It's a wonderful theory for those who hope this will be one of those rare years in which the Yankees do not win the American league pennant but it's being drowned out by the thunder of Maris" bat. The Yankees have reeled off five straight victories and it's no coincidence that Maris has walloped away at a .500 clip during those five games. The 9-for-I8 spludge has lift ed his season average to .289 and he's connected for 11 homers and driven in 21 runs. Maris made it easy for Whitey Ford to post his ninth win of the season Tuesday night when he hit two homers and a single in the Yankee's 10-5 triumph over the Wash ington Senators. Tom Tresh and Tony Kubek also homer ed and Hector Lopez had a triple as the Yankees moved a full game ahead of the Chi cago White Sox, who lost to the Minnesota Twins, 3-3. The Cleveland Indians de feated the Baltimore Orioles, 7-3, the Boston Red Sox rout ed the Detroit Tigers, 9-0, and the Los Angeles Angels scor ed an 11-inning, 2-1 victory Kirsch Nominated For Coach of Year Omaha, Neb. -WPD- Univer sity of Oregon's Don Kirsch was one of nine coaches nomi nated Monday for the College Baseball Coach of the Year Award. Also included among the nominees was Rod Dedcaux of NCAA champion Southern California. The award will be present ed at the annual convention of the American Association of College Baseball Coaches in New York Jan. 5. over the Kansas City Ath letics in other AL games. Harmon Killebrew's 11th homer of the season helped the Twins drop the White Sox a full game behind the Yan kees. Jim Perry pitched eight hit ball for seven innings and Bill Dailey closed it out with two strong relief innings. Joel Horlen suffered his second defeat against four wins for the White Sox. Barry Latman pitched a five-hitter and contributed to a two-run double to an attack that carried the Indians to their sixth straight victory and their 16th in the last 18 games. Latman struck out 10 en route to his third win. Wil lie Kirkland homered for the Indians and Jim Gentile con nected for the Orioles. The Red Sox spoiled Charlie Dressen debut as manager of the Tigers as Earl Wilson pitched a four-hitter and homers by Eddie Bres- soud and Dick Stuart paced Boston's late-inning attack. It was the eighth straight loss for the Tigers, playing their first game under Dressen after Bob Scheffing was fired. A wild pitch with the bases filled by John Wayatt en abled the Angels to score the winning run against the Ath letics in the 11th inning.
