FRIDAY. JUNE 14. 1963 10 A Demonstration Day Set At Church of the Nazarene MEDFORO MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON : The Vacation Bible school held this past week at the Tirst Church of the Naiar ene. 520 North Holly St., will hold its Demonstration day Sunday at 9:45 a.m., during the Sunday school hour. - Lisle Young, Sunday school superintendent, will be In charge. The school this year was one week with sessions from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, Each day's activities were made up ot worship periods, with Bible study and story time, along with handcraft, book work and music. Mrs, Wayne Larson was the direc tor of the entire scnooi. Southern Baptist Events Announced Picnic Planned Sunday morning at the worship hour at First South' rn RaDtist church the pastor, the Rev. G. O. Skaar, will ' have for his message: "What ran I Do For Jesus?" The church choir, led by Dennis Sampcls, will sing at . both services. At the evening service, Mr. Skaar will have for his sermon topic: ."Keep ing The Church Doors Open." Mr. Skaar is acting as prin cipal at the Vacation Bible school being held at the church, 794 Lozier lane. He reports enrollment above the 140 mark. The school will continue next week, Monday through Friday, with hours from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The faculty of the school met at a local park for a pic nic lunch today and both pu pils and faculty will meet for a picnic at Union Park Fri day, June 21, at 11 a.m. as a conclusion of the school. Parents night and open house will be held at the church Thursday, June 20, at 7:30 p.m. A short program will be presented consisting of a demonstration of the daily worship assembly and a resume of the work done by each department. Hand work done by the children will be on display in the class rooms. Parents and friends are ln vlted to attend. A resume of the daily activ ities will be given in the dem onstration service. The Rev. Harold M. San- r.cr. pastor, continues his se ries of messages in the 11 a m and 7 p.m. services. At 11 a.m. his topic will be "What We Believe." Music as announced by Perry Christiansen will be presented by the sanctuary choir singing "Like a River Glorious" and a soprano solo by Jackon Phillips, during the morning service. Subject from Judgti In the 7 p.m. Sunday song and evangelism service the pastor will speak from the Book of Judges on the gen eral subject, "Stumbling Over the Stars" with his topic, "The Sword of Gideon." Music will be a duet by Velma Myers and George H. McUne, a solo by John Fink beiner, and an instrumental trio by Ruth Stiehl, Bob Han sen, and Harold Sanner Jr. The Oregon Pacific district holds its boys and girls camps the coming two weeks. Mr. Sanner is to serve as chap lain for the boy's camp. Youth will attend from the 79 churches of the Western Ore gon area. Boys camp Is June 17 to 22 and girls camp June 24-29. Activities Noted For Zion Lutheran "The Fathers of Today and Those Men and Women of Tomorrow" is the title of the sermon to be preached by the Rev. H. C. Coovert at the 9:30 a.m. worship service Sunday at Zlon Lutheran church, Fourth st. and Oakdale ave. Sunday school classes for children three to five years of age, and grades one through six are held during the summer months. The Sun day school starts at 9:30 a.m. Nursery care for Infants is provided during the Worship Hour. ' Dally Vacation Bible school will start Monday, June 17, at 9:30 a.m. The school will be held for one week through June 21, for children from three years of age throuuh 12 years ot age or sixth grade, Children from three to five years (nursery-beginners) will meet at 9:30 a.m. and be dis missed at noon. Children In grades one through six will meet at 9:30 a.m. and be dismissed at 2:30 p.m. They are to take a sack lunch each day for their noun meal. The last day all children will be dismissed at noon. A registration fee is charged. The annual congregational picnic will be held at the Elks Picnic grounds Friday, June 21, at 6 p.m. All members and friends of the church are Invited. Each family attend ing Is to take their own table service, fried chicken, and a salad or dessert. Coffee, ice cream and punch will be pro vided. Layman to Give Sermon Sunday At Unity Church Ray Bosworth will conduct the Sunday morning services at the Unity church, Holly and Haven sts., during the ab sence of the Rev. Katharine Bosworth, who is attending a ministers' conference at the Unity school of Christianity, Lee's Summit, Mo. Mr. Bosworth is a Truth student, and will give a les son from the layman's point of view. The subject of the lesson for the Sunday 11:15 a.m. service will be "The Father of All." The text Is taken from Ephesians 4:6. A tribute will be paid to all fathers. The children's choir, under the direction of Mrs. Thomas Lowe, will sing "Thanking God for You." Miss Sandra Myers will be at the organ. Mrs. Richard A. Schuchard will sing "Child of the King." The Men of Unity will meet Monday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. for