Olten, from whut they go on to say, 1 Imaglno that they have what people call "an acid Aivatx aiomacn,- out even then I 'cannot be sure what they have. If I saw the person, I would ask him to show mo where his burning sensation was. If he put his hand on his stomach- above hia navel, and left it there, I would know his burn ing was of nervous origin, and in his skin. If he moved his hand up toward his throat, I would know he had heart burn. All good stomachs arc very acid inside, but the normal person cannot feel any dis tress because the few nerves in his stomach wall do not sense the acidity. He probably can sense the acid only when it regurgitates, or runs up into his gullet. But even then, for some reason, the lining of the gullet must have become irri table - as after the man's eat ing certain foods, or drinking certain drinks, or smoking cer tain tobaccos, or "blowing his top." Often, only a person who has a hereditary tenden cy to get heartburn will ever get an attack of it. It runs in certain families. Once I questioned at length, 140 persons with heartburn and they told me the best treatment consisted of putting some sodium bicarbonate into a third of a glassful of water and slowly drinking that. When it washed down and also neutralised the acid trie juice in the gullet, the person felt comfortable again. Some stomachs are too acid when the person has an active duodenal ulcer, but then this sensation is not a burning; It Is a hunger pain, which comes when he is hungry and is re lieved when he cats. A biologic chemist would (ell my correspondent that his blood can never be acid; if it were ever to become acid, he would quickly die. There is, however, a condition called acidosis, in which the amount of alkali in the blood is re duced - as it la in dangerous crises in the course of a se vere diabetes. Death In Rtfrigarators How I wish people who put aside an outworn refrigerator would remember that last year 33 children crawled into old refrigerators, flammed the door on themselves, and then suffocated and died. Three out of four of the victims were from three to six years old. Obviously, no one should ever put away an old refrig erator without removing the door, or locking it shut in some way, perhaps with a padlock, or fixing the door In such a way that it can never be shut so aa to bo air-tight. Whan rtsharman Hooks Sell Every so often a fisherman manages to drive a fish-hook ly Into his skin or the skin of his companion. Then the problem Is, how to get the hook out. With the barb tear ing the issues, any attempt to ' pull the houk backward will be very painful. Usually, the beat and easiest thing to do Is quickly to push the hook through In such a way that the sharp point comes out. Then, if a strong wire clipper Is available, the sharp end of the hook, with the barb, is cut off, and after this, the hook can easily be withdrawn. I remember one day I was walking through the high mountains of California-I met a fisherman who was in great pain because he had run a fish hook into the flesh just below his chin. He and his companion had tried to pull the thing out, but he just could not stand the pain. When I came along, I just gave the hook a push and in stantly the point emerged on his chin. Very fortunately, I happened to have a puir of cutting pliers in my knap sack, and so, in a few seconds I had snipped off the barb. Then I pulled the hook back, and it came out easily. Dear Ktmtnyt If I see someone cheating on a test and he is a friend of mine, should I iell on him? Mixed Up Dear Mixed Up: What true friend you must be, caring enough about this friend to wonder what Is real ly right. This is a very touchy subject. Remember that he Is cheat ing only himself, not the per son he is copying from, if that is the case. I would say -to say something to the teach er, but DON'T say anything about It to the rest of the stu dents. ' If you don't stop him NOW, how far is he going to go the next time?? Dear Kimmyt My teen age son Is very quiet. He never likes to go to parties or out with other boys. Should I coax him to gat out more or will he become more socialable as he grows older? He Is 14. Trank you Kim. Jean Dear Jean: You said your boy wag 14 and 14 is a very Independent age; whether It be a boy or girl. If It is Just the problem of not wanting to go to parties and dances, I wouldn t push him too far. Many boys al 14 aren't prepared for this type of thing. The social relationships of young adults are more Impor tant to them than anything else. The big question he may be wondering, "'What do others think of mo?" Teen-agers may turn to peo ple outside of the home (an older teen-ager or a teacher) for the 'approval and praise they received as children, bul still need, oven though they want to show their independence. I really don't think vou have anything to worry about. He's just growing up! Dear Kimmy: My dad is always saying, "Whan I was your age - f Why do parents say this? Wondering Dear' Wondering: Hardly ny offspring goes through his life time at home without his parents describing or re calling many things about his childhood or how "things" were "When 1 was growing up." Your parents are more or less revealing to you what the conditions of your problem were about 15 years ago. Put up with It and remember that someday you'll be able to say ' Well son, when I was your age - l l " Dear Kimmyt How can I get my daughter to stop hagging me for a telephone tn her bedroom? A Haggard Dad Dear Haggard Dad: Buy her a telephone and I'm sure she'll stop hagging you. Dear Kimmy: I want lo break up with this boy and I am wondering if I should do it or have a friend tell him? Undecided Dear Undecided: You do It. You're the ono that wants to break up with him, not your iriend. tic will think a lot more of you, loo, if you tell him yourself. He may not admire you for awhile, but someday he will.
