Does your child have special needs which should be brought to the attention of the school? It Is possible the school will not be aware of situations ex lstlnj in the home which might affect the proper choice of teachers. A parent should Inform the school of any phy sical difficulties such as rhcu malic fever, visual defects, or hearing handicaps. Social problems with classmates are Important. Let the school know if father or mother is away from home for extended periods of time. Sometimes placement with a particular teacher presents a conflict. This could occur when a teacher is a social friend of the family. Many Factors Valuable There are many factors which are valuable to the school In making a placement decision. These should be In dicated either to the teacher, guidance counsellor, or prin cipal. The principal is In Hie best pocltlon to match chil dren's needs with a tencher best qualified to handle them. Another important decision la that of retention, promo tion, or acceleration. This should not be considered as a reward or punishment. Unfor tunately many people look at It In Just that way. Actually the purpose Is to serve the best Interests of the child Each case murt be weighed separately. There Is no rigid rule which holds true for (ill Individuals. A careful evalua tion by the teacher, school psychologist, principal, and parent is necessary. The school philosophy and pro gram must be Involved in these decisions. In most schools the policy Is flexible and based upon the Judgment of the professional staff. ' If your child. Is having dif-, flculty, find out why. This will often give a clue to the correct decision. . A physical difficulty should be brought to the attention of a physician. Psychological problems should also recelvo thorapy. Some times tutoring is needed in one or more academic areas. No decision will be fully helpful unless the cause of the problem Is treated. - Frustration Involved One of the most Important problems involved in promo tion is frustration. A child who Is placed In a grade' where the work is too diffi cult will be facing Impossible tasks. He may become dis couraged as he realizes that he has no chance for success. A. child In this situation may lose confidence. He may seek attention by becoming a be havior problem- or he may become shy and retiring. In any case the results are usu ally serious emotional and social problems. Obviously a child should be placed where he has the opportunity to be successful. The school wants to place the child properly. You can be helpful if you supply In formation that is applicable. Close cooperation between parents and school will be of major benefit to the child. al space here from a freezer, serving cart or more storage closets.
