Klamath Falls Falcons won the second game 6 to 1 over Albany. Another holiday doublebill was slated here this attar noon. Medford was to meet Albany at 1 p.m. and the Fal cons to follow against North Salem. Looney had three hits in four times up for North. He tripled home one run in the first Inning and doubled home Sandy, Don Have Half Of LA Wins By ALEX KAHN Los Angeles - IUPI) - There was little question today that Sandy Koufax and Don Drys- dale were responsioie iur Los Angeles Dodgers riding high in first place in the Na tional league. After Drysdale pitched a 1-0 shutout over the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday night, Koufax followed with a 5-0 blanking against the Cards to increase the Dodgers league lead to a game and a half. For Koufax It was his 13th win of the season and between them he and Drysdale had 23 of the Dodgers 48 victories with the campaign not half over. " Dodgers statistician Allan Roth was kept busy by Kou fax" performance Wednesday night and he noted that the handsome lefthander with his 13-3 record leads the league In numerous departments the most notable of which was leven shutouts. In posting his seventh shut out. Koufax equalled the Dodgers' club record for a full season set In 1918 by Burleigh Grimes and equalled by Whitlow Wyatt in inn. Brian Sternberg Still Critical .Seattle - HOT - Brian Stern berg, 20, holder of the pend ing world pole vault mark of IS feet, 8 inches, was listed as In critical condition here today at University Hospital. Sternberg suffered a dislo cation of the neck vertebrae and spinal cord damage Tues day evening when he fell while working out on a tram poline at the University of Washington. - "The condition of Brian Sternberg Is still listed ' as critical," said the latest state ment from the hospital, "Paralysis and respiratory problems I .111 persist." The blue-eyed Junior of the University of Washington re mains paralyzed from the neck down and has sensory loss from the neck down. Medford hacked the difference to 6 to 4 in the sixth inning then saw a bud ding rally snipped after one run scored in the bottom of the seventh and final inning. Looney's triple was com bincd with two bases on balls and Jeff Lankow's two run three-baser in the first inning. In the fifth Looney's double was preceded by singles by Reg Shires, Bob Chase and Rich Zwackenbush. Medford Scores A Dan Miles' single, a Mike Neathamer walk, a dou ble steal and a Jim Calhoun groundout accounted for a Medford first inning tally. In the sixth panel Calhoun walked and Tom Barker sin gled. They advanced on a passed ball and both were driven home by a Mike Barnes' hit. An error at sec ond base on a blow by Stu Young made it two on base for Medford. Successive walks to Don Anderson and Mi:1" forced over a run. Calhoun drew another free pass in the seventh inning. He scored on a Barker double. Barker was out, however, try ing to stretch his hit to three bases. Barnes flicd out and Ron Edmonds fanned to end the game. Miles and Barker each had two hits for Medford. North Salem pitcher Jim McCandlish walked eight and fanned three In a six-hitter. Bill Enyart, pitching for Medford, whiffed eight and gave up four bases on balls. On Saturday evening tne Medfords go to Roseburg. Annoyed over the many mental mistakes they were making, the Baltimore players decided last Tuesday to mete out fines among themselves for any further lapses. They agreed the average fine would be one dollar, al- Jalopy Race Drivers Exceed 40 More than 40 drivers are slated to race this Sunday, July 7, in the Medford speed way 'Jalopy competition. Races originally were scheduled for last Sunday but rain forced postponement. The program will begin at 1 p.m. Drivers may enter any time after 10 a.m. and use the morning hours for prac tice. Heat races and the main events are billed for 2 p.m. Cars Gulled Most of the jalopies are stock cars that date from the period 1B47-1955. They have been gutted of all glass (except for the windshield), upholstery, trim, seats and other unnecessary items to reduce weight. Doors have been welded shut for extra safety and all drivers will wear safety belts and helmets. -Drivers still may i sign up to race by contacting'Crosby's Mobil Service, 843 West Jack son st., or by writing Med ford speedway, PO Box 1581, Medford. Entries will fight during time trials for the pole posi tion spot of a 30-lap main event. Other races include the semi-main, the trophy dash and the heat races. Grant Pass Girls In National Roller Skats Tournament Tocoma, Wash. - Seventy. seven skaters from Oregon placed first, second or third last week in the Pacific North west Regional Roller Skating championship here. These skaters are now en tcrcd in the American Nation al championships July 27 to Aug. 3 In the Memorial col Iseum at Portland. This is the first time in the history of roller skating that the eight day meet will be In the Pacific Northwest. The championships will In elude 1,500 skaters from the 50 states and Canada, skating from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. in the five branches of free-style dance, figures, speed, and rol ler hockey. Highlights of the meet will lie televised on (ho ABC Wide World of Sports program in August. While most of the 77 skaters are from the Portland area, skaters of the southern Ore gon area placing in the meet were Audrey Davidson and Olenda Eilenberger in speed. The two girls are from Grants Pass. ' though some would range as high as five. The list of vio lations include failure to throw to the relay men, being picked off base and so forth. The idea isn t exactly novel, having been used by other clubs before, but it seems