a potluck dinner in the Unity church. The prayer ministry will meet Wednesday, June 19, at 11 a.m. at the church. Those ttending are asked to take their lunch. At 1 p.m. the study class will meet. The Wednesday night study class is cancelled. The Ashland and Grants Pass classes will meet as usual. The lesson for all study classes will be from the new book, "A More Wonderful You." B. Ross Evans, father of the pastor, will speak at both worship services Sunday morning at the First Christian church. Mr. Evans served the church as minister of evangelism in February and March of this year. He will fill the pulpit and take over the pastoral duties of his son, the Rev. Fredrick Evans, who Is vacationing for two weeks. The new church building for the First Christian THE REV. B. R. EVANS To Spaak in Son's Absence church is now in the finishing stages with the long awaited glass being installed. All of the various church meetings during the week are now be ing held in the educational wing of the new building and the offices are now in use. The only meetings which are still being held in the old church building are the Sun day morning worship services, church school, and the choir practices. ' The Chi Rho fellowship of the church will meet at 6 p.m. Sunday for a baseball game. Following their game, they will be led In worship by Ray mond North. The Middler fel lowship will meet at 6 p.m. for a planning meeting and for recreation with Sarah Mat thews in charge. The CYF youth group meets at 6:30 p.m. with Doug Hearrell as discussion leader and Cheryl Rice as worship leader. The CYF young people will leave Monday for a week of camp ing at the church's Little River Christian camp. Those CYF'ers who are leaving for camp will be recognized in the worship services of the church Sunday. This kind ergarten emphasizes a pre reading readiness program and is for five year olds who will be going into the first grade the following school year. Wil liam H. Lavely, former pastor of University Park Methodist church, Portland, will become the new pastor of Newman Methodist church in Grants Fax. Mr. Lavely will replace the Rev. Wesley Turner, who has served the local church for the past six years. A farewell reception was held last Sun day for Mr. Turner, who has been assigned to the Silverton Methodist church. Religious School Starts Second Week The second week of Relig ious Vacation school for Cath olic children not attending St. Mary's Grade school, will open at 8:45 a.m. Monday and continue daily through Fri day of next week. The classes, which are for students in grades one through eight, are dismissed each day at 11:45 a.m. Non- Catholic children are wel come to attend. In addition to regular cate chism study there is instruc tion in choir and mass-serving. The school Is sponsored and staffed by members of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine with the assistance of St. Mary's High school sodalists. Registrations are still open for those who may have missed the first week of the school. Space Age Subject For Methodists "Christianity in the Space Age" will be the subject of Dr. George Roseberry's ser mon Sunday, at First Method ist church. Robert Baccus will assist in the service. Mrs. J. C. Kaylor, Ashland, will sing "Great Peace Have Thee" by Rogers at both morning worship services. The youth choir will sing 'Praise the Lord! Ye Heav ens, Adore Him" by Pritchard at the 9:30 a.m. service and the chancel choir will sing 'Lovely Appear" by Gounod at the 11 a.m. service. Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m., the acolytes and their families will gather at Indian Springs camp for a picnic. This is a new group in the church and this afternoon is planned for them. The Junior High Method ist Youth Fellowship will meet at 6:30 p.m., Sunday. The devotions will be led by Janet Kent and Virginia Nel son. A council meeting will follow. Tuesday, June 18, the Junior High will play a soft ball game against the Junior High team fromFirst Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m. at the McLoughlin Junior High field. The Senior High Methodist Youth Fellowship will meet at the Methodist church at 6 p.m. to go to St. Mary's Cath olic church for a tour of that church by the Rev. Gilbert Lulay. From June 16 to 22, Penny Sage, Janice Larimer, and Kay Kent will attend the Oregon Conference Method 1st Youth Fellowship work shop at Camp Magruder. St. Luke's Church Notes Activities The congregation of St. Luke's Methodist church will meet at 9 a.m. Sunday to mark the observance of Father's day. The church is located at 2320 Siskiyou boul evard. The Rev. Charles R. Mc Donald, pastor, will preach on the theme: "The Function of Father." Ralph Humphrey, church organist will play three num bers by Stickles: "Adoration," Eventide," and "March in F." Beginning Monday the Con gregational church of Med ford will join with St. Luke's in sponsoring a Vacation Church . school at the St. Luke's church. Classes will be from kindergarten through juniors. The school will be staffed by teachers from