Princess Sophie and her husband, Don Juan Carlos, are shown in Madrid. (UPI) Children Who Steal Necessitate Firm Action bv Parents BY DAVID NYDICK UPI Education Specialist Parents and teachers often are faced with the proDiom of children who steal. How should it be handled? The answer depends in part on the child's age. Children below the age of three who take items which do not be long to them ordinarily do not understand what ownership means. Their experiences with toys, etc. lead them to believe that everything is shared. Don't get upset when a child of this age takes someone else's property. You should ex plain that the item is not theirs and should be returned Perhaps you can bring out the difference between shar ing and ownership. It is im portant that you realize that the child will probably not be able to develop a full under standing. In the three to five year age group children should be de veloping increased respect for their own as well as other's properly. During this period, they will become more Inde pendent of you. As they learn to get along with their friends, a need to respect other peo ple's property will grow. Additional guidance should be used when incidents of steal ing occur. i Above the age of six. chil- drcn should have sufficient ! knowledge to recognize that they are doing wrong when they steal. In this age group children tend to steal secret ly and hide the objects. They will probably deny the act. When this happens, you must be particularly firm. Explain that you love the child but do not approve of this behavior and will not permit It. There are a great variety of reasons why children might steal. Children who are deprived may resort to steal ing if the need becomes strong ' enough. Of course, stealing is : by no means limited to the needy. Children who appear to have everything are just as guilty of this objectionable behavior. When children arc lonesome or unhappy, they may turn to stealing. Some times the cause is a lack of a warm relationship with par ents. Don't Humiliatt Child The basis for such actions may be analyzed. An individ ual might be trying to gain attention or attempting to get even for treatment he feels is unfair. Regardless of the reason stealing is not accept able. The child should not be humiliated. A great deal of care should be taken to make sure that he has stolen some thing before he is accused. If the stealing continues as the child grows older, finding the cause then becomes quite Important. Persistent behav ior of this nature Indicates a need for psychological assist ance from a guidance center or other qualified professional. I I - I CHECK J THE SAVE ITEMS 1 V 1 at HUBBARD BROS.
