IMS Hertford, CP Stud Junior Legion Clubs Travel for Tilts Medford and Central Point American Legion Junior base ball teams travel for Area 4 Southern division engage ments today. Medford goes to Grants Pass and CP's Cheney Studs to Merrill to take on Trl-City. Medford carries the banner of unbeaten league leader with a 2-0 mark. The Studs are in second place with 3-1. Grants Pass, as of Friday, shared third place with the Klamath Falls Hawks and Falcon teams with a 2-1 stand ing. Last night the Hawks met the Falcons. Tri-City is 1-2 in the loop and Ashland 0-3. Bill Enyart is the likely Medford pitching choice and he may face Jack Thompson. Larry Pepper 'could get the call for the counting game for Central Point against Tri-City with Dennis Barry and Brad Slezak among pitching possi bilities for the host Gems. Central Point will be guest of Ashland in a 7:30 p.m. non league game at the fairgrounds on Monday ana Medford will entertain Grants Pass at the same park at 8 p.m. on Tues day. League games this week include Medford versus the Cheney Studs at White City and Ashland at Klamath Falls Falcons on Wednesday eve ning and Grants Pass at Klam ath Falls Hawks on Saturday. It could have been all over Friday night. But Southern Cal's Trojans would have none of that. The Trojans carried one de feat with them when they met Arizona Friday night in the first half of the championship finals of the NCAA's double elimination tournament. They capitalized on a first-inning lapse for five runs and went on to a 6-4 victory which set up Saturday's decisive game. It was the first loss for the Wildcats in the tourney. r z: Uhle Assumes Lead In Royal Oaks Golf Vancouver, Wash. (UPD Dr, Alvin Uhle of Portland fired a two-under-par 70 Friday to take a two-stroke lead in the championship division of the 54-hole Royal Oaks invitation al golf tournament. . ; Uhle. seeking to end Port- lander Don Krieger's three- year reign as champion in the division, shot 35-35. Tied for second places with 72s were Mike Montag of Van couver, Jack Sias of Portland and Hal Jacobson of Long- view, Wash. Kricger and four other Dlayers shot 73s. Defending champion Bob Bronson of Portland shot 70 to capture the lead in the junior-senior division and roa die RaDD of Vancouver col lected a 73 to grab the lead in the seniors' division. The tournament ends today. Reeve finished second in the thre-mile run and Dave Steen led all qualifiers in tne shot put here Friday for Universi ty of Oregon in the NCAA track championships. Reeve, who has been a big disappointment this season, came in second behind South ern California's Julio Marin in 14:26.6. Marin's time was 14:24.9. Steen got off a heave of 61- 11 '4, the best effort of his ca reer, to nose out oary lur ner of New York University in the qualifying. Gubner went 61-9Vi- Reeve's finish was worth eight points and gave the de fending champion Ducks a to tal of 10 after four events and two days of the three-day com petition. The meet ends to night. Registration is scheduled Monday. July 8, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Cherry Lane Far course clubhouse. In cooperation with Cherry Lane Manager Andy Kumas, the city will offer a five-lesson course to both adults and chil dren in solf fundamentals to beginners. He's long past his peak and playing out the string with the New York Mets but Duke Sni der can still swing that home run bat with the best of em. And today the ex-Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodger hero has officially joined the great est homrr-hitlcrs in major league history. Duke became the ninth player in history to reach the 400-mark Friday night when he connected for a two-run homer in the first inning of the Mets' 10-3 triumph over the Cincinnati Reds. City's Summer Baseball Program Begins Monday City of Medford summer baseball program for boys gets under way on Monday with registration at the senior high school diamond. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. Clinic portion of the pro gram runs through June 28, Teams will be formed for the pee wee, intermediate and junior leagues In the South ern Oregon Junior baseball circuit. League play opens on June 24 and continues through Aug. 1. For the younger boys play ground teams will be organ ized for rivalry in sandblow er leagues. Boys will be split Into groups as of Tuesday. Y. -(UPD- Navy led almost all the way Satur day and knocked Washington from the unbeaten ranks in the three-mile junior varsity race of the Intercollegiate Rowing association regatta. The easy Navy victory du plicated the feat of the Middle freshman- crew, which also wrecked Washington's unde feated shell by a quarter length in the two-mile opener of this 61st annual national rowing championships on: On ondaga lake. California was third and favored Cornell was fourth in the junior varsity event. The revamped Navy junior varsity, stroked by Bill Fee- ney, took the lead at the hall- mile mark and pulled away with authority, widening the bulge to about lengths at the end Washington maintained Its No. 2 spot throughout and came home nearly' three lengths ahead of California and almost, five in front of Cornell. Clockings Slow The clockings of the 12 crews were comparatively slow because of a stiff north west headwind. MIT was fifth, followed by Wisconsin, Princeton, Rutgers, Dartmouth and Syracuse. Co lumbia and Pcnn brought up the rear, just as they did In the freshman test. In the freshman event, the underdog Plcbes caught pre viously undefeated Washing ton in the final 100 yards and earned a quarter-length vic tory. The Navy freshmen, win less until Saturday, thus de throned Cornell, the top choice to lake the two-mile race. Rutgers moved ahead of Cornell Into third place, row ing a strong freshman race. 17 From RVCC I In Junior Golf Rogue Valley Country club ill have a delegation of 17 boys and girls in the Oregon Golf association junior tourna ment which opens on Monday at Eugene Country club. The girls from here are Su san Boals and Louise Soran. The delegation is headed by Doug Olson, who won Ih boys' crown last year. Other boys slated to take pari are Colin Tubbs, Jim Sheldon, David Boals, Jim Wise, John Cailerllne, Tom and Kent Clark, Dennis Alex ander, Terry Scroggin, E d Mencke, Mont Kennedy, Carl Voegtly and Greg and Mike Miller.