both congregations. Mrs. Dale Williams is the superintendent of the school which will begin at 9 a m The school will continue through June 28. A Daily Vacation Bible school will begin June 17 and will be held in the education unit of the new church build ing at Crater Lake ave. and Stevens st. Sessions from 9 to 11:30 a.m. will be held for all children from pre - school through juniors. Mrs. Larry Adams is superintendent of this division of the school. Sessions for the junior high and high school youth will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Smith will be in charge of the junior high group and the Rev. Byron Evans of the high school group. Another feature ot the Bible school will be an adult division led by the pastor and will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m. It will be a study of the cults. The morning Bible school program will be from June 17 to 25; the junior high and high school program, June 17 to 28 and the adults, June 17 to 21. First Baptist church will be one of many cooperating groups in the forthcoming mass rally to be held at the Armory, June 28, at which time Dr. Glenn L. Archer of the Protestants and Other Americans United for Separa tion of Church and State, will speak on "The Current Chal lenge to Church-State Separation." High School Youth At Annual Camp Jacksonville -"Our Father" is the title of the first in a series of sermons to be given on the Lord s Prayer by the Rev. King K. Jones during the worship services of the First Presbyterian church, Jackson ville. During the 11 a.m. service the choir will sing "My Task. The Men s Study has been discontinued during the sum mer. During the week the Church School teachers will meet on Tuesday at 8 p. m. in the church. The high point of the church year occurs this week for Presbyterian High school young people of Southwest Oregon as they meet at Lake of the Woods for their annual Senior High conference. This conference begins with din ner Sunday and continues through Saturday morning. It is for students entering 10th, 11th and 12 grades as well as graduating seniors. The curriculum of the con ference combines recreation and study. Among the study courses to be offered are: 'What Do We Believe Christians?" What Is God Up to? "You and Your Voca tion" and "Sex in the Chris tian Life. Seminar courses will be offered for senior and graduating seniors: "T h e Meaning of Christ" and "Love and Marriage." Last year's conference was attended by more than 100 students. To Observe Father's Day The Rev. Robert W. Tull, minister of the Congregation al church, will preach a ser mon on Sunday entitled, "Things Learned at a Father's Knee," in observance of Father's day. The church s service of worship will be held in the auditorium of Hoover Grade school, on Siskiyou blvd., just east of South Modoc rd. at 10 a.m. Mrs. Raymond Powers 1 will play the organ music for the service, and Arthur Frie sen will be the soloist. During the worship' hour, the church school will be in session. Child care will be provided in the school health. room for children under three; the class for three, four or five year olds will meet in the school band room. First through fourth graders will attend the opening portion of the church service and then be dismissed to their class in the school cafeteria. Those in fifth grade and beyond are in vited to attend the entire service: Monday a Vacation Church school, being offered cooper atively by the Congregational church and St. Luke's Meth odist church will begin. The school will meet daily from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for two weeks. Classes will be offered for children from kindergarten age through sixth grade. The school will be held at St. Luke's church on Siskiyou blvd., with a registration fee being charged.' The Laymen's Fellowship will meet for breakfast at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Sambo's Restaurant on South Riverside ave. Mark Smith, will be in charge of the meeting. Saturday the men of the church will meet early in the morning to replace the roof of the building which is on the church s new property. A crew of men will begin work at 7 a.m. removing the old shingles. Another group will begin at 8 a.m. putting on new roofing. Will there ever be an end to death? These are the ques tions to be answered in a talk Sunday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses Sun- day at 4 p.m. The discourse : is entitled "Death, A Door way To What?" Following this will be study in the Watchtower magazine en titled "Using Theocratic As sets." The service meeting and j theocratic ministry school , will be held tonight at 7:30; o'clock. The men of the church will sing, "Faith of Our Fathers," and the pastor, the Rev. William Wash, will have as his sermon topic, "Christ ian Service." He will use as his text a portion of Isaiah 6:8. Beginning Monday and con tinuing through Friday, June 17 to 21, the church will have its Daily Vacation Bible, school. The time will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each day.
