6 C- Italian South LosesWorkers To The North Milan. Italy - OJPfl - Pros--nri v fit the "economic mir acle," as the unprecendented Italian post war boom ha v,.i.n termed, is causing many a headache to the nation! northern industrial cities. The problem which keeps city fathers burning the mid night bulb is a massive mi gration to the north. From the rising but still depressed south, thousands of workers take the road to the north every month. For a time Turin, with 11 automobile building boom, was the main target of south ern Immigrants. Milan, on the other hand, already was ac customed to a yearly Influx of 50.000 to 60,000 extra in habitants. Practically, this meant that a new city about the sire of Siena was added to Milan between every Jan uary and December. Plans for new housing, schools and hospitals were laid accordingly. But the flow of southerners attracted by the Milan industrial boom has suddenly Jumped by half as much again. Flock into City Now well over 100,000 per sons flock Into the city an-nually. All plans will have to be redrafted, and even so we city faces the prospect of not being able to provide shel ter and schooling for many of the new arrivals. The call for new Installa tions is so urgent that there no longer Is enough time to build with bricks and mortar the new schools required for the swelling population. Pre fabricated schools are now being rushed into the breach. Yet classrooms are always over-crowded. The problem of hospitals cannot be solved with the same system of prefabrlcatlon and this is the biggest head ache for the city authorities. Milan will need an estimated 9,000 extra hospital beds by 1985. Present construction plans contemplate less than lialf that number. Hospitals In Italy do not depend upon the township but upon the state and upon private welfare Institutions. One thing appears certain - Milan Is soing to be a much bigger city In a very short while. In size, she may wresi the laurels from Rom. Mrs.HcSieldHas Trouble Wifh Eyes Salem - (UPO - Mrs. Mark Hatfield will miss the Port land Hose Festival this year because of a recurrence of eye trouble, Travis Cross, the governor's preis secretary, said Wednesday. Mrs. Hatfield, who has previously suffered from a cornea breakdown, was treat ed in Los Angeles Tuesday morning before she and the governor returned to Oregon from a Southern California visit. Meanwhile, Mrs. Hatfield's father, Vince Kutmanlch, was treated at St. Vincent hospital in Portland for an eye injury suffered at work. Attendants said the Injury was not serious. THURSDAY. I 1 MORE BOWLING - More bowling fun looms for Dad in his gifts of his own bowling ball and a pair of Italian styled bowling shoes. Both by AMF. Spotlight on Sportswear For Father's Day Gifts The gift of sportswear to your Dad or Granddad this Father's day can accomplish a two fold purpose. First, it will provide him with comfortable and color ful garb in which to better enjoy his leisure hours. Next, it will give him an opportunity to indulge in his dream of being a deep-sea sailor, an Olympic skier, or a rough and ready cowpuncher. If this premise appears to be a bit remote, it should be explained that much of the sportswear for summer 1963 has been style keyed to a continuing enthusiasm for nautically designed garments as well as themes taken from the ski slopes and the rug' ged duds worn by actual cow boys. In some instances these fashion motifs are completely obvious, in others a lot more subtle. For instance, the new er nautical look depends less on embroidered anchors and such, leaning more to the constructions preferred by au thentic blue water salts. Ski-Look The ski-look that skyrock eted last winter due to the tremendously growing inter est in that sport, has been interpreted in beachwear and parka - hooded jackets slated for summer sunning. The long, lean, trim look of the real working eownand plus lighter-weight Interpre tations of his tough denims and chambrays have also been worked into the current style scene in both work-a-day ver sions and colorfully patterned rodeo types. -v A new color has been add ed to the sportswear and cas ualwear picture this summer, too. Called "banana," it is a soft yellow tone that does a lot to enhance those suntans that most Dads acquire dur ing their leisure hours. These banana shades have a lot going for them. Used separately, they are becom ing and easy to wear. They also blend well with most other colors that a fellow may have in his sportswear ward robe. Taken as a touch of colorful trim or decoration, the bananas have a faculty of pepping up otherwise drab garments. Sport Shirts All of the favorite models are again popular in sport shirts. Every style from the traditional button down col lar models to the contempo rary styles and Italian - types has its place in the vast array of ideas available to Father's Day shoppers. Is your Dad or Grandad an ardent golfer? If he is, he will probably appreciate the gift of several new knitted golf shirts. They may bear the name of his favorite pro. Or, how about golf socks es pecially designed for the an cient and honorable game? A lightweight poplin water proof golf jacket may be an other way to gladden his heart. In addition to the matched cabana sets, this is also a do-it-yourself season when it comes to swim