MEDFOhD, OREGON Bids Called for Road Construction Klamath Falls -"A bid In vitation for construction of approximately four-tenths of a mile of road In the vicinity of Lost Creek on the Kla math ranger district has been announced by Forest Super visor A. E. Smith. The proposed project will connect the Lost Creek timber sale road, which has been constructed through a timber harvesting program, with the existing Pelican Butte road. The short section of road will provide an important tie in the forest transportation system, Smith said, which was not possible through timber sale procedures. Interested bidders may pick up plans and specifications at the office of the forest super visor, 411 Main St., Klamath Falls, or from the office of the regional forester in Port land. Bid opening has been set for 2 pm. June 14. KILLED BY FISH Balllngham, England JDPD Police said witnesses testified George Nicholls, 66, was drag ged to his death in the River Wye Thursday by a 19-pound salmon. The fisherman was found dead in the stream still clutching his rod with the sal mon on the end of the line. Work is proceeding on wa ter system, flush comfort sta tions, and new table installa tions, and while contract crews are in the area it will be necessary to close all or portions of the camp to public use, he said. When the improvements are completed Apcn Point will be one of the most modern forest service campgrounds in Oregon, Twombly said. Other camp facilities at the lake, including Rainbow campground and the White Pine picnic area, will remain open, and the Aspen Point area will be reopened as soon as construction is completed, Twombly said. Applications for Aquatic Course To Be in on Week End Offilcals of the Jackson county chapter of the Amer ican Red Cross have remind ed young people interested in the Youth Aquatic Course that applications must be turn ed in by this week end. Young adults 15 years of age and over who are inter ested in increasing their aquatic skills are eligible for the program, which will be conducted at Southern Ore gon college and Emigrant lake from June 9 through June 15. The course will be limited to only 40 students; however, there are now almost 100 hun dred applications in circula tion, oficials said. Candidates will be screened as to their swimming ability, with the earliest applicants receiving preference in the final selec tion. Prospective students may bring their completed applica tions to the Y when they go for testing. The cost of the program vill be $40 per student. A reg istration fee of $20 will be charged to cover the student's share of room, board books and transportation in Ashland with the balance to bo paid by the student's home Red Cross chapter or other spon soring group. Purpose of School Purpose of the school is to train young people in basic boating, canoeing, sailing, lifesaving, water safety and first aid. Students can earn Red Cross certification in these fields, thereby begin ning their training to qualify themselves to serve in camps, playgrounds, pools and other summer activities of the com munity. Successful completion of the courses provides a founda tion for students to go for ward to instructor status after reaching 18 years of age, of ficials noted. Because water can be a good friend or a deadly en emy, the community will benefit by having its young people trained by specialists, the Red Cross noted. Additional information re garding the program may be obtained by telephoning the Red Cross office at 772-4405. Driver Escapes Injury in Accident A Medford driver narrowly missed injury last night when speed control sign went through the right side of the windshield and into the front scat. State police said Geraldine Lehy, 38, of route 4, box 377, Medford, was travelling north on Kings highway when the car went off the road and Into a ditch. It knocked over sev eral mail boxes near Gar field st. before the sign went through the windshield, offi cers said. A flatbed truck was dam abed beyond repair from a sideswipe accident on the In terstate 5 freeway near the Gold Hill interchange yester day, state police said. The flatbed truck driver, Robert Arthur Crowe, 19, of Newport, said he was looking in the side rear-view mirror watching a passing vehicle when it drifted over to the shoulder and caught the left rear corner of a parked semi trailer truck. (UPI) Legal Notice Rate Increase Approved Salem - (UPD - The Senate Thursday approved a rate in crease for newspaper legal notice advertising. It was the first time in 12 years the rates for publishing official notices had been in creased. Newspapers having more than 40,000 circulation were raised from 3 to 4 cents per column inch per insertion for each 1.000 of circulation. Smaller newspapers were granted an increase from 13 to IS cents per column line of 8-point type for the first in sertion, and from 8 to 10 cents for each subsequent insertion. Everyone has been busy working on their projects of sewing and knitting. The meeting was adjourned by President Dixie Schafcr. Dona Schafer, Reporter Clovar Club The Clover Sewing, Cook ing and Child Care 4-H club met recently at the home of Mrs. Glenn Lowe, the leader. There were six members pres ent. The Phase II girls made muffins using recipes in the 411 club books. Games were played while they were cook ing.
