. Downing, See No-Hitter Bids Spoiled in AL Tilts By MILTON RICHMAN un sports Writer off Paul Foytack, who sufier Al Downing and Dave ed his second defeat, against Morehead can console each one victory. Dick Hall, second other today over coming so near, yet so far, in their bids lor no-hitters. Downing, the 22-year-old New York Yankees' south paw, held the Chicago White Sox hitless for 6 23 innings Tuesday night but had to set tle for a one-hit 3-0 victory. And Morehead, a 19-year-old rookie right-hander for the Boston Red Sox, had a no hitter going until the eighth against the Cleveland Indians only to wind up with a two hit 6-1 triumph. "I would have liked to pitch a no-hitter," said Down ing, "but I am not complain ing a bit. Winning the game was more important." t Morehead was equally philo sophical. "I did my best," he said, "and I'll take a two-hitter any day of the week." Downing's victory was his third and the Yankees' fifth in a row, stretching their American league lead to three games. The Yankee left-hand-t-r, who had held the Red Sox hitless for 6 13 innings in his previous start last Friday night, had visions of a "no- no" - as the ballplayers call it - Tuesday night until Ca milo Carreon rapped a sharp single off his glove with two out in the seventh, There wasn't the least bit of doubt about Carreon's hit, which skipped over second base and rolled into center field. But that was the only one of 134 pitches by Down ing which was hit safely. He struck out 10 batters, walked six and got the only run he needed when Tony Kubek singled home Hector Lopez in the third inning. Lo pez then hit a two-run homer in the fifth. The Yanks' run in the third was their first off loser Ray Berbert (8-5) in 20 consecutive innings. Morehead, whose record now is 5-5, pitched perfect ball until he walked Willie Kirkland with two out in the seventh. He lost his no-hitter when Fred Whitfield led off the eighth with a grounder that took a freak bounce over second baseman Chuck Schil ling's head for a single. There was nothing freak ish, however, about John Ro mano's pinch homer in the ninth. Romano had been re stored to the active list just before the game. The Red Sox scored two runs off loser Bar ry Latman (5-4) in the second inning and Lou Clinton's hom er featured a four-run out burst in the sixth. The Minnesota Twins reel ed off their eighth straight victory and took over second place with a 7-4 triumph over the Detroit Tigers, the Balti more Orioles out-lasted the Los Angeles Angeles, 4-3, and the Washington Senators downed the Kansas City A's, 7-2. Bob Allison's two-run hom er and Jimmie Hall's three run wallop offset homers by Al Kaline and Bill Bruton in Minnesota's victory over Detroit. Allison's 20th homer in the third put the Twins ahead, 4-1, and kayoed loser Bill Faul, while Hall's eighth homer came off reliever Tom Sturdivant in the sixth and put the game out of the Tigers' reach. Dick Stigman struck out nine and scattered eight hits before Bill Dailey came on in the ninth to nail down Stigman's seventh victory. Bob Johnson's single and Al Smith's double were the key blows for the Orioles in a two-run seventh-inning rally that took care of the Angels.
