Whereabouts of Nilcita Khrushchev Basis for Rumors WEEK END TRIP PLANNED Washington -IUPD- Mrs. Jac queline Kennedy and her two children were scheduled to leave Thursday for Newport, R.I., where they will spend a long week end at her mother's estate, Hammersmith Farm. Elec. Jackhammers ; For RENT At A to Z Rental 1213 N. Riverside 779-1474 Moscow -fllPD- The big ques tion making the rounds in Moscow's diplomatic circles today was "where is the wan derlng Nlklta Khrushchev?" In the wake of unconfirmed and undenied rumors the So viet leader had paid a sur prise visit to Bucharest. The apparent mystery deep ened Tuesday night when re liable sources reported that he had left Moscow for an undisclosed destination. Rumors Spread The rumors spread rapidly Tuesday among foreigners but not among Russians at the Kremlin Palace of Con gresses here the Interna tional Women's Congress was being held. Such rumors often origi nate with one person but promptly become the common domain of foreign reporters and diplomats. Sometimes they turn out to be founded on fact but more often they are not. There Is no foolproof way of check ing. The press office of the For eign Ministry seldom provides any Illuminating information and confines Itself to what has become a classic formula - "we know nothing." The formula may be liter ally true since except for rare occasions of diplomatic recep tions when reporters can ap proach a high Soviet leader, their normal access is only to lower ranking officials of the press department. Plausible Version A more plausible version circulated today in foreign circles, mainly that Khru shchev left by train for East Berlin where he Is scheduled to arrive Friday to participate in celebrations of Walter Ul bricht's 70th birthday. Ac cording to this account, the two and a half day trip by train to Berlin would give Khrushchev time to stop over somewhere en route, probably in Poland for talks with War saw leaders. President Ken nedy visited West Berlin to day. WARS ON PIGEONS Nice, France-IUPU-In an ef fort to cut down the pigeon population, Nice Issued a de cree Tuesday forbidding citi zens to leave crumbs or grain on balconies, window ledges, beaches, garden or court yards. A Boon To Telephones Turn of Handle Connects Caller; System Better Than All Numbers 14:. J Br DICK WEST Washington -dTb-As a red blooded, 100 per cent, multi- digit Arabic number tip my hat 7V'sth) to P r o s s T, Cross, presi- dent of the Lathrop, Mo. telephone company. Ac cording to press reports, Cross is re- ' sisting , pres sure from the state public service commission to con vert the phones in Lathrop to the dial system, I'm with him all the way. The . telephone service maintained by Cross's com pany is the exact antithesis of the all -digit dialing sys tem that the somewhat larger American Telephone & Tele graph CO. is forcing upon its subscribers. In Lathrop, you don't have to use a number at all. You can just turn the handle, tell the operator who you're call ing and she'll connect you Wonderful! Why hadn t someone thought of that before? Now that Cross has shown the way, lei us hop that AT&T will abandon its program of discarding tele phone exchange namss and adopt lht Lathrop system instead. While they're at it, I'd like to see AT&T install a system like the one we used to have in my home town in Texas. If you didn't get an answer. the operator would inform you that the party you were calling had gone to the store Eagle Point Girl Princess Runner-Up Portland -IUPII- Linda Olsen, dimpled, brown-haired girl from Coos Bay, was chosen Oregon Dairy Princess Tuesday. Miss Olsen, daughter of Mr. nd Mrs. S. C. Olsen, Coos Bay, was picked by a panel of five judges at the Sher aton Motor Hotel over 18 other contestants. The contest is sponsored by the Oregon Dairy Products Commission. First runner-up was Geor gia Rca Hubbard, of Eagle Point, representing Jackson and Josephine counties. sm mm o f . t J c ( 1 II Once you ha?e the key to a Plymouth, you'll be a lifelong member I No waiting list-come in for a test drive! I got quite a shock a few nights ago, however, when I tried to call my father. Ever since Hector was a pup, my father's phone number has been 38. But on this occasion, when the Washington operator fi nally reached the operator in my home town , apparently making connection by way of Telstar II, the operator there said the number had been changed. She said my father's new number was 9285015. From 38 to 9285015. What is the world coming to? Well, for on thing, it's coming to "Zip Codes." Be ginning July 1, Postmaster General J. Edward Day would like us all to start putting five-digit Zip Codes oa the letters we mail. As far as I'm concerned. Day can go butt a stump. I'm all in favor of improv ing the postal service, but I haven't got room in my head for another single number. The saturation point was reached a few months ago when my bank made me start putting 87-80-083 on my checks and deposit slips. Last week, the savings in stitution that mother-hens my nest egg sent me a form to fill out so it could designate me as 458-05-8881. I haven't been able to come up to that either. We need strong men like Pross Cross of Lathrop, Mo., to rescue us from the numeri cal morass into which we are sinking. Down with dialing! Union Accused Of Luring Girls Washington-4!FU-A Senate subcommittee has charged that a U.S. entertainers' un ion helped lure Canadian girls to the United States for striptease jobs in "vicious dives" where they were held under 24-hour guard and forced into prostitution. The Senate investigation subcommittee, in a report Tuesday on its 1962 probe of the American Guild of Vari ety Artists, said the U. S. Immigration and Naturaliza tion Service tightened its rules last year to thwart the racket. The subcommittee said the Paramount Entertainment Bu reau of Montreal, a booking agency franchised by the AGVA, had signed up a num ber of girls in 1957 for work under "shocking and unbe lievable" conditions in U.S. j strip clubs.