to be working out fine (no pun intended) for the Orioles. Bob Johnson, who has been doing a workmanlike job at second base since taking over for Jerry Adair, singled home two runs during a three-run rally at the expense of loser Dean Chance in the third in ning. That was all Pappas needed although he was nicked for nine hits, includ. ing Albie Pearson's sixth homer in the third. The first place New York Yankees won their sixth straight and widened their league lead to four games Wimbledon Match Won By Moffitt Wimbledon, England (UPD Blllie Jean Moffitt of Long Beach, Calif., reached the women s singles final of the Wimbledon tennis tournament today but Margaret Smith of Australia ruined the prospect of an all-American final by eliminating Darlcne Hard of Los Angeles, 6-3, 6-3. The 19-ycar-old Miss Mof fitt continued her amazing string of upsets by defeating third-seeded Ann H a y d o n Jones of England In the other semifinal, 6-4, 6-4 Miss Smith and unseeded Miss Moffitt meet Saturday for the championship. In last year s Wimbledon tournament Miss Moffitt eliminated Miss Smith in a staggering first round upset. Third Seeded Player The lefl-handed Mrs. Jones, England's top-rnnked player, was the third straight seeded star eliminated by Miss Mof. fitt en route to the final. That would be dazzling Sandy Koufax, who leads the majors with seven shutouts and is the first National league pitcher to pitch that many in one season since War Studs, Ashlanders Opponents Central Point - Central Point Cheney Studs and Ash land American Legion junior baseball aggregations meet Friday in their fourth contest of the season. The game will be at 8 p.m at Memorial field, White City. It will be a counter in the Southern division of Area 4. The Studs have won their three previous battles with the Lithlans by scores of 6 to 1. 16 to 2 and 22 to 4. But the Ashlanders may have shaken off the memory of those setbacks and may be pepped up for the Studs this time. For, the Ashlanders last week end finally broke into the victory column. They won from the Klamath Hawks 4 to 2 and 11 to 0 aft er 10 straight losses. Pitchers Rested As of late yesterday, Cen tral Point Manager Bill Ask- with was undecided about his pitcher. But, he pointed out that his entire mound staff will be rested for the tussle. And he said that he might use two or three pitchers in the game. SF Giant Shakeup Possible By HAL WOOD UPI Sports Writer San Francisco - (UPD - The National League champion San Francisco Giants, play ing win-one, lose-one base ball, face a drastic shake-up before the current home stand is finished unless they win more games, manager Al vin Dark indicated today. The Giants squandered four home runs Wednesday in tak ing a 6-5 whipping from Milwaukee and wrangle with the Braves again in the finale of the scries today. It was to be Jack Fisher (3-7) on the mound for San Francisco against Tony Clon ingcr (4-4) for Milwaukee. A sullen Dark had little to say after Wednesday's defeat a game in which the Giants frittered away a four-run lead when the Braves broke a 26- inning scoring drought by counting six times in the sixth. "There's one thing for sure," said Dark. "A man can't hit .200 and play major league baseball." Dark was referring to Jose Pagan, generally regarded as the finest fielding shortstop in the National league. "So I'm going to try out Ernie Bowman there for a while. And don't be surprised if any Giant should show up playing any position. There s one thing definite. however. Harvey Kuenn and Willie McCovey are going to stay in the lineup. If it weren't for them we'd be in a bad shape." This means that cither third baseman Jimmy Daven port or first baseman Orlan do Ccpeda could be relegated to the bench - because Kuenn and McCovey usually alter nate in left field. But, with Davenport Injur ed, Kuenn has been playing third and McCovey plays reg ularly in left. Ccpeda is In a big slump and could be sent to the bench for a while. Television Rights Made For Title Bout New York - WPD - Sporta vision Inc., which owns the ancillary rights to the Sonny Liston-Floyd Patterson heavy weight title bout, has made arrangements with the British Broadcas ting Corporation (BBC) for same-day'' tele casting of the fight. The bout will be held on July 22, which is early morn ing of July 23 in Britain. A kinescope of the bout will be flown from Las Vegas to Britain via the polar route immediately after the fight. Brookings will be 6:30 p.m. guest of Ashland on Saturday. Sunday afternoon play in the division will have the Studs against the" Hawks at Klamath Falls and Med ford at Ashland. Tonn Leads Major Loop In Batting Harvey Tonn, Central Point Merchants, was the batting leader in games through June 26 of the Major league of the Jackson County Softball association. He had an average of .444, according to statistics from Association President Harry Chipman. Leadership was based on a minimum of 18 times at bat. Second in the race was Tom Perdue, Jay Allen Cars, with .414. Following with .412 were Vern Parent, Central Point, and Fuz McCay, John Wheeler Logging. Team batting leader was John Wheeler Logging with' 312 for 12 games. Jay Allen Cars was right behind with 310. The statistics involve the full season. The associa tion was not divided into Ma jor and Minor loops until the second half of play. Milan Kurtz of Wheelers with 7-0 and Willard Bar- num of Jay Allen with 6-0 paced the pitching. Golf Lesson Enrollment On Monday Monday, July 8, is registrar i tion day for the golf lessons being offered for the first tima as part of the Medford city : summer recreation program. , : Registration hours are 8 to 11 a.m. at Cherry Lane Park course.
