Meet Every Two Years The committee decided the legislature should continue to meet every two years. The House-passed version had made annual meetings op tional. The committee reversed Its action of last week and re stored new broader language on protection of an accused person against double Jeop ardy. It tentatively defeated a move to change the effective date of the document from Jan. 1, 1967, to July 1, 1966, but the Votes of two absent committee members could pass the motion. Jackson county Veterans' service offi cer, nan reminded all veter ans of Pennsylvania residing here that an amendment in the Korean bonus law pajscd in September, 1961, made ap proximately 30,000 additional slate veterans eligible for bonus payments. The amendment removes the Korean Service Medal re quirements and specifics the "career servicemen" may be awarded the bonus provided they can prove that they were legal residents of Pennsyl vania Jan. 1, IBM. The amendment also specifics that "career servicemen" may not collect a total of more than $500 from World War H and the Korean bonus. Country Project To Open Remote Lower Deschutes River In Sherman County Presented To Resources Committee Salcm-dlPU-A $365,000 proj ect to open up a 20-mile sec tion of the lower Deschutes river in Sherman county was presented Tuesday to a joint meeting of the Senate and House Natural Resources com mittees. Russell E. Getty, state di rector of the Bureau of Land Management, said the project would be financed with fed eral funds if the money be came available. The plan was prepared by a special state federal inter agency study group. The blaze, of undetermined origin, destroyed 20 class rooms of a building construct ed in 1939 and one new addi tion. One new wing was saved. The three alarm blaze broke out about 2:30 a.m. and fire men remained at the scene until after daybreak mopping up. Classes for the students were canceled temporarily. Getty explained the pro posed road would dead-end at Mack Canyon to preserve the wilderness character of the river downstream from that point.
