Cutting Extra Doors in House Office Building Would Be Costly By DICK WEST Washington -H.TO- Congress may spend as much as $200, 000 cutting extra doors throuah . th walls in t h e new. awu mil lion House. Of fice building. Apparen t 1 y, nobody no ticed that an a d d i tional rifln. lunula k. aSesJ needed In WMt each of the 169 suites until some sample rooms in the as yet unoccu pied building were put on dis play recent!;'. By that time it was too late to say "oops" and start over. The major portion of the building, a part of a $131.5 million House oti'ice expan sion program, had already been completed. I wv - consulted, he advised House officials that it would cost between $130,000 and $200, 000 to provide doors , where the blueprints called for built in metal filing cabinets. The House Office Build ing commission, perhaps wishing to avoid further criticism of the controver sial structure, than decided against going ahead with the portal project on a wholesale basis. However, in testimony re leased by a House appropria tions subcommittee, Capitol architect J, George Stewart indicated that the doors would be opened piecemeal for House members who request ed it. "If any member moves into the new building and wants a doorway cut through, I am sure every effort will be made When the contractor was i to accommodate his personal FIRST METHODIST CHURCH First end Wssner sts. Mrs Violet BolUger, mlnlater aunaeyi 0:45 a m. Sunday School 11:00 e.m. Morning Worship 6 p.m. Junior and Senior MY Church of Brethren ' Plans Bibh School The sermon topic of the Rev. William Wash at the Medford Church of the Breth ren Sunday at the 11 a.m. wor ship service will be "The Lord Will Perfect." The text will be taken from Psalm 138:8. The children's choir will sing, "Jesus Loves Even Me." The Men's Fellowship will have a work day at the par sonage Saturday. Sunday evening the Church of Brethren Youth Fellowship will meet at the Alvln Blr man home for their CBYF meeting instead of at the church. The Church is planning to conduct a Bible school from June 17-21 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Children from ages four through junior high are in vited. I II I I I 1 II 11 I I I I ib a i i I I I 1 1 J f wishes," Stewart told the sub committee. .. Subcommittee Chair man Tom Steed (D-Okla.) predict ed that "most of the members are going to insist they have additional communication fa cilities." If such is the case, then the total cost presumably would be somewhere in the neigh borhood of $200,000.. It seems unlikely that cutting the doors one at a time would be any cheaper than cutting them si multaneously. Each suite in the new build ing will have three rooms -one for the congressman, one for the staff and one in the middle, divided by a glass par tition, for a receptionist and the administrative assistant. .- There is a door between the congressman's office and the one to be used by his assistant, but there is not a door between the assist ant's office and the main staff room. Therefore, there is no way for the assistant to communi cate with the rest of the staff except by going through the reception room. The extra door would provide a direct link between the two. . It seems to me that the problem could be partly solv ed by having the congressman and his staff change places. That, however, would create another problem by cutting the congressman off from his assistant. - "It goes to show you that not all designers of office buildings are without fault," commented Rep. Walt Horan (R-Wash.). Offhand, I would say that is the understatement of the week. Servicemen Popes last Will . Lea ves Goods To Brothers. Sister Vatican City , HOT - p0pa John XXIII, in his last will and testament released Thurs. day, said he awaited "simply and happily the arrival of sis ter death" and asked that his final burial place be in the Basilica of St. John in Lat eran. "What little goods that with His (God's) help I managed to accumulate," the Pontiff wrote, should be given to his three surviving brothers and a sister. . "Born poor, but honored by humble people, I am particu larly' happy to die poor." 900 Words Long The last will and testament was started in 1925 and was last brought up to date on Sept. 12, 1961. It was about 900 words long. - The Pontiff asked that when the restoration of the Basilica of St. John in Lateran he had ordered was completed, his body be burled there along with other popes and saints who have it as their final rest ing place.' - St. John In Lateran, in a working section of Rome, is the mother church of Chris- ' tendom and is senior even to St. Peter's Basilica, where most popes are buried. Tradition says it dates back to the Emperor Constantine. It had always been the Pope's own church. . In the most recent part ot the testament he said, "I await and will welcome simply and happily the arrival of sister death in the circumstances that it pleases the Lord to send her to me." Special Blessing And, speaking about his worldly goods, he said that "to my beloved family ...
