(UPI) Young ornpefe for Title Seaside Seaside - Twenty-two tal-1 ented girls will compete for the 1063 Miss Oregon title in Seaside June 27, 28 and 29. This year, the Miss Oregon Tageant performances will be held in the new high school gymnasium which has air con ditioning and a larger seating capacity than the school used in previous years. To date, contestants have been selected from the com munities of Corvallis, Tigard, Gresham, La Grande, Malheur county, Yamhill county, Lin coln county, Salem, Spring field, Sweet Home, Tillamook county, Rogue Valley, Rose burg, Milwaukie, Eugene, As toria and Portland. Dr. Taylor Visits Campus a) Ashland Ashland - Dr. Floyd Taylor, president of the College of Guam and former member of the Southern Oregon college science-mathematics division, began his return trip to the Island Thursday, May 24, after visiting the campus. While in the states, Taylor visited a number of colleges and universities on a teacher recruiting tour which he de scribed as 'successful," hav ing signed up 12 of the 13 faculty members he needed. He also announced that Dr. Leon Mulling, head of the SOC speech and drama de partment, would serve on the Guam college staff during the coming summer session. Taylor reported that much progress was being made to ward rebuilding the college which was almost completely 'destroyed by a series of vio lent typhoons during the past winter. The effort will pay off for the winner when she is awarded the Miss Oregon crown with a 51,000 Pepsi-Cola Scholarship, a $1,000 mutation Mink stole awarded by the Oregon Mink Breeder's association, a set of matched luggage from Rich field Oil Corporation, the Toni Ban-Lon Fashion Award of $500 for her formal compe tition gown in the Miss Amer ica Pageant, an additional wardrobe valued at $1,200 made possible through Meier and Frank company of Port land, and the trip to Atlantic City in September to compete for the title of Miss America. Child, 4, Drowns; Sister Missing Stevenson, Wash. - I0PH One child drowned and another was missing and pre sumed drowned in the deep waters of Swift Reservoir northwest of here. Mitchell James, 4, drowned when an 18-foot cabin cruiser capsized. His sister, Theresa, 2, was missing. Skin divers resumed a search for her body today. The Skamania county sher iff's office said the boat, with seven persons aboard, tipped over about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The victims were the chil dren of Robert James, 22, and Mary Ann James. 21, who sur vived. Other survivors were Frances James, 42, Frederick Davis, 43, and Sharon Blank enship, 11. All were of Wood land, Wash. Sheriff's deputies said Hie two children were apparently trapped in the cabin of the boat. (UPI) Civil Defense Fund Study Under Way Washington - (UPll - A House armed services subcommittee today sought to find out exact ly what happened to the more than $1 billion appropriated for civil defense since 1951. Chairman F. Edward He bert (D-La.) asked Assistant Defense Secretary Steuart L. Pittman to prepare an ac counting of the money. He in dicated one thing he wanted to examine was the number of civil defense employees in the nation. The subcommittee is hear ing administration proposals for a vast nuclear fallout shel ter program. The plan would spend $175 million in the com ing fiscal year, and put more than $2 billion in federal aid in shelters over five years. At the opening session Tuesday, the House group heard four and a half hours of conflicting testimony on shelters, which civil defense officials called lifesavers and critics called death traps. Pittman claims millions of lives could be saved with proper fallout shelters in areas somewhat removed from prime targets. Mrs. Ida Bennlng, 88, was fatally injured in a two-vehicle collision on Slate High way 20 six miles east of Leba non. Her car collided with a pickup truck. She died at a Lebanon hospital.
