The carnival is set for June 22 and 23 Candidates must register by May 31 at the Ashland Chamber of Commerce office on the Plaza, the chairman Ceremony In Portland Weds Pair Elolse Elliot and Fred D. Miller were married In 2 o'clock afternoon rites May 18 In the Fremont Methodist church tn Portland. The Rev. Dallas McNeil performed the ceremony. The bride formerly lived in the Medford Plaza apart ments and was employed as a teller in the Equitable Sav ings and Loan office. The bridegroom, of Vancouver, Wash., la owner of a cleaning establishment in that city. Mrs. William A. Hatzl, Medford, daughter of the bride was matron of honor, and best man was Fred D. Miller Jr., Renton, Wash., son of the bridegroom. Seating the guests was Mr. Hatzl. James H. McBrlde, a son cf the bride, escorted her to Ihe altar. For her wedding the bride wore a streetlength beige chiffon gown with full tkirt and bodice trimmed vlih Insets of lace. She wore matching accessories, and car ried a white Bible with white orchids and stcphanotis. The matron of honor was dressed in I tangerine colored silk crepe sheath frock with matching accessories and a beige chiffon hat. She car ried a bouquet of brown cym bidlum orchids and ivy. Altar Dacoratad The altar was decorated with bouquets of pink snap dragons and white carnations. Traditional wedding music was played. The reception was held tn the Sheraton-Portland hotel. Mrs. W. Shannon, Yuba City, Calif., cut and served the wedding cake. Coffee was poured by Mrs. Victor Mel ton, Eugene, a sister of the bride, and In charge of the guest book was Mrs. Charles Randall, Los Altos, a daugh ter of tha bride. About 35 guests were at the wedding and reception. The couple has left for their wedding trip to Hawaii. They plan to return June 15 when they will live at 120 East Thirty-third street in Vancouver, Wash. For traveling the bride wore a blue suit with sliver mink trimming, and white ac cessories. The bride Is a member of Zulelma temple, Daughters of the Nile, Manzanlta chap ter. Order of the Eastern Star, and Rogue Valley Coun try club. The bridegroom is active In civic and business organizations in Vancouver, nd member of the Elks lodge and Rotary club. explained. Participants are to have water skiing ability but are not expected to quaiuy as experts. A queen and two princesses will be selected. The queen and her court will reign for the week end festivities in Ashland and at the carnival Sunday on Emigrant lake. The queen is to open the pro gram on water skis. Boating enthusiasts and visitors are expected from many areas in Oregon and northern California. Admis sion will be without charge and entertainment and re freshments will be varied. Ashland merchants are fur nishing prizes for the car nival. It is hoped to make the event an annual attraction. Miss Karen Wood and Miss Linda Weber, Ashland High school senior atudents, are early contestants In the queen contest, 1 Derby Couple Plans August Wedding Date Derby - The engagement and forthcoming marriage of Miss Arlcne Sybil Cothrin and Steven Gordon Dcen has been announced by Miss Coth rln's parents, Mr, and Mrs. Anion S. Cothrin, Box 140, Butte Falls highway, Eagle Point. The news was made known during a dinner party held in honor of the young couple at North's Chuck Wagon res taurant in Medford. Dinner guests were members of both families. The bridegroom-elect is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Dcen, Box 139, Butte Falls highway. Eagle Point. Miss Cothrin Is a graduate of Elk Grove Union High school. Elk Grove. Calif. She also Is a graduate of the Inter national Business Machine col lege, Sacramento, Calif. Her fiance was graduated graduated from Butte Falls High school and now is cm ployed at Cascade Wood Products company. White city. The wedding Is set for Au gust 23. Foimar Resident Visits In Ashland Ashland-Mrs. Andrew Mo Callen of Portland arrived Thursday evening to visit for a few days at Ihe home of Mrs. J. H. Hardy, 107 Granite street, and with other long time friends. She and her late husband were residents of Ashland, Loren Leach; and Larry Brown, Klamath Falls, Mr. McKay escorted his daughter to the altar and gave ner in marriage, Gown of Laca The bride's gown was de signed with Chantilly lace bo dice embroidered with pearls, and crystalline skirt with chapel train. A butterfly bow trimmed the skirt, and her bouffant elbow length veil was held by crystalline flow. era. Her diamond necklace was a gift from the bride groom. The bridal bouquet was of white roses, The attendants were gown ed in French blue crystalline frocks with net insertions and bell skirts, and they wore matching veils. The honor at tendant carried pink carna tions and the bridesmaids' bouquets were of white carna. tions, Baskets of white stock dec orated the altar and blue and white ribbons marked the pew ends. Miss Cheryl Ghelardi sang the wedding songs accoitv panied by Mrs. Norman Thames. Aunts Sarva The reception given by the bride's parents was in the Fellowship hall. Aunts of the bride, Mrs. Edwin Isler, Slock ton, Calif., Mrs. John Sum merficld and Mrs. John Mc- Quade, served the coffee and the wedding cake. Mrs. Rome Atkins poured punch and Miss Sharon Thompson had charge of the guest book. The reception room was decorated in blue and white and pink carnations centered the bride s table. The bride had