the blood of chemicals which ought to be leaving the body by way of the urine, soon leads to death. Lately, it has been found that in some of these cases, a dangerous flare- up in high blood pressure has come because of a narrowing in the artery that supplies a kidney with blood. This has caused the function of the kid ney to fail. Although these seriously 111 patients are very poor surgi cal risks, Dr. DeBakey and his group have operated on eight of them and have given them great relief. The opera tion lowered the high blood pressure. Today these persons - who in the old days would have been doomed - are back at work. I am writing this to show how medicine keeps moving forward spectacular ly. Treatment For Vitiligo I fed that I should say to the many people who out of their experience have sent me suggestions for the treatment of certain diseases, that al though I am very appreciative of their kindness, I can seldom be enthusiastic about their suggestion, because no physi cian with years of experience can get excited about a drug that has cured one person. Often it is impossible to say why it seemed to work a cure in that one case. Almost al ways when one gives a drug- for a new and accidentally dis covered use - to a dozen peo ple with the disease that it is supposed to cure, they report that it did not help them. Oftentimes, what doubtless happened was that the disease treated by my kindly corres pondent was one of those many which tend to come and go - even when no medicine is given. To illustrate: ever since I was 7, I have suffered from brief spells of painful fibrositis - a disease some thing like arthritis. I have never taken anything for these spells, and so far they have always cleared up by them selves, usually within a few days or weeks. Hence, if man who is suffering from an attack of fibrositis were to take some cortisone, and if he were then to get quick re lief, he would be inclined to give credit to the drug; but I would have my doubts. Today, however, I am not ing here that a woman just wrote me to say that she had vitiligo - with its patches of white skin in which the normal pigment is gone. She took hydrodiuril, a drug she needed to stimulate her kid neys, and the white patches disappeared. On changing from hydrodiuril- to- another kidney stimulant, the patches on her face and neck came back! Again she 'took hydro diuril, and again the patches cleared, I do hope that this woman's experience can be duplicated by the thousands of persons who are now distressed by vitiligo. I hope those who get their doctor to try the medi cine will write to let me know how it worked.
