Syracuse, N. Y. -(UPD- Navy
led almost all the way Satur
day and knocked Washington
from the unbeaten ranks in
the three-mile junior varsity
race of the Intercollegiate
Rowing association regatta.
The easy Navy victory du
plicated the feat of the Middle
freshman- crew, which also
wrecked Washington's unde
feated shell by a quarter
length in the two-mile opener
of this 61st annual national
rowing championships on: On
ondaga lake. California was
third and favored Cornell was
fourth in the junior varsity
event.
The revamped Navy junior
varsity, stroked by Bill Fee-
ney, took the lead at the hall-
mile mark and pulled away
with authority, widening the
bulge to about lengths at
the end
Washington maintained Its
No. 2 spot throughout and
came home nearly' three
lengths ahead of California
and almost, five in front of
Cornell.
Clockings Slow
The clockings of the 12
crews were comparatively
slow because of a stiff north
west headwind.
MIT was fifth, followed by
Wisconsin, Princeton, Rutgers,
Dartmouth and Syracuse. Co
lumbia and Pcnn brought up
the rear, just as they did In
the freshman test.
In the freshman event, the
underdog Plcbes caught pre
viously undefeated Washing
ton in the final 100 yards and
earned a quarter-length vic
tory. The Navy freshmen, win
less until Saturday, thus de
throned Cornell, the top
choice to lake the two-mile
race.
Rutgers moved ahead of
Cornell Into third place, row
ing a strong freshman race.