designed her gown and veil and the atten dants' dresses and headpieces. For her daughter's wedding the bride's mother wore a peacock blue shantung dress with beige accessories and the bridegroom's mother was dressed in a rose flowered silk jacket dress with pink acces sories. Both had white orchid corsages. Travel South . The couple Is living on Beall lane, Medford, following their wedding trip to San Francisco and Carmel-by-the-Sea. The bride's travel attire was an apple green shantung dress with green and beige ac cessories. The bride attended Crater High school and has been em ployed as a beautician at the House of Beauty. The bride groom, who is employed by Elk Lumber company, attend ed Medford schools. Other out-of-town guests were Mr. Isler and daughter, Judy, Stockton; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stobba, Enumclaw, Wash., and Mr. and Mrs. War ren Flanagan, Olympia, Wash., aunts and uncles of the bridegroom; David Flana gan, Olympia, a cousin, and Mrs. trvln Schultz, Albany, Ore., an aunt of the bride groom. Mr. and Mrs. George Flana gan were hosts for the re hearsal dinner at their home. Pre-weddlng events for the bride were showers given by Mrs. West in her home on Military road, and a shower for which Miss Wanda Smith was hostess In the home of Mrs. Elmer Greer. Visitor Arrives From Australia A visitor at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Mans, field, 201 Crater Lake ave., is Miss Sandra Shepherd, Ky bybolitc, Australia, who is visiting this country for the first time. Her parents, Mr. nd Mrs, Algernon Shepherd, have a 9,000 acre farm in the district of Naracoorte, South Australia. Miss Shepherd accompanied Mrs. Helen John Smith, Costa Mesa, Calif., to Medford. Mrs. Smith, a former Medford resi dent, is a cousin of Mrs. Mansfield. The visitors plan to stay In the valley two weeks or so and then will continue on a trip to see some of America. They will visit in Washington state, Toronto, Canada, Wash ington, D.C., and New York City. Local Student n Concert Miss DeEtta L a w a o n, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Earl Lawson, 301 Windsor avenue, was one of seven stu dents at the University of Pacific, Stockton, Calif., fea tured in a program of voice and instrumental music. The student, a freshman at the college and a soprano, sang two compositions by De Luca and Verdi, accompanied by Miss Jane Holko, Hills borough, Calif. Their wedding was an event of May 4 at St. David's Catholic church In Richmond, Calif, at 10 o'clock in the morning. The Rev. John O'Halloran officiated at the ceremony and nuptial mass which followed. Blue and white carnations dccoraied the altar for the ceremony, attended by 7J relatives and friends. The bride is the former Jeanne Elizabeth Smith, Rich mond, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Smith, Fort Wayne, Ind. Mr. Dean, is the son of Mrs. A. Z. Dean, 200 Valley View drive, Medford, and the late Mr. Dean. He attended Medford High school and Oregon State uni versity where he was affil iated with Delta Upsilon fra ternity. Brida Wears Satin The bride wore an ice blue satin sheath frock with panel train. Her mantilla veil was of light blue silk lace and she carried a cascade bouquet of white lilies. O. L. Smith escorted his sister to the al tar. Mrs. Stanley Gabel was matron of honor and the oth er attendants were Miss Max- ine Solich and Mrs. Robert Taylor, Medford, sister of the bridegroom. They wore dresses of pastel shades of blue satin with light blue silk lace overblouses. Their headdresses were blue satin bands and they carried white carnations. Stanley Gabel served as best man. Seating the guests were Gordon E. Williams, Medford, brother-in-law of the bridegroom, and Harlan C. Bryant, Grams Pass. For the ceremony and buf fet luncheon which followed Mrs. Dean chose a gold col' ored suit with black silk ac cessories and white hat. Her corsage was of gold colored rosebuds. Luncheon Given A wedding luncheon was given by Mr, and Mrs. O. L Smith at the Don hotel in Richmond. The wedding cake was cut with a silver knife originally owned by Mrs. C E. Gates, Medford, maternal grandmother of the bride groom. Assisting with the serving were Mrs. Harlan C Bryant, Grants Pass, and Miss Gloria Dyke, Richmond. Mrs, Gordon E. Williams, Med ford, sister of the bridegroom, took charge of the guest book For traveling the bride chose a light blue wool suit with gray fox collar and black accessories. The bride attended Ft. Wayne, Ind., school. Mr. Dean is employed by United Engine Farts in Grants Pass, He formerly was with Trav eler's Insurance company. Among the out-to-town guests attending the wedding were Mrs. George E. Gates, aunt of the bridegroom; Miss Lynn Taylor and Scott Tay lor, cousins; Robert C. Receiving the guests with Mrs. Bebb were Miss Gail Voight, Miss Linda Beatty and Miss Jcani Woods. Compositions of the old masters were played includ ing Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Schubert, Saint-Saens, Mac Dowell, Strauss and Sibelius. Two trios, "Dear Land of Home" by Sibelius and "The Green Cathedral" by Hahn were sung by Miss Voight, Miss Beatty and Miss Woods. The finale was a vocal duet, "The Prayer Perfect," sung by Miss Voight and Miss Beatty. Mrs. J. Edwin Harper and Mrs. Milo Kubalek did the floral arrangements with flowers from their gardens.
