10 A THURSDAY. JUNE 27. 1963 HLUrunu mtiiLi ttwpwnm : ; ; i 1 f n II French Guessing On Successor To Charles De Gaulle By JOSEPH W. GRIGG ; Unittd Pres. International Parts OlPIt President Charles De Gaulle hai French men guessing furiously about his successor. But he has done nothing to answer the questions his fellow countrymen are ask ing. - Will De Gaulle run for a second term? - If he doesn't, whom will he endorse? De Gaulle touched off Pres idential speculation by tossing the problem of his successor Into his speeches during his meet-the-pcople tour of South western France. Almost casually, he remind ed his audiences that he would not be around for ever. He made it clear he hopes his successor will be a man pledged to carry on the work of his "strong man" Fifth Republic. But De Gaulle never drops casual remarks without sig nificance. When he started the nation al guessing game, he did so quite deliberately. Plans To Quit One theory put forward by the French press was that he plans to quit ahead of time and lo ensure that a loyal Gaulllst is Installed as Pres ident while he is still around to advise from behind the scenes. . - A more likely theory seems to be that De Gaulle simply is launching a long term campaign to convinco the na tion's voters that his succes sor should be the man with his endorsement rather than a hold over politician from the Fourth Republic. De Gaulle's seven - year term ends in January, 1066. His successor will be elected by direct popular vote of the whole nation in December, 1D65. i Thus, It may be some time before De Gaulle pinpoints his own choice publicly. But there seems little doubt the General will continue telling French voters that . they "never had It so good" and that It Is to their advan tage to see that the Fifth Re public continues ailcr he steps down, Pompidou Favored . It la - generally assumed though Do Gaulle never has said anything in public to confirm this, that his current Choice is Pompidou, the 51 year old House of Rothschild banker who has headed the government since April last year. The name of Henri Count of Paris, 84-ycar- old pretender to the French throne, also has been mentioned recently. But there is nothing to indicate he is a serious candidate. The leftists and the old-line middle of the road parties almost certainly will put up candidates too. But, on present form and barring some major political upset, the man with De Gaul le's personal backing will be a tough man to beat. Sweden Stunned By Spy Disclosure Stockholm - (IPIl - Sweden was stunned today by the dis closure of the most serious espionage case In its history. Some newspapers demand ed a complete overhaul of the nation's security system fol lowing charges which involv ed a retired air force colonel alleged to have spied for the Soviet Union for 15 years. Other newspapers attacked Russia for carrying out espio nage in Sweden. A Foreign Ministry spokes man said Tuesday thai Col. Erik Wenncrstrorm, 58, a trusted and respected former air force officer and one time attache in Washington, had confessed to selling Amcrk'gn and Swedish defense secrets to the Communists. Sweden traditionally is neutral, but it has close ties to Norway, Denmark, the United States and other mem bers of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