wear. You now can put together your own choices in beach jackets and swim trunks. Does be have enough dressy slacks? Treat him to cool wrinkle - resistant trousers that beat the heat in style. - Prac- Summertime Styles May Solve Problem TRANSISTOR RADIO - tically any point on the glob Dad can bring in crystal-clear on his gift of a transistor ra dio for shortwave or standard reception. By G. E. Give your Dad or Granddad a lift with the gift of practical fashion this Fathers day. . There are few Dads who won't face the oncoming tor rid weather more comfortably and more presentably when garbed in gifts ?f clothing and furnishings. Gone are the days when a fellow had to suffer to be stylish. As a matter of fact, fashion and comfort are so closely related in contempo rary clothing that even the dressiest business clothes and formal wear are equally as easy to wear as sport clothes. Take the updated suits, for Instance. Fabric mills, with firms, have learned to blend man-made with natural fibers to create fabrics that are light in weight, yet with imoroved durability-fabrics that retain their press but also have the ability to shed unwanted wrinkles. Improved tailoring tech niques and manufacturing methods have also made pos sible the featherlight wash wear suits. The judicious use of findings, linings and the unseen trimming materials used in the making of these garments, make it possible to toss a modern washwear suit into a washing machine and then into a automatic the help of the huge chemical dryer and have it emerge pressed and ready to wear Of course, travelers and va-1 cationers who have no wash ing machines or dryers availa ble may wash the new wash wear suits by hand and hang them to dry with the same fine results. The same techniques plus some new fabric finishes make the same virtues possi ble in shirts and ties, too. The big fashion news in men's suits this summer, is the return to lighter colors. This long overdue development will brighten many a drab wardrobe and break up the monotonous all-dark look that has pervaded men's clothing for the past five years. The most popular of the new lighter shades is a clean, crisp silver gray. However, lighter tones of blue, blue gray, olive mixtures and both tans and browns are also in the trend. This docs not mean that just as most wardrobes were all dark up to now, that they will be all light. What is indi cated, however, is a rational return to a well diversified look - one which varies light colors with mediums and darks. The newer shirts for sum mer have several outstanding features, too. The first, and most obvious, is the strong return of both colored and PASSENGER MOVIES New York - lUPO - Begin ning May 1, Trans World Air line will show first-run mo tion pictures to all its pas sengers on trans Atlantic flights. The line has been showing films to passengers in its first-class sections for 18 months. striped shirts for business wear. This is a trend that has been growing for the last year or two and has now achieved acceptance by those fellows who let the fashion leaders set the pace. Socks, handkerchiefs, cool summer underwear or gift certificates for hats or shoes are another idea. . Lucchtringen, Germany 0IPI) - The 2,700 inhabitants of Luechtringen are making plans to erect a monument to an unknown U.S. pilot who they think died in saving their village from destruction in World War II. Hubert Fromme, a blind German war veteran, propos ed the construction of a me morial at a recent citizens' meeting. Stone mason Bern hard Stiefel immediately of fered to donate the monu ment and a local youth organ ization volunteered to prepare the ground. According to witnesses, a formation of Flying For tresses passed over Luechtrin gen one day in Maxell, 1945, heading for the industrial cen ter of Braunschweig, when a crippled bomber suddenly lost altitude and headed straight for the church tower of Lucchtringen. "The plane with Us full bomb load would have smash ed straight into our church and caused untold devasta tion," a 76-year-old villager recalled. "But suddenly the bomber was pulled up, bare ly passed over the church steeple and crashed outside the village in a forest." Most villagers are convinc ed the pilot died to save them, instead of bailing out. But farmer Adam Struck said he pulled the charred remains of the Flying For tress apart with his horses and removed the bombs, and found no indication anybody had died In the wreckage. August Dollc, another farmer who picked up two crew members of the plane who hud bailed out before the crash, said he never asked them whether anybody else had been aboard. District youth leader Ewald Heinemcir, a major support er of the monument idea, said: "Even if Struck didn't find the remains of the pilot in the wreckage, Im con vinced he was In the cockpit at the time - how else could the plane have jumped over the church tower? Nobody could recall the ex act day of the crash, but sev eral witnesses said It hap pened at exactly 4:30 p.m. They also remembered that U.S. troops had already taken nearby Uslar, but had not yet occupied the Weser Val ley. The villagers said they ' have asked U.S. Air Force of ficers and the U.S. Embassy in Germany to help in investigations. Power Tools DAD Will Really Appreciate . Work and Time Savers 3 Days Only!
