MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORO. OREGON FRIDAY. JUNE 21. 19C3 Dennis the Menace But you shouldn't set wo just eecAuse Kenny" said that. lWf lanky j Try and Stop Me -By BENNETT CERF- Feeding the Family By ZOLA VINCENT Food editor "TT'S OBVIOUS that that old skinflint isn't going to pay A anv attention to the bills I sent him," Dentist Pullman "I'm going up to his apartment told his wife one evening. and collect in person." An hour later he was back, looking very glum. "I can see by your face he didn't pay you," said his wife. "He not only didn't pay me," conceded Dr. Pujlman ruefully, "but he bit me with my own teeth." One lecturer I know has devised a soul-satisfying answer to boring ladies who clutch at him as he is re treatin? from the podium to ask, "I'll bet you don't remember where we met before." He gazes soulfully at the questioner and says, "Madam, if I remem bered a beautiful lady like you, how could I get any work done?" Mayor LaGuardia of New York once gave a reception for Thomas Mann, the famous German author, who wrote "The Magic Mountain." "New York," His Honor told Mann, "is divided into two parts: those who have read your wonderful books and those who only say they have." LaGuardia then added, "I refuse to Btrte publicly to which group I belong." C 19S3. by Bennett Cert. Police said the killings cli maxed a long-standing feud between the suspect, Nicholas Ukraine, and Robert Reidy, 45, one of the victims. Reidy, his wife, May, and their son, Mark, were slain in the parlor of their home. V Authorities quoted Ukraine as saying that Reidy, a neigh bor, "harrassed" him. Reidy and his wife, a nurse, and Mark were pronounced dead on arrival at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Police said the Reidvs were killed by three bullets from a 38-caliber revolver. Franks Are Star-Spangled Fare Throughout Summer The versatile frankfurter needs no recommendations from us; will be on a major portion of shopping lists each week. We suggest this very good main dish knowing full well that most of them will be simmered, grilled or broil ed and served with any of many relishes and tucked into buttered or mayonnaised hot hotdog buns. Few things are more disappointing than a hot dog in a cold bun. Frankly Quick. This delec table dish can be brought to the table in the skillet along with a crusty bread and a tart relish. For four persons, six frankfurts. Slice three medi um tomatoes one-half inch thick into skillet. Top with thin slices of one onion and strips of green pepper. Slice six franks in half, first length wise, then slanchewise and place on the vegetables. Cover and cook slowly about 15 minutes. Sprinkle one cup shredded cheese over; add salt and pepper, then cover. Turn off heat; cheese will melt. Family and friends will like. For a crowd, consider making several batches. Put in extra sup plies of paper plates, cups, towels, napkins. Bring Your Own. Many i younger generation couples ask "playmates" to bring their own steaks, chops, , broiler-chicken halves or oth er personal choice for indi vidual preparation and cook ing over glowing coals. Host ess supplies other food and soft drinks. Do It Beforehand. Butter rolls at home to save bother at picnic. Wrap green onions, radishes, carrot strips, celery sticks and olh.-r relishes first In dampened paper towels, then In waxed paper or trans parent wrap to keep them crisp. Watkint tauter a Tribune Syndicate, liti; Agenda Prepared For Meeting of JFK, Macmillan London - IUPII - U.S. Secre tary of State Dean Rusk and top British officials, alert for possible surprises irom oo viet Premier Nikita S. Khru shchev, today worked on an agenda for the weeK ena "summit" meeting between President Kennedy and Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. Rusk planned to meet For eign Secretary Lord Home for a "working lunch at ine ibi ter's private residence. Later both men scheduled discus sions with other ministers and top officials. McGeorge Bundy, the Pres ident's assistant for security affairs, planned to fly in from Paris to participate in preparations for Kennedy's 23 - hour visit with Macmillan at Birch Grove. Kennedy will arrive from Ireland on Sat urday. Bundy conferred with French Foreign Minister Mau rice Couve de Murville and leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Paris Thursday. Diplomatic sources here said the coming meeting will center on next month's nu clear test ban talks in Mos cow, Kennedy's proposals for a mixed - crew Polaris sur face force under NATO, the alliance itself and East-West relations in general. Speculation that Khrush chev might have "something up his sleeve" stemmed from the sudden announcement of his trip to East Berlin. The visit will coincide with the Kennedy Macmillan meeting here. Goldfinch Sings and Suns While Other Birds Work With the advent of spring, 1 most bird couples are busy building nests, laying eggs ; and, a little later, feeding and i training their young. The idea is to get family raising out of the way before the heat of summer becomes too opprcs-1 sive, making nesting very un comfortable. Besides, the bird that is hatched early is strong er, more fully developed and ready to migrate when the fall comes. During these times of fever ish activity, another bird spe cies, one of the tamest and most cheerful as well as the most colorful, is merely glori fying the landscape with its beauty and its twittering song, making no preparation at all in the nest building line. Goldfinch Acts Slow Other birds may nest early but the goldfinch acts as if he had all the time in the world. These sociable birds, traveling over the fields and city lawns in small groups, figure that if they get the nest started in July it will be time enough; some may even wait until August. There have been in stances where a goldfinch pair would wait until Septem ber. Some may even be teach ing the newly hatched the technique of flying as late as October. The reason for this late start in nest building and fam ily raising has never been fully explained by students of bird behavior, unless it is timed to coincide with late flowering plants that will fur nish edible seeds for the young. The goldfinch family may even decide to remain in the north all winter long. The sight of these colorful birds against a snow covered field or backyard is a warming sight for people weary of an otherwise colorless and mo tionless winter landscape. Bright Lemon Yellow The spring plumage of the male goldfinch is a bright, lemon yellow, with black wings and tall feathers. Pre dominantly yellow, it is little wonder that it is often called "wild canary." Being common In most of its range it has re ceived a great many common names such as thistlebird, probably because of its pref erence for tntstiedown lor lin ing the nest; beet-bird, or let tuce bird, because of its pres ence in gardens. It is called "shiner" in some areas as well as "salad bird" or "catnip bird." The goldfinch has a fond ness for dandelion seeds, and being as yellow as the blos soms themselves, has become associated with this weed In people's minds, and therefore known as "dandelion bird. Whatever it is called, the gold finch is economically benefi cial, for weed seeds form the bulk of its diet, along with insects. Twitter in Flight The colorful goldfinch sings while he feeds, a soft, musical twittering song somewhat like that of the canary. When they take wing they forget to stop singing and twitter away while in flight. The flight is unusual, a peculiar series of undulations, somewhat similar to a gallop. The American goldfinch occupies a large sec tion of the eastern U. S. while the western goldfinch Is com mon from the Rocky Moun tains westward. Mr. and Mrs. Goldfinch are not averse to using an aban doned blackbird nest as a nursery for their own young. They refurnish the nest with some bark strips and line the Inside with soft thistledown. Mrs. Goldfinch is less color ful than her husband; he's the flashy one.
