MEDFORD Everest Climbers Heading for Top of Highest Mountain Katmandu, Nepal - (UPD - Two teams of American moun tain climbers struck out to wards the top of Mt. Everest, the world's highest peak, from the south and west sides today in hopes of meeting at the summit. An official spokesman for the expedition said there was "high hopes for everybody." But, he said, there was no confirmation that anyone actually had reached the peak when last word was radioed to Katmandu from the base camp today. Good News Hoped Earlier, expedition spokes man Daniel Doody had ra dioed from the base camp on the slopes of Everest that chances of a team reaching the summit by the previously unexplored west ridge route today were "very slim." But he said "we hope for good news" from a team at tempting the better - known south col, route.